🧵 There's a very unfortunate tendency of some very loyal Democrats to misapply "Murc's Law." For those who don't know of it, Murc's Law is the concept that the mainstream media acts as if only Democrats have agency in politics, and that Republican can't choose to act more rightfully.

The other reason why popularism is the Democratic Way is that most American left elites are actually libertarians or moderate conservatives. They don't want large welfare spending, restrictions on police misconduct, high taxes on corporate robber barons, or free healthcare and college....

the democrats have plenty of money. hundreds of millions. its not just waiting on tom steyer. its a disinterest in playing the game AT ALL.

alexmarks.bsky.social@alexmarks.bsky.social

For Democrats to invest on this level they need some billionaires to help, instead of Tom Steyer deciding he wants to play Governor.

This simply isn't a rational argument. Despite a contentious primary, El-Sayed has consistently led Rogers in *real* polls. He's underperformed Benson, but it's likely that any Dem would have (it's a Senate seat). Peters himself narrowly won in 2020!

Senator who made millions from his family’s coal business while using his power to kill climate policies that threatened the coal industry flies in to support a Senator who allegedly gave millions in contracts to a defense contractor in exchange for illegal campaign donations

He remind me of Lieberman and the damage he did after Gore picked him. Rs somehow know better than to elect someone who blocks Rs agenda. Ds won KY. May win 5 more red states in a few weeks. We never really needed Manchin, we just never tried anybody else who would vote for the Dem agenda.

When JD Vance says Abdul El-Sayed should express "gratitude" for what America has given him, Vance is really saying he's lower on the American hierarchy than "heritage Americans" are. I asked El-Sayed to respond to this point. Here's his answer: newrepublic.com/article/2169...

will try to answer these in a piece next week but for now i will say that part of the *point* of court expansion, in my mind, is to create a disequilibrium — a potential race to the bottom — that will force a truce.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

Both the mainstream media and the gop (and dem leadership) bought into this notion that Trumps squeaker of a win over Harris was this giant sweeping mandate for conservatism and Trumpism. It never was. He won against a Democratic Party that has spent multiple decades hobbling itself. That’s it.

One thing we discuss is the idea that our institutions, by caving to Trump, helped persuade him of his own invincibility. But now he's shocked to be discovering that some people and institutions and countries won't surrender to him. Our exchange on this point: newrepublic.com/article/2165...

a big reason (though not the only one) that so many elite institutions capitulated to Trump immediately in early 2025 is they had learned through long experience that Dems are too chickenshit to punish them for basically any reason. but things can change!

republicans wrote us off long ago. you dont see republicans trying to win over clinton/obama/biden/kerry voters. and its more of an uphill climb for them. if dems spent 1/3 as much time cultivating their base as they do kissing the feet of republicans hoping theyll change, the party wouldnt lose

Precisely this. Democrats should write off the 77 million people who were fine voting for Trump, 70 million of them who may have done so three times, and instead focus on motivating the 100 million people who don't vote.

a big part of ossoff's rhetorical success is it doesnt contain the compromise and caveats that are a baked-in part of democratic party rhetoric. theres no pretending that his opponent is just misguided or will be pulled back from the edge by "the good republicans." ossoff is saying "fuck this guy"

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

My MAGA focus group felt betrayed by tariffs, high gas prices, and inflation. I asked if there was any way Republicans could win back their support, and they replied only if they could prove that the pain had fallen harder on Black people.

Democrats caved and/or facilitated this monopolization of practically every major media property in the US into the hands of a MAGA fascist psychopath. If the US had an opposition party, each of its presidential contenders would would vow to dissolve this monopoly by any means necessary.

Democrats still refer to “MAGA Republicans” when discussing policies all Republicans support or actively enable. All this does is suggest that there are “normal” Republicans (like Lawler or Collins). It’s bad messaging but the Dem consultants won’t give it up.

A blockbuster Susan Collins scandal, GOP panic as the midterm map shifts, a Trump-loving Republican scrubs Trump from his site, Trump threatens to “annihilate” Iran at the UN, a GOP senator calls for an investigation into Don Jr., Trump TV flops, and AOC talks 2028. And that’s just the start.

I wonder if @owillis.bsky.social shares my cynicism here, but I do think that Trump is almost intentionally pushing Democrats past a point where they could get away with gaining power for its own sake and simply "containing" his worst actions. This isn't the border wall.

I think it needs saying that beyond the obvious intention to hurt Americans with this decision is the fact that this is a terrible decision to make right before a midterm election. Is there anyone in the White House asking are you insane wtf? www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

One post-election narrative is already pre-baked: Voters turned out *against Trump* not *for Dems*—ergo Dems' post-2024 reckoning must continue. The first part will be true. The second part doesn't follow AT ALL. What should follow is *doing what voters signaled they want* so that they are grateful.

offmessage.netSwing Voters Won’t Be Grateful If Democrats CapitulateIndependents aren’t abandoning Republicans because Republicans refuse to pass message bills, but because they’ve given Trump carte blanche. We’ll know whether Democrats understand this by December.
