playing a game of civ thinking "i am an isolationist techno utopia. these fools are rolling in the mud together while i am ensconced in the work of the academy" and the next turn the game throws up the list of most advanced civilizations and you are the donkey idiot at the bottom

I worry in the next few years we're all going to have to have some patient, complicated conversations with older or less media-engaged relatives who see the le epic trump takedown posts but do not stuff like this about who Gavin Newsom Really Is

Thanks Gavin Newsom!!!

LLMs don't work for biology because sequence doesn't predict structure. The absolute best they can do is plagiarize a known functional sequence, they can't make a new discovery. Until we get enough compute (i.e. quantum computing) to do physics models, ML will be near useless in drug discovery.

Ayup. I work in antibody discovery in big pharma our hit rate for in vivo & in vitro screens is ~60% I've screened over 10k predicted molecules from partners at the big AI labs in SF this year. They have produced a total of 2 hits, both of which were plagiarized from molecules on the market already

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare. In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

"Moved files onto the open internet without permission" is also literally just hallucination. We've known since 2022 that these things do shit you ask them not to do, and that this is a fundamental flaw of the architecture that can never be fixed So they're correcting it with marketing instead

The first gov't agency to realize Oracle is worthless will have a hundred-year reign

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Case in point: a while back, Mamdani announced the creation of a tech office to improve government services. For people who cover govt and tech, this was a legitimately big story. Mamdani even held a press conference and made staffers available for comment. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/mamdani-in...

As a former ELL teacher, I accept truly any comprehensible pronunciation unless a student aims for more. But I will NEVER accept the hundred contradictory raving mad phonics systems Anglophones bludgeon learning readers with when IPA is right there.

Merriam-Webster@merriam-webster.com

macabre = “muh-KAHB” Worcestershire = “WOOSS-ter-sheer” omnipotent = “ahm-NI-puh-tunt” reticent = “RET-uh-sunt” epitome = “ih-PIT-uh-mee” myriad = "MEER-ee-ud" Never make fun of someone if they mispronounce a word. It means they learned it by reading.

It is objectively easier for someone learning a language, especially their own, to learn maybe twelve more characters with exactly one pronunciation instead of learning three or four competing orthographies in a language that has basically NO orthography.

"mark zuckerberg" is largely a construct of markets, no more real or human than a futures contract or a corporate debt bond. some developments regarding it involve a weird freckly bag of meat but that's not "mark zuckerberg" and its existence is largely incidental.

Most rural areas have a ruling class. And they want cheap unfree workers & to pass their fiefdoms on tax-free forever. It ain't rocket science. The fact that we're scared to talk about THAT, ime, is what's costing us a lot of rural voters!
