Anything can be broken down until its contribution is deemed irrelevant; it's a dangerous & familiar tactic for dismissing the need for change by sectors, nations & at city levels. The Jackdaw decision sets a precedent that will be used in planning, etc. to justify yet more hi-carbon developments.

After Burnham's 'pragmatic' decision, how sure can we be that the foreign gas we are said now not to have to import will not be used elsewhere, just the same, reducing the incentive of whoever buys it to switch to renewables? A good response from Prof Kevin Anderson bsky.app/profile/kevi...

We are in a climate emergency & yet the government just approved Jackdaw. As Green MPs, we've tabled an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to keep fossil fuels in the ground (including Rosebank) and to focus on things that would actually lower bills & create secure jobs.

Senior scientists are quite often uncomfortable communicating results that might make them look "radical" or "alarmist" in my experience. Due to all sorts of reasons.

This area in front of Gare du Nord in Paris used to be full of cars and totally chaotic, but they recently limited the street to pedestrians and cyclists and it has made a huge difference. This is what cities that care about people do.

And to think Carney was Johnson climate finance guru - just after he stepped down from the lucrative role as Governor of the Bank of England. Typically the ‘great & good’ are part of the climate problem not the solution.

Net zero 2050 is a political anchor increasingly distant from the science aligned with our UNFCCC, Paris &ICJ commitments. Simple Q. As we face a cumulative emission challenge & global emissions are still rising, how can we still have the same end date. Each year we fail so the date moves closer.

My comment was specifically aimed at those on “high incomes … accompanied by prestige, status and glittering honours”. My experience is that early-career researchers (ECRs), and many others, typically remain more committed to integrity and to careful, considered interpretations of their work.

Christian Zauner@chrizau.bsky.social

Or for young scientists who haven‘t made their name yet and are (subconsciously) cautious because the duration between bleak projections and the proof that it wasn‘t exaggerated - might be tough and career hindering until then? Or - if research budgets are still negotiated and you endanger many.

Perhaps, but I also think we hugely underestimate the allure of prestige and high income. I suspect we all like to think we're immune to such temptations, but in our quieter, more reflective moments, I think we're aware of our own more ephemeral foibles.

Christian Zauner@chrizau.bsky.social

Apropos „Wissenschaft“. @kevinclimate.bsky.social hat da einen Punkt, oder? Nur wieso kann das bei den „Peers“ durchgehen? Ist das eigentliche Thema Angst vor der Zukunft und sich der Angst nicht stellen wollen?

Thanks for you ongoing moral clarity! To add to your point, I think we need to stop letting people call the more delusional proposals like planetary scale CDR or solar geoengineering techno-optimism. A more accurate term is techno-salvationism because these claims are more ideology than science.
