I’ve been toying with the idea of introducing speed limits. Max number of lines of code you can produce in a week. More LOC != better features faster

dax@thdxr.com

everyone's talking about their teams like they were at the peak of efficiency and bottlenecked by ability to produce code here's what things actually look like - your org rarely has good ideas. ideas being expensive to implement was actually helping 1/4

How do you think we get to good, wide spread AI etiquette? Is it even possible? I feel like it only takes a small minority “playing the numbers game” to ruin it for the rest of us

Josh W. Comeau@joshwcomeau.com

I’m hopeful that most people will figure it out pretty quick, when they see that nobody is reacting well to their messages. And hopefully we start establishing some norms around AI etiquette.

🙋‍♂️me! I really don’t see the appeal in “spec driven development”. I love the feeling of hand typing 1000 LoC and having it work first try. I love the feeling of fighting the linter or type checker or borrow checker to get that def just right. I love landing on an elegant api design. I like coding

“AI optimism requires you to see yourself and your loved ones as safe from AI; as the passengers in the self-driving car, and not as the pedestrians it might run over.” Please read this. And send it your AI optimist friends and family.

I have a lot of thoughts on AI. I've been working on this post for a couple of months now. It's very personal, characteristically lengthy, and sure to be at least somewhat controversial. Take it (or don't) as you will. joshcollinsworth.com/blog/sloptim...

Every bad use of AI: getting AI to do something you *can* do but *don’t want* to Vibe coding, cheating in school, the fucking neo robot Every good use of AI: getting AI to help you do something you *want* to do but *can’t* Curing diseases, predicting weather, learning new skills

In an interview this week, when the candidate couldn’t answer any of my questions they said “I don’t know syntax, I use AI to do all that.” When I pressed him on that he assured me he always gets a second AI to check the first’s work. I wish I had this thread to give him in that exact moment

Josh W. Comeau@joshwcomeau.com

Here’s a question I get a lot: > “Now that AI can generate front-end UIs for us, what’s the point of learning CSS ourselves?” I think there are lots of reasons, including that you can use AI much more effectively if you understand CSS yourself. But is that actually true? Let’s discuss. 🧵

A lot of folks know me for one or two posts, and might not know I've created nine (9!) visual explanations of computer science topics, aimed at practitioners. If you're looking for things to read this Thanksgiving, I think you'll love them. Computer science is a lot of fun, when explained well. ❤️

We need to stop saying JavaScript was originally designed in 10 days. Todays JavaScript is basically unrecognizable from the first version in 95. Thats ignoring the 30yrs of work gone into it. Its a living language constantly evolving. Why do you think you have to keep updating your goddamn packages

14. money only matters until it doesn't only focus on making more money until it stops being a constant source of stress (e.g. grocery store math, scrambling to make bills). beyond that, money only matters as far as it helps you live a life you enjoy. dying on a giant pile of cash sounds miserable

This take is needlessly inflammatory. Yes misinformation from LLMs is a problem, but misinformation has always been a problem. ChatGPT is different in magnitude but not different kind. We’ll get through it with media literacy and research skills not by outright rejecting the technology

Hoping to release it in a couple of weeks, but first I have to spend many many hours on easter eggs that most people won’t find 😂

Boss made a dollar, Grandad made a dime. But that was a poem From a simpler time. Boss made a thousand, Gave my Dad a cent. But that coin paid the mortgage, Or at least it paid the rent. Now bosses make a billion, And give us workers jack. Then smugly blame society, For the labor that they lack.

Web dev friends: What was your "aha!" moment in web dev? What revelation or scenario made you a senior? What made you find out "how the sausage is made" that fundamentally changed your view on web development? (Please boost for reach 🙏)

Tech is: - a very small world, always be kind😊 - full of opportunity, open every door🚪 - cyclical, please be patient⏳ - challenging, collaborate and learn in public🤓 - rewarding & fulfilling, don’t burnout😌🧘🏽‍♂️ - dumpster fires followed by HTTP 200s ✅ - for everyone, regardless of where you came from🫂

This is so perfect cuz the parks in that city skyline are from when you actually went out and touched grass

What’s better to hire for senior web dev? 10 years in systems programming but long time since web specific exp Or Only 5 years in web dev, but up on the latest framework churn, standards, and spec

Open this photo up and look for the small, white dot just left of centre. It looks like Venus, shining brightly in the twilight sky. But it's us. It's Earth. From Mars.

I feel like half of programming is remembering how weird stuff works and the other half is setting things up so that you do not have to remember the weird stuff

Love to see Dan quoting my most common zoom message at work

hmm. i don’t understand why this is possible — this release should have the fix. i’ll need to look at this again.

Ok, let’s see if I’ve got actual people following me 😬 #buildinpublic I’m making a multiplayer react library to give you Figma style apps in like 3 lines of code. One function call on the server, a provider, a hook and BAM you’ve got multiplayer

View full thread

It’ll also include a useSharedState() hook kind of like a zustand store with selectors and granular updates, but across multiple web browsers or “clients”

It’s my first open source library and I’d love some feedback. I’m not ready to share it yet, but let me know if you’re interested. If you can think of how you’d use this or if you have any wishes for api or features etc, let me know!

Basic websockets just send strings. Getting shared state and client state synced across devices from simple messages sent and received is non trivial. I found myself rewriting bespoke solutions for every feature.

Anybody else stay up till 3 rewriting your whole side project, just to lie awake in bed till 4 thinking about how you’ll rewrite all again tomorrow? No? Just me? Ok

You are up to date.
