Living in a nation run by an actual fascist is very strange. Defrocked Latin dictators in Miami is a thing, but openly taking sides and sheltering far right Latin pols is kinda weird. The CIA used to do this stuff undercover cuz it didn't look good in the open. Now, no one cares how it looks.

Stock market is not at all pricing in a GOP rout. A big Dem victory could lead to trouble for the AI data center buildout, for one thing among many other risks the tech oligarchs will face. But so far, no concern whatsoever.

Dummy shoulda been on the first plane to Miami.

Flávio Bolsonaro had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian fed police as his brother Eduardo told him to flee to the US. He is tied to paramilitary gangs, is being investigated & lost his legislative immunity when he left the Senate to run for president. paydayreport.com/brazilian-fe...

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

Hit translate, then go to the 2nd post in this thread and do the same for the punchline.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Hungarian PM Péter Magyar: "I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students List, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them... I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle."

I have a straw hat too, but it's a jibaro (peasant for you non-PRs) hat. It was sold by Chi Chi Rodriguez, the only PR I know of to be successful in the PGA. It's a great hat to wear in the summertime, keeps the Sun off but because the weave is loose lets the breeze in so your head doesn't sweat.

Putin has managed to put the two people who love him most in contention for the French presidency. Quite a trick. The gullibility of the (alleged) left continues to truly amaze me. Or maybe it's just corruption, Putin's checks are still clearing. Who knows.

🇫🇷🤔 French Presidential Candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon: Russians are naturally our allies. And the times when they are not our allies, they are the ones invading us. If they attacked us, we would respond. But let us do nothing that would turn us into a co-belligerent against Russians.

Had their cheesecake, which is kinda meh (anyone who grew up in NYC knows what cheesecake is supposed to taste like, it's like BBQ in the South) but never had a complete meal there. If the cheesecake were better I might have considered it...

So, a few years ago I was trimming hedges and used one of the branches to sweep dead leaves off the stoop. I was amazed how well it works. Wife told me in Mexico they took the drunks they'd jailed on Saturday night, gave them a branch and made them sweep the streets on Sunday morning. I can see it.

Trump: "While oil prices are temporarily high ... the United States oil and gas business is making hundreds of billions of dollars"

To say this is a deeply weird market environment would be an understatement. Below, a chart of the 3 month correlation between SPX and SPXEW, the equal weight SPX. Friday's reading was a record low, and not by a little bit. It's still the case everyone thinks they're a market genius.

Basically, everyone thinks they can beat the market by rotating out of the big stocks and into the little ones. Over time they will probably be right, but when things get really bad correlations go to 1 and everything drops. They will find out it's not a foolproof way to avoid losses.

MRNA vaccines. For everything. It truly is a medical miracle. The statin drugs for cholesterol are another. My wife swears by Advil for pain. The device DRTS is developing MAY be the device equivalent, for cancer. It would really be something if it was.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Finding out what Chairman Birb has been up to is kinda like the time I found out a perfectly ordinary girl in my high school had been arrested for, well, stuff. I'm almost afraid to find out if the husband in there is Jamie. I liked him. If it is I'll have to light a candle for him.

Like clockwork, every year they drive it down. Bought a small position just at the close, now I'll just wait for the faintest drift of cold air to come wafting down from Canada.

My dad just used the legend as prelude to when an espiritista, which would translate as likely a believer in Santeria, set up shop. Incense was burned, my grandmother got scared. So my dad went over to visit and simply said "You know who my father is don't you?"

Just read, from a book about Corsicans who went to Puerto Rico, a version of an old story my dad used to tell. My grandfather on his side was legendary in the mountains for having fought with the devil and won. I always wondered where that story came from. Seems it was like this:

There was a small child in the house who was sick. A local priest came by to take a look and maybe help cure the child (don't ask me how) and declared the child had a devil in him. My grandfather got furious and told him to get out before he laid hands on him.

That's where the story ends in the book. Since all of his children survived to adulthood, that means this child got better. So probably that priest began spreading a story that he had fought with the devil and won, since of course how else would the child have gotten better?

how sure are we the guy was dead when the cop who stole his home found him

A Florida man was found dead in his home during a welfare check in July 2022. Weeks later, one of the officers who discovered his body moved into the home and spent years impersonating him, according to investigators.
