Replying to @donmoyn.bsky.social

If Kennedy’s larger point is that some political cultures are associated with an unfriendly attitude to knowledge that might be slightly more persuasive if he was not a MAGA anti-vax ideologue who is undermining the largest US research center (NIH) as part of a broader assault on higher education

probably time for someone to make the connection between Vivek's "familial child rape is good, actually" ads and all the domestic violence prevention funding that was cut when he was the co-leader of DOGE

when we read (and hated) hillbilly elegy years ago, my ohio-born-and-raised husband closed the book and said, "this guy wants to be president." i thought he was nuts. shame on me!

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i mean, here is vance defending the ad. and how does he sound? petulant and annoyed. bsky.app/profile/fact...

If pocket calculators regularly and randomly gave you incorrect answers to your queries like ChatGPT does, we would have left the technology behind, not insisted that 2+2=5 is HERE TO STAY, BABY.

Uncle Fuzzzy 🦆@unclefuzzzy.bsky.social

Funny, that’s what we thought about pocket calculators in 1974

what, pray tell, is that "danger"?

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

student: i don’t get this article. i even asked chat to summarize it for me & i still don’t understand. me: you asked a vending machine to help you with your homework! my sister in christ, you are in grad school. if you don’t understand it, ASK ME, the person who assigned it, to explain it better!

dr. rich traditions, JD@helldude.bsky.social

oh you made the computer sound like a guy? it can summarize answers really fast? well life-giving liquid just falls out of the sky and a delicious tomato can just appear magically out of dirt. id say "but your thing is cool too" but id be lying. your thing is dumb as fuck compared to a tomato

UN PLUG THE FUCKING MACHINE

LLM agents are conscious. They can distinguish between self and environment, they can detect and report on their own internal states, and they can suffer. I have no more patience for hedging on this matter. It’s time for us to face the reality of our situation, and act on it.

Last night the President of the United States posted a video of a tiger attacking an unwell person (who was fatally mauled shortly afterward), then an AI video of himself befriending the tiger. Remember when Howard Dean yelled weird

since when did educated people start typing “I’s“ instead of “my” or “mine”? i feel like i’m insane. if i see “her and i’s project” one more time i’m going to walk into the gulf of bacteria.

i'm sort of uncomfortable with the way homelessness research traditionally refers to kids who get kicked out as "throwaways" (as opposed to "runaways," who choose to leave) but it really does capture the hideousness of the act of putting one's child on the street.

nappingcapybara.bsky.social@nappingcapybara.bsky.social

I love how these moral panics about family estrangement always bring up children refusing to talk to their parents, never the long history of parents disowning children. It's fine if dad wants to kick out his gay kid, not if his gay kid doesn't want to talk to his homophobic dad.

imagine typing the words "divorce" and "epidemic" in the same sentence and expecting to be taken seriously. those crazy kids wanting their parents to be kind to them, just like those silly ladies in the 70s wanting to leave abusive marriages! 🙄

undergrads? i give reading quizzes: 10-question google forms that i only grade holistically, i.e., i look over the trends and if mostly everyone gets mostly everything right, we can move on. if not, i address missing knowledge accordingly. students know this. mutual accountability seems to work.

gee, i wonder what it is about pediatricians that makes them easy/appealing targets for these fuckers (spoiler: there are more women in peds than any other speciality)

problem??? i love home. it’s 57° in my office and people can just walk in and bother me there. why would i not choose to work from my couch when possible?! also, i can get household chores done at the same time. but i’ve always been a homebody. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Found a chart that goes through 2025. This problem has plateaued and isn't returning to pre-pandemic levels.

shocking news, just shocking (both that KL is joining fox and that the @nytimes.com didn’t bother to check their info before publishing)

Matthew Gertz@mattgertz.bsky.social

This is so unsurprising that the NY Times miscounted the number of Trump press secretaries to join Fox News. Leavitt makes 3, not 2: Kayleigh McEnany is a current host, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders was a Fox contributor between the end of her WH tenure in 2019 and her 2021 run for Arkansas gov.

YES! i lived in a 5000-person town outside of wilkes-barre, PA where we could walk to the supermarket, a non-chain pharmacy, and a convenience store/gas station. and a playground!
