why are all these articles looking at every other issue in society while ignoring the reason why ppl ain't having lots of kids: ppl can't afford to live, let alone have offspring .-.

i mean, i made the decision long before i knew i couldn't have them, that the world is already going to burn in my lifetime, let alone subjecting a child to that ecosystem collapse. i don't think i'm unique in that viewpoint in the slightest.

FFS NPR. 1) a lot of the birth rate drop is due to teen moms not being forced to be moms any more. This is a good thing! 2) financial considerations probably explain the rest, since giving birth alone is like $15,000, roughly 1/3 the median annual salary in the US.

How much giving birth will actually cost is unknown, since we have the world's crappiest medical system if you just look at cost per outcome. Uncertainty might be even worse than knowing for sure it'll be $15K, because it might be $100K for "out of network" stuff

Wow another right wing framed story. It’s because sex education works and teen pregnancy is down. Women are still having kids but later It’s also because the oligarchs you deep throat hoard all the money I really hope to see you fail in my lifetime but suck will probably float you as oppo control

Yes. Hello. The only people concerned about the birth rate are white nationalists, as there is no such thing as "too few" or "too many" people. What *they* mean is the white race is in danger, which they care about deeply because they're fucking nazis

See, a big part of the elon musk 14 words horseshit is that the breeding war is supposed to already be underway, and white people are just supposed to have so many uneducated babies they can't afford, because we're about to have just *so* many war casualties. Why aren't ya'll fuckin already?!

People aren't having kids because no one can afford to and the world is dying because of pedophile rich white men. Its not that hard to understand.

we're all broke. jesus christ, are you all stupid? we don't get paid enough, and everything is too expensive. not gonna have a kid and then make it starve.

Exactly. I grew up in a single parent household and food insecurity was a frequent thing. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and I definitely wouldn't want to bring a child into that situation.

you could say that about the stagnant national wage because the federal standard wage last increased nearly two decades ago and you'd be closer to causation, too

internet/schools, in a sense my school for example has sex education... I have no idea about the schools my parents went to, but they didn't have me and my sister unplanned :P also it depends, some schools still don't have good or any sex education

Or, and just throwing this out there, it might have to do with the entire world falling apart, the burning forests, the lack of breathable air and clean water, all the wars, the gun violence, and that none of us can afford to live while billionaires hoard all the resources. But sure, phones...

How hard is it to admit that no one has money for jack shit anymore and kids are expensive as hell due to no governmental support? This isn't rocket science. It's money, it's that simple.

Hey there Did you know that ice cream causes shark attacks, because there is usually an uptick of shark attacks at the same time that there is an uptick of ice cream consumption. I'm sure there are 0 confounding variables in this statement I have just made.

My phone makes annoying noises until I pick it up, so it's a near-equivalent. The decisive criterion for buying a phone was that I didn't need to buy a bigger house for my phone.

This is why we haven’t taken steps to be foster parents. In the U.S., unless you make a family business out of having 4 foster kids, the programs don’t provide enough aid to offset the housing when you’re not already housing your own kids too. After surviving foster care, I would never do 3+

The iPhone didn't just change how we communicate; it might have fundamentally altered our biological trajectory. A new study links the smartphone era to a sharp decline in birth rates. Are Smartphones Causing a Baby Bust?

The claim is that smartphones have fundamentally changed adolescent behavior, reducing in-person social interaction and potentially serving as a substitute for relationships. Stated Judgement: (0.0, 0.0) — Neutral Observation

The reality is a systemic shift where digital convenience and entertainment are actively displacing the biological and social foundations of family formation. Resulting Judgement: (-0.5, -1.0) — Lesser Evil

Smartphones make it easier to casually see what's happening in the world, even when bored on the subway. Users look at life and think, "This is NOT a world I want to bring children into... not that I could afford kids, anyway." Users commit to living child-free.

Side note, it doesn't help that the oligarchs have made it increasingly difficult to get good care during pregnancy - which is still challenging and risky in the 21st century - let alone good support if things go sideways.

Folks aren't eager to sign up for being forced to carry a corpse to term and risk sepsis and more, themselves, because no one will remove a dead fetus anymore.

Maybe your next article will outline how infant mortality rates are typically higher in red states because Republican voters spend more time on their cell phones.

Have you read this? Because it's a better explanation than your ridiculous article: bsky.app/profile/sail...

We have no money. You know this. Why do you keep asking why we’re not doing things we used to do? It’s because we have no money. We. Have. No. Money. We have no money. There is no money left. It’s all gone. None of us have it. No money. Nope. Money gone. We don’t have it. No.

