I grew up hearing every funny Black comic and notable Black political voice condemn "Whitey" in one way or another; and to me it was always PERFECTLY clear that this described "white authorities" and/or "dumb trashy white racists" - since I wasn't either of those things, I laughed too 🤷‍♂️👍

This is why I hate the “it has to be subtle!!!” Critique of queer media. The fact that we can’t just say what we are or what the character is is so reductive and constraining to so many queer writers. Don’t let cis people dictate how you show you identity. They don’t know what they’re saying.

When trans creators are subtle, people dismiss the trans subtext as “headcanon.” When trans creators are loud and proud, people call it “obnoxious” and “cringe.” They just don’t want us to be represented in media at all. Because they don’t want us to exist at all.

I just found out about Walter Koenig, weird that Star Trek TOS was already on my mind. I know he was brought on to ST to 'appeal to kids,' and for me, it worked, he was my favorite character on the show for a long time. Very sad news.

Walter Koenig's Pavel Chekov was one of Gene Roddenberry's biggest swings with the original series. For season 2, he put a Russian on the bridge of the Enterprise, on prime time network television, just 5 short years after the Cuban Missile Crisis and during the height of the Cold War. 🥺
