You've got to be kidding, @github.com 🤯. Instead of releasing two new copilot branded features per week, how about making the PR code review feature usable? This should be in your interest. With LLM-generated code, a good review experience is now more important than ever!
Holy fuck. It's one thing for Microsoft to silently replace Windows notepad with their new AI-integrated version of notepad. But it's an entirely different level of malice to go out of their way to actually prevent people from associating .txt with the original notepad.exe. I'm so done with Windows.
I also think about the engineer(s) who implemented this dialog and the change to denylist notepad.exe. Were they spineless yes-men? Or were they taken for a ride with smooth talk about "protecting users from themselves" or data-driven nonsense like "98.7% of users love the new notepad"?

Why do you even care? If a user doesn't want your new AI bullshit version of notepad, you are not going to win them over anyway. And the audacity, to think you have any say in which application I use to interact with my files, shows a staggering disconnect between MS decision making and their users.
TIL NVMe SSDs are now cheaper than SATA SSDs. I mean economically, in terms of volume, it makes sense, but just a few years ago a large m.2 stick was a decadent luxury good 🤯 Now it's like: "if I had more PCIe lanes, I'd buy another m.2, but I guess I have to go with the pricy SATA option instead"
Least favourite thing in video games by far: endlessly re-spawning minions in boss fights. It's just so antithetical to how I approach challenges: one problem at a time.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is phenomenally fantastic 😍 Excellent sound track, excellent story, fun gameplay. If you go for it, have a pack of tissues at hand. Trust me #clairobscur
What are essential minor indignities anyone who has actually worked in your career knows, but would never be realized by a fake? Like sorting IP addresses in Excel for IT.
The "desktop mode" toggle once again comes to the rescue. Countless times colleagues at work have stared at mobile Firefox in envy as it lets me fool poorly written enterprise apps into cooperation while they are forced to unpack their laptops to have a three row <table> displayed.
In the past, most synthesizer music was set in the future, but nowadays, most of it is set in the present or the past. This is not necessarily a bad thing and probably natural, but we now lack an instrument which ekoves the future, so we should think about nominating a new one.
Don't get a Lenovo P16 Gen 2 workstation laptop if you plan to carry it around, I guess 😑. It's a very powerful laptop, but it can still operate with all fans turned off in "power saver" mode. YET when you put it into sleep ("modern standby"), the fans turn back on! 🤯 1/3
Now, the premium Lenovo support was generally great. I've had technicians over who all shook their head in disbelief at how the machine behaved 😶. But now after half a year of back and forth, Lenovo have concluded that this insane behaviour is by design and that there is nothing they can do. 🤷2/3
I realize that Lenovo doesn't control the entire stack. There is only so much they can do at the OS level. But being unable to control system power draw in sleep either indicates incompetence or that sleep in modern PC laptops only works "by accident". @oxide.computer workstation laptop when? 😉3/3
Twitter account deleted. 🫥 I really dislike giving up my handle, but honestly that was about the only argument in favour of keeping the account. I scrolled through my timeline and pretty much everyone I care about has moved on. All I was doing over there, was blocking bot follows every now and then.
Ask yourself: how often do you use caps lock? Per day, roughly. Got a number? Good. Now ask yourself: how often do you use the escape key? If the answer to the latter is significantly higher than the answer to the former, then try to configure your computer to swap the two keys. Just do it.
I swapped the two keys last week. The FIRST day WAS very confusing. Now, looking back, I'm amazed at how quickly muscle memory of 20+ years of computer use has adapted. Feels as if escape was always there, between shift and tab. And not just for programming. Closing dialogs, closing drop downs, etc.
You are stumbling around in the dark with nothing but your phone at hand. The screen's illumination is not sufficient to find your way, with everything supporting dark mode nowadays. In that moment, have you ever spent time wondering which app or website would be bright enough to light the way?

What if we could actually do better than Git? I have spent the last six months using Jujutsu (jj), and… I think it actually has a shot.
I am so excited I also spent the last six months writing >10,000 words about it, so check it out! v5.chriskrycho.com/essays/jj-in...
We are lowering the prices for Proton Pass Plus.
As a community-supported company without venture capital investors, Proton is not primarily profit-driven. If we raise prices when costs increase, we believe it's fair to reduce prices when costs decrease.

Good news, die Vernunft obsiegte doch in Deutschland.
1. Kein KI-Gesetz wie in der EU
2. Kein Ausbau von Swiss Gov Cloud, digitale Souverenität adé.
3. Mehr "law and order"= mehr Überwachung
4. Stümperhafte Gesetze
5. Nächstes Xplain-Debakel

Oof :( just spent HOURS debugging a piece of Rust code that implements a buffered copy of a stream. Forgot to call `buf.clear()` -_-
Things is: looks extremely similar to using a fixed [u8; N] where that would be correct. But with a Vec, I forgot the call to `buf.clear()` 😭 But what I wonder is 1/2
What would a set of APIs (or language features) have to look like to make that bug obvious/impossible without sacrificing performance. Rust is otherwise great at efficiently enforcing things statically.
Why is this case different? (Is it? At least I can't think of a straightforward encoding)
tokio IS "thread-per-core" - the controversy in the Rust community is about a tradeoff between work-stealing and share-nothing without.boats/blog/thread-...

Bei Beschaffungen wandten die Bundesverwaltung und die Kantone zahlreiche Tricks an, die auf eine systematische Bevorzugung des Berner Unternehmens hindeuten. Xplain wurde wurde "too big to fail".

Yeah LinkedIn, sure! Wanna guess how I came across this banner? Because they started spamming me with "notifications" I never opted in to. Oh and their "simplification" is to add one more click to managing each kind of notification. Wish we had adopted the GDPR in Switzerland :( #darkpatterns
It requires a staggering 33 clicks (!) to opt-out of all notifications. And no, that's not deactivating each kind of notification individually. That's deactivating notifications at the coarsest level they allow. Each category requires you to navigate into it, hit disable and then navigate back.
15 year old me (circa 1979) had NO IDEA where this was going to end up when he first invented the Githyanki for a D&D campaign then submitted them to Don Turnbull for the Fiend Factory column in White Dwarf (which begat the Fiend Folio, and the rest is history) ...
One of my favorite bluesky features is that you can turn your domain name into your username here. That way YOU are in control of that identity. That way, the site owner can't simply claim your identity whenever they wish. https://blueskyweb.xyz/blog/4-28-2023-domain-handle-tutorial
