*HUGE WIN FOR DADS!* *(AND FOR MUMS TOO!)* Self-employed dads now have paternity leave from day one in the UK. The Labour Government is introducing paid paternity leave for self-employed parents for the first time in British history.

Of course the campaign to get more than two weeks paternity leave continues. We need to push up the amount of paternity leave in the UK, for dads yes, and their kids obviously, but also for mothers who benefit at home and if they work at work too, both of these in the short and long term

(As I’ve been moaning to friends elsewhere this evening that if your theory-of-change carps and moans loudly when you win a big part but not all of what you want, you are not helping yourself with your longterm goal, so I’d better remind myself to stick to my values on this too & celebrate this win)

These changes will also support adoptive parents, people who’ve recently started a new job, and parents who’ve recently lost theirs. If you work full time, that’s worth up to £194 extra a week - money in your pocket right when you need it most.

We’ve been awarded the MoD Employer Recognition Scheme Gold 🏅 We’re proud to be a workplace where veterans, military families and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers are valued and supported, and where colleagues build a supportive environment for current and former members of the Armed Forces.

Spookily for me I first met Andy at a similar push for people to get the flu jab, back when I was a practicing nurse at @uclh.bsky.social and he was Secretary of State Our chief nurse then thought I didn’t give quite the right impression for publicity shots due to my tattoos. How the world turns 😆

Arguably not the most important issue today, but is this the first British prime minister with a tattoo?

Headlines of labour market stats reinforce resilience of UK economy this year: - employment rate ⬆️ by 0.2% to 75.3% - amongst the highest on record - unemployment rate down⬇️ 0.1% - inactivity ⬇️ 0.1% in the latest quarter (and a full 1% since 2024 election)

Sadly not much shocks me anymore about the far right, but this is sickening. The quotes from the Reform councillors about people who aren’t white or muslim are abhorrent. And I’m sure this man would still call himself a ‘patriot.’

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Another Reform councillor in South London called for the King to be decapitated for being a secret Muslim. Reform say they are taking disciplinary action against a small number of councillors who do not share their values. I believe both would be welcome in Restore www.itv.com/news/2026-10...

New IMF forecasts tell you 2 things about UK economy. Firstly, the British economy has proved resilient in face of the Iran conflict: IMF have UK growth as joint second fastest in G7 this year (forget forecasts, in hard data we’ve seen the fastest growth in G7 so far this year)

Second, something way too often missed by commentators: the UK is doing more than anyone else in G7 to strengthen our public finances. We are delivering the fastest fiscal consolidation in the G7 and forecast to have the smallest deficit in 2031

Soldier, ex-racer from Sittingbourne dog track, now retired and putting up with the Parliamentary lifestyle, discovers a potential local campaign. Why is it cats get graffiti at Sittingbourne skate-park & not greyhounds? I’ve offered to give him some coaching in community campaigning 101 techniques

And last night, nine weeks after he joined us in his Sittingbourne retirement villa, he finally reached that point in doggie confidence where for the first time he jumped on the bed, then blocked us from our normal sleeping positions, hoping to banish us to the floor Nice try Soldier, nice try.

I think this is often driven by media class overcompensation for fear of metropolitan bias: a lack of proper engagement across geography, social class lines leads to a weird caricature of public opinion, as if the radicalised online group must be speaking up for authentic public opinion

It was odd to discover how many liberal-left, centrist, conservative right opinion formers did not know how broad the consensus on this question was when the 'can Sunak be English' debate began **18 months** ago already!

Not only a fringe view currently being aggressively promoted for desperate reasons, it’s not even an interesting talking point as most pub conversations settled this decades ago. Less than 16% support for the (nonsensical in the case of Englishness) race essentialist view. Boring as well as nasty

‘Now we turn to the controversy that is what is it to be English?’ Nick Robinson says on radio 4 today before talking about Badenoch and Braverman Couldn’t turn the dial quick enough

The Pinkas memorial in Prague is truly sobering. Every name on the wall is one of the over 77,000 Czech Jews killed in the Holocaust. The names pass through multiple rooms and go up the stairs. Each name written alongside their family was someone with hopes, dreams, hobbies & loved ones. #neveragain

I guess it counts as a quirky historical irony that the Isle of Sheppey, the Isle of Sheep, is now one of the palest parts of the UK on this map. Or maybe the Saxons had a prototypical British sense of humour?

For years, we've rightly focused on the military and political threat posed by Putin's Russia. But there's another cost that receives far less attention. A hidden cost paid by British taxpayers, businesses and public services. It's called the Putin Tax. 🧵

Saw this at the Proms when they first premiered it 12 years ago, so been waiting a long time to hear it again It was a very intense, powerful & fun piece in that version, so very keen to hear how they’ve developed it further Plenty of lessons for today from Turing himself and what was done to him

The Tories’ position on pensions is falling apart. A Shadow Cabinet member wants to replace the State Pension as we know it with something that offers 'dramatically less'. Only Labour will protect a rising state pension while building a new National Care Service. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Sarah’s reaction isn’t surprising. We all know the criteria she uses & that Reform’s constant two-tier refrain reveals rather more about how they see the world than how our police & courts do This incident should have been a much bigger wake-up call to all of us. Instead it was too often downplayed

A man builds an IED. He sets it off in a busy public street. Shrapnel flies about hitting cars, homes and a child's bedroom. It's a miracle nobody is injured. And Reform MP Sarah Pochin calls his imprisonment "disproportionate" and "two tier justice."
