The things that the last general election campaign ignored (or that the news media ignored) are the things that are defining this current government.

Some of the big elephants in the room from Ireland's general election campaign: - Covid - Climate - Palestine - The Triple Lock - AirBnB - United Ireland The three main parties were not pressed on these issues, as far as I could see. #GE24

That Great Britain and the United States denied entry to hundreds of European Jews fleeing Nazi Europe in the 1930s and 1940s is an indelible and notorious stain on their moral record. Visa denial during an ongoing genocide is no less evidently racist and no less unconscionable.

I can’t stress enough how deliberately insulting this statement is & how irredeemably toxic it will be to his relationship with solicitors. Arguing over money is one thing. This is, politically pointlessly, another thing entirely. Poisoning the well of discussion to play the big man for a headline

Jim O’Callaghan will tell the Oireachtas Justice Committee that cases of alleged rape are being “deliberately” targeted by the solicitors’ dispute over legal aid. Such cases, before yesterday, could have resulted in a defendant representing themselves and then cross-examining their own complainant.

Mild conspiracy theory: I’m convinced that there’s more and more smoking on film & TV these days. I reckon the tobacco companies have realised rules aren’t being enforced, so they’re back to doing sneaky product placement.

The aim of this comms strategy is to create this narrative: 👐 Look at all the things we're doing about school attendance! 👐 Rather than: ⚠️ School attendance figures continue to be terrible, despite all the Action Plans and Ad Money we've thrown at the issue. ⚠️

How to bury bad news, Tusla style: On 24/9/26 Tusla hosted a School Attendance Summit in Croke Park, with 300 attendees, including the Minister. It published a couple of reports at this summit, none of which were the 2024/25 School Attendance Report, which should have been published months ago.

One week later, with no fanfare - or statement from the minister - Tusla quietly published the 2024/25 school attendance report, the Thursday before Budget Day. It received practically zero news media coverage, even though it shows continued high levels of absence, mainly due to illness.

Tusla has published multiple reports & studies about school attendance recently - including an ERSI publication on the 17th September - and they have always been featured in the news. Tusla has also spent >€1m on media adverts, so why was the release of the 2024/25 school attendance data so quiet?

A newly published wastewater report shows the extent of the Covid wave currently hitting Ireland. Ringsend in Dublin has seen a near-vertical rise in Covid levels, with its peak likely to exceed last year's wave.

Tusla has published its school attendance report for the 2024/25 school year, and attendance still hasn't recovered compared to pre-pandemic levels. Illness is by far the biggest cause of absence, accounting for 52% of explained absences in primary schools, and 57% in post-primary.

We're in a proper Covid wave here in Ireland at the moment with a significant number of hospitalisations each week. Flu cases are ramping up too. For all the recent news coverage of the flu vaccine shortages, there has been very little public acknowledgement of this Covid wave.

Just a bit of tampering, no big deal.

The recent subsidy to fuel costs over €1billion. One of the arguments Eamonn Ryan used against making public transport free was that if they did that, people would use it too much. Meanwhile a recent survey found Dublin the most traffic congested EU capital city.

Mark Sugrue 🇪🇺@marksugrue.com

Looked it up: Apparently Dublin Bus earns around €400m from fares per year. DART passengers spend about €80m on tickets. So ~€500m would make public transport free in the capital.

None of these things are unconnected, unfortunately.