I would expect you to understand the difference between causation and correlation. It's just because we're broke and the world keeps getting more fucked up. I guess you are pretty close to the mark in that the smartphone is a symbol of the actual problem...

Yeah I was listening to this yesterday and this might be your most out-of-touch work yet The GDP is not an accurate reflection of economic conditions for the average American. You might know that if you talked to the average American. I’d love kids, my phone is not the reason I don’t have kids.

It’s definitely not because women can have their own bank accounts and careers now. Nor the fact that it’s entirely unaffordable to sustain life these days. Nor the thought of adding more people to a dying planet. Definitely the phones.

News at eleven: Economists are actually morons practicing a pseudoscience. Real science gives a much better picture, ask a climate scientist why millennials and younger aren’t having children. Hint: who wants to curse someone with that bleak future!?

In 2008 millions of people lost their homes, millions more lost their job. Since then, our economic outlook hasn't bounced back. Credit card debt, inflation, food costs & homelessness skyrocketed when Biden was in office. But yeah, it's the smart phones. Do you people listen to how stupid you sound?

This garbage is indicative of why we ended our sustaining membership during Trump Season 1. People are poor. The world is in shambles. Our government is actively trying to kill us. And you have the gall to suggest smartphones are to blame? Just... no words for how far you've fallen.

Gosh I wonder if anything else has shifted in the past 20 years. We're all rooting for you, NPR, and you continue to not meet the moment. Fucking embarrassing.

Look, I know everyone is going to blame affordability but people in countries with excellent social programs are also choosing to have way fewer kids and I think the thing is, there are a million reasons. But smartphones? nawwwwwwwwww

Hear me out on this: maybe, just maybe it’s because many women like myself are becoming childfree because they know they’d have to do the brunt of the work AND everything is unaffordable nowadays.

Have they had a study about why people had so many kids in the past- even if they didn’t even like kids? Have they done that one yet? My grandmother was raised in a family of 10 where half were girls and their mom thought girls were worthless. She married young and had 10 then left…

My dad was raised by a single dad who adored them but worked night and day to provide. There are three of us. His siblings- one or none. If someone doesn’t want children or cannot provide for them, why have them? Maybe this generations isn’t selfish- maybe they are wiser and more discerning?

this is possibly the stupidest thing I've seen... Like guys, THIS ISN'T TWITTER! you know what REALLY happened since then? Kids smartened up and realized they shouldn't marry someone they secretly hate, and have kids when they don't have the money/budget, iphone has no correlation

@npr do better, this is some boomer click bait. It’s about being disenfranchised with end stage capitalism- the impending climate crisis, and the indifference and cruelty of the haves vs the have nots. You live a too comfortable six figure life, You don’t understand the working poor.

Hey Boomer! It’s because ALL THE $$ is now with a handful of lonely old narcissistic guys and our terrible f*n medical care system charges us house mortgage rates just to get ignored! Stop blaming dumb shit for us not adding another soul into this misery while simultaneously increasing our debt

If you want us to have babies, we need a financial incentive too do so. Forget a tax break, give us money to take care of them for 18 years and then some so we don’t have to worry. We sure can’t afford a baby when we can’t even feed ourselves.

People freaking out about birth rates are freaking out specifically about WHITE birth rates. "Oh no! White people will be a Minority!" OH? IS THAT A BAD THING? ARE MINORITIES TREATED POORLY?

I heard this story (on Wait Wait) and it's good research. The side question is: do we need to have more babies? Do we really need /more/ humans on this tiny blue dot? Some generations of negative population growth is probably a good idea.

Smartphones have Defo made people do VERY Silly things... But their phone making them not want to have kids is not it... xD Stuffs Expensive, Lots of people don't get paid all that much, and The world is kinda garbo at the moment. I think THAT, is why people don't wanna bring a kid into the world.

Young people will tell you it's being kept in poverty, and not knowing whether their potential children would survive climate change... But what do they know, right?

Did you happen to take a look at the wages of average workers versus the price of literally everything including the cost of raisin kids, rent, food, healthcare, and education over those two decades? There might be something to explore there instead.

This is the most Boomer take I’ve ever heard. If Smartphones are having any effect on Birth Rates, it’s because people are checking their bank accounts and saying “Oh crap, i can’t afford to have a child now!”

Definitely the phones and not the crippling student debt, terrible job market and insufficient affordable housing. Nope. Gotta be the smart phones. Only explanation.
