To writing you must turn your mind. See for yourself, it saves one from work. The farmer's back is bent from labor, the washerman has a crocodile for a neighbor, but the scribe's only threat is the whims of corrupt officials.

The thing about a Hollywood production is that it's inherently going to value personality and performance over dusty timelines of emails and scientific fact. And with Holmes that's like agreeing upfront that the man vs octopus wrestling match HAS to be in an underwater cave.

It's frequently pointed out that the difference between Holmes and someone like the WeWork guy is that medical tech is a heavily regulated field, but Holmes was convicted on defrauding investors and acquitted on scamming the patients that medical regulations supposedly protect.

James Ball@jamesrball.com

She also didn't succeed at fraud! All sorts of white collar dubious behaviour goes completely unpunished. The WeWork founder is still an extremely rich, free man. You have to fail pretty spectacularly to have Holmes' privilege and end up in jail.

It’s so funny how Elon is constantly responding to this kind of sick shit with “yes” or “that’s correct” but never actually composes any reprehensible opinions of his own, even about how low T men can’t think for themselves

The most susceptible to this stuff are the people who basically had their politics determined what they read on Twitter, people without any underlying principles.

Well, fuck. While I'm sure his life has been hell for the past two years, Trump had no way to force him out. This feels like a case study in how elite institutional actors have shrunk from the responsibilities of their offices.

Probably not a coincidence that the field seeing the clearest benefits so far from AI (mathematics) is one where the research the AI is doing has a clear separation from the act of writing the article and a strong norm to keep papers short.

Dan Silverman@dmsilverman.bsky.social

I‘m far from an AI doomer, but it is amazing how many serious voices — on LinkedIn, no less! — are sharing stories about how AI slop is quickly becoming one of the top problems they see in academic writing and research “AI will 10x our research!” doesn’t seem to be surviving encounters with reality

I'm a biological determinist. Boomer lead poisoning leads to erratic voting behavior while microplastics in zoomer brains suppresses voting activity. Millennial cellphone radiation actually suppressed hitler particles and leads to enlightenment.

"This is wrong because, if cost wasn't a constraint, I would prefer the more expensive product" -All of Bluesky, somehow missing the point in the same way.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

Frankly, whether you want to moralize it as a personal failing ("prefering cheap crap over quality") or financial necessity is beside the point, and both can be true depending on circumstance. It's just a fact of how consumers make decisions.

Unfortunately, this is an example of Trump thinking and speaking like the median voter.

As long as we're bribing famously corrupt international sports federations, I don't think FIDE would charge too much to rig the next candidates forum for Nakamura.

It was probably a relief for POTUS that someone outside of Russia and the Gulf states responded to a briefcase full of money in the manner Trump expects when he offers a personal bribe.

A lot of replies being like “Wait something good!?” No you morons, republicans want to be able to allow chud truck drivers to speed through your neighborhood without consequence. You are a fucking sucker if you think congressional republicans care about privacy. This stupid country I swear to god.

NEW: In the morning, lawmakers plan to introduce an amendment to a $580 billion transportation bill that would make federal highway funds contingent on states and cities killing off their automated license plate reader programs, i.e., Flock, in most cases.

This isn't about legality or decency or suddenly growing a spine. The Attorney General has promised that Republican Senators will be eligible to claim from the pot of money, and they don't want to split it with cop-punching riff-raff.

Whatever her other faults, Clinton spent her entire political career scheming to find ways to get as close to universal health coverage as possible and took repeated political defeats while trying. Then based on a vague reputation for centrism, people go, "Pfft. Didn't even try."

Kheti The Scribe reposted

Any “deal” that ends with Dems just getting a pinky promise in return is a mistake. The American people are suffering because Republicans refuse to stop healthcare costs from skyrocketing. An agreement that doesn’t fix that reality falls massively short.
