Social justice attorney. City kid who prefers the woods. Views = mine; nothing here = legal advice. Teaching and writing on legal ethics in hopes they aren't oxymorons...
Digging into @jacobweisberg.bsky.social engrossing new book before he comes to speak on campus, and this caught my breath:
"That's how democracy dies: not by waving a white flag in a final battle with dictatorship, but through a thousand respectable, reasonable retreats."
How does democracy fail? Not because people wake up one day and decide they prefer authoritarianism. It fails when the people with the power to resist decide the price of resistance is too high. Don’t be one of them. Read my book, out today. penguinrandomhouse.com/books/818503/p…
Just finished teaching my legal research and writing course. It's such a high to see their growth, appreciation, and enthusiasm. I really believe every bit of heart and effort I put in paid off and made the term more rewarding for me and for them. Now it's time to bring that to my scholarship!
“No kings is a great slogan, but it should apply to the people who control our communications infrastructure as well.” This is good and worth reading. www.techdirt.com/2026/10/20/a...

A victory…no one came to the @cornelluniversity.bsky.social alumni party here in New Orleans. We saw the organizer walk away and she left all the CU tchotchkes behind. Cornell should expect continued disengagement from alumni until there’s greater accountability. #IAmJaneDoe
It’s perfect! I’m going to the big annual Cornell alumni drinking party that every Cornell club has the second Thursday of each October that all the most involved alums go to. I’ve never been, but I’m gonna finally make an appearance this year.
HEY, EVERYONE!
Follow Scott Colom, & don’t sleep on this race
Yes, I’m fully aware it’s Mississippi
I also said months ago Dems have a good chance of winning Kansas & South Carolina would be a race
He’s a terrific candidate. Hyde-Smith is horrible. There’s a giant Black vote in MS. And it’s 2026
Cindy Hyde-Smith is bought and paid for by an AI and data center Super PAC...
....and she also sits on the Senate Committee that has primary jurisdiction over AI policy and development. The corruption is clear as day. It's time to go in a new direction, y’all.
She’s here! We just welcomed our beautiful baby girl and words can’t describe how blessed my family feels. Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I’m beyond grateful.
Thank you, everyone, for your love and support. It means the world 💕💕
It's disgraceful enough of Donald Trump to skip the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, but to go golfing in Ireland instead—just to promote one of his properties—shows Trump's contempt not just for this solemn anniversary, but also for decency itself.
Five C-17s delivered King Donald the Mad’s Secret Service motorcade to Ireland: Cadillac SUVs, anti-drone systems, assault vehicles and emergency equipment – all for a 2-day trip including the Irish Open at his own Doonbeg golf resort.
And US taxpayers pick up the bill for his private event.
This is spectacular, folks. We live in a moment in American history when the president and his administration are so racist and dumb that a toy company has to put out a statement saying: "OUR GIANT ROBOT THAT TURNS INTO A TRUCK DENOUNCES RACISM AND HAS NO CONNECTION TO THE CURRENT PRESIDENT."
Even if you aren’t aware of any such agreements missing from the State Department’s site, you can still help out by RT’ing this piece…or share it in relevant Reddit subs, email listservs, etc.

We’re suing to bring transparency back to Trump’s State Department—and you can help!
Are you aware of an international agreement that the U.S. may have concluded since Jan. 2025? Have you been unable to locate it on the State Department’s site? Let us know 👇 ⬇️

