According to MIT News, Margaret Hamilton died at the age of 90. "A profoundly influential computer scientist best known for leading the software engineering team at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab during NASA’s Apollo program". This famous photo 🔽 inspired the For All Mankind character Margo Madison.

ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton. she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back. news.mit.edu/2026/margare...

I found several parasites in the same specimen last night and tried to take pictures with my phone. One actually turned out pretty good. There's a number line in the eyepiece of the microscope. Right at the number 6 is a nice circular object.

So if you see more than four nuclei, and the size is right, you've got E. Coli. You usually can't see all the nuclei in a single field, though. You have to move the focus up and down a tiny bit to catch them all.

It has a specific size range, but it cN overlap with some other species of amoeba. What let's me identify this one are the smaller circles inside it. Those are nuclei. E. Coli cysts can have up to eight. Similar amoeba only have up to four.

Most parasitic amoeba have a cyst form that has a nice round shape. This one's named Entamoeba coli. The E. Coli most people know about is a bacterium, not an amoeba, but this is also called E. Coli for short.

This is truly heartbreaking. Dolly Parton was an extraordinary person and an irreplaceable champion of the working class. We are a better country because of her.

DO IT Seriously. DO IT. Trump and Vought are actively and viciously trying to turn US science into what it was in 1950s USSR. DO IT

One of the biggest misconceptions about Ebola is that it is primarily a hemorrhagic disease. It isn't. In the current Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the DRC, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea dominate at presentation, while bleeding occurs in only ~10% of patients. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Goooooood evening and happy Sunday! The out of pocket cost of the birth of my son, after “good” insurance, after meeting my deductible (despite a wicked pregnancy, everyone was healthy) was OVER TEN THOUSAND US DOLLARS. And then I went back to work still bleeding. So I don’t think it’s the phones.

When you see the story about how the world now has its first trillionaire, and when you see the story about how laboratories in Congo have run out of supplies to test for Ebola, it is important to understand that in many ways these are the same story.