Wise words: "focus not on what we need to preserve but on what we need to change and what we need to create: a democratic system that is more representative and more responsive to the American people — not just those at the top, but more importantly, those in the middle and those at the bottom.”
Happy Labor Day. As @jenrubin.bsky.social writes at @contrariannews.org, a key phase in the movement to not just reclaim but reimagine our democracy goes into high gear starting now: www.contrariannews.org/p/labor-day-...
I might be in denial that fall is arriving, but these beautiful #leaves on today's hike in #Harriman know what's up. Hope you get out and enjoy the transition.
A January 6 rioters who filmed himself drinking Fireball in Nancy Pelosi's office visited another government office this week: Todd Blanche's. It sure doesn't sound like the payout fund for insurrectionists is dead.
Yes. Once you start seeing this (Institution X probably wanted do this conservative thing anyway but now can blame it on Trump), it's everywhere. It's not capitulation, it's agreement. "We can stop doing this thing we started doing from 2014-2020 because of woke/progressive/anti-racist pressure."
We don't think we're asking for much when we say that Justice Department lawyers should demonstrate a familiarity with basic legal terms and/or the English language
My husband Drew wrote this at breakneck speed while moving cross-country and caring for an 8 month old, bc he felt it was necessary, ethically and politically, to correct the record. If you read Tyler Austin Harper's piece, I hope you'll read this.
Andrew Baker was also a “token black professor” at Bates College. But his perspective on the events Tyler Austin Harper recounts in his Atlantic cover story is very different. Read Baker’s side of the story online today.

Baby's first paintings! I never "got" painting, especially #watercolor in grade school. Since then, brushes have been for painting apartments or egg washing baked goods. With a lesson and some YouTubes, I've found it a fun and interesting challenge that I hope to continue. #Beginner#BotanicalArt
May your morning be as satisfying as this commuter's. Looks like he's living his best life with an e-bike, beating the subway without breaking a sweat.

I hadn't clocked, in the deluge of departures from federal service, that "The heads of all seven sections of the Chicago [US Attorney's] office’s criminal division have left in the past year, as have many of their successors and deputies." www.nytimes.com/2026/07/19/u...
Luttig: As a candidate for attorney general of the United States of America, Blanche is an embarrassment to America itself. If the Republican Senate confirms this man, based on his record, to be the next attorney general, it will mark the end of the rule of law in America.
Statement from Annie Farmer on meeting with Todd Blanche:
"After meeting with Todd Blanche, I feel even more confident in urging senators to vote against his confirmation as the United States' Attorney General.
"I found him abrasive, condescending, and intentionally noncommittal to survivors."
🙏 @dblight.bsky.social:
"When lies by smiling propagandists become official truths advanced by those who control government budgets, democratic culture dies.
It is time, before it is too late, for Congress and the people to ... Defend the Smithsonian or lose it."

As I listen to the president invoke the vulnerability of American elections, I think of the Republican head of the Colorado County Clerks Assoc. who says a standardized national system would be far more vulnerable to hacks than the decentralized system today that is locally and state-driven.
A protest group called The Secret Handshake placed a giant gold “Iran war participation trophy” for President Trump on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
I didn’t engage in the Platner discourse much because it seemed like enough people were fighting about it but, as a guy who worked in politics, like, yeah—ixnay on the azinay attostay
Hi #LawSky#LawProfs,
Do new job announcements go on here? Or just that other platform? Maybe with emojis? 🤷♀️
🎤 Well, sharing mine : I'm THRILLED today to continue on at Columbia Law School, now full-time for the next two years as the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Academic Fellow.
#Onward
🤓⚖️🗽My research agenda will focus on the legal profession and the rule of law, along with professional responsibility in social justice advocacy.
I'm grateful to join the community of academics pursuing more just and equal law & would love to hear about opportunities to collaborate on these topics.

My family is from a COUNTY with no stoplights.
The whole town could easily fit on the green behind this reporter.
BUT every scorching hot tractor pull, every stultifying antique car display, every church pancake breakfast, fish fry dinner, and communal burgoo stew cookout had MANY more attendees.
TL;DR Gemini is an agent of sexism. Its suggested edits to Jennifer Horsburgh's resume depended on if it read she was "Jennifer" or "Jeff"... in exactly the ways you'd expect.
Well worth reading its (validating! undefensive!) responses that... won't fix a thing...

SOOOOOO close! We are > 72 hours away from the Advocacy Institute's party. I have only a few hundred dollars left to achieving my personal fundraising goal and would be VERY grateful if you are able to make a gift to this excellent nonprofit. Donations will be QUADRUPLED so you'll make a big impact!

Pretty remarkable to me that as a 24-year-old law student, Sonia Sotomayor made The Washington Post for reporting a law firm partner to Yale after he asked her racist questions during a recruiting dinner ballsandstrikes.substack.com/p/clarence-t...
