shoutout to a German court for getting the facts about Bluesky wrong but the interpretation right, in a new ruling that actually has positive implications for open social networks connectedplaces.online/the-algorith...

connectedplaces.onlineThe Algorithm, Apparently ChronologicalA German court has explicitly named Mastodon and Bluesky as positive examples of social networks that could retain hosting protection. It gets Bluesky’s feeds wrong, but its reasoning about user control might be more useful than it realises.
Laurens@laurenshof.online

I read the new EU Court ruling on algorithms and social platforms so you don't have to. Turns out to be the most consequential thing a European court has said about recommendation algorithms, and also it just breaks when you apply it to the atmosphere connectedplaces.online/the-algorith...

i used to be a data analyst, created many a sales dashboard in large orgs, and looking at the usage numbers on the dashboards that youve created was always a great way to realise that some bullshit jobs indeed exist and that mine was one of them

Laurens@laurenshof.online

i do appreciate the ai labs' steadfast conviction that the entire economy consists of creating sales dashboards

i do appreciate the ai labs' steadfast conviction that the entire economy consists of creating sales dashboards

my problem with this sort of 'proactivity' in models is it conflicts pretty hard with workflows that involve creating a plan first, and that trips the models up constantly as a result

hailey@hailey.at

this is imo a bad thing. it’s wild to me anyone is asking for this

im so dizzy now, but this is fun

Minor Mobius@minormobius.bsky.social

This is easily the best game I’ve made in the last 24 hours. games.mino.mobi/molt is NOT nausea inducing, it IS exciting, it does progress. I would hold it side by side with minesweeper orb for satisfaction

berjon.comFascintern MediaWe are facing a coordinated international fascist movement that works with explicit backing from Moscow, Washington, and tech monopolies, and is propagating itself through its own media apparatus. Yet people who claim to side with democracy keep doing work to support Fascintern media because they misunderstand how it works. This needs to change.

Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

Had a few hours to kill in Oslo, went to the Nobel Peace Center, and what a disappointment. It’s for people who think that if Hillary Clinton wins the next election everything will turn out fine again

My blog post that explains the latest #WSocial controversy is up: 🔗: blog.elenarossini.com/public-by-de... Disclaimer for W folks: this work is entirely self-funded, with childcare help courtesy of my family so I could write the first full draft on Sunday 💁‍♀️ #WIdentity #WSocialFacts #privacy

blog.elenarossini.comPublic by Design: How W Social Makes Their Verified Users’ Personal Details Visible on the Open WebA blog post explaining how the social network W Social is publishing as a record on the open social web the full names, nationalities and approximate birthdays of their verified users - who may be una...

i wonder which presentation of the same technology is more attractive and interesting to a teenager: - advanced Clippy to create slide decks for the Q3 sales report - a digital person that is so seductive the government had to ban all versions that present itself as a person

Felienne Hermans@felienne.bsky.social

If we want to regulate AI, why not start with a simple ban on LLMs using "I"? Easy to build, easy to verify and deflates a hype while still allowing people to use chatbots (so no one can claim we are limiting anything) My latest for @volkskrant.nl in English! www.felienne.nl/2026-10-08/#...

the extent to which the anti-ai movement consistently wants to do marketing for the big frontier labs is very funny

it is literally my job to write and analyse about open social media and how adoption of it works, and i dont think that these X vs bsky Discourse posts are particularly interesting? glad everyone has a great time Discoursing about it tho ig

the only real value in post like Gruber's is that he's remarkably dull as a commentator? agreeing or disagreeing with his statements is not meaningful, because Grubers statements are not meaningful: he consistently interprets what he sees on his timeline as a representative of the entire network

that said, what X is in public zeitgeist is determined by how media elite perceive it, not what X actually is, so in that sense posts that are false can still instantiate a shift in cultural perception, thereby making it 'true' but X as the place where the action is was already public zeitgeist

What’s perversely fascinating about the planned execution livestream is that this will likely turn into a political proxy fight between us and eu via platform content moderation imo Which platform is gonna stream this, and which platform will allow (partial? Edited?) clips of it?

Sophie in't Veld@sophieintveld.bsky.social

Barbarism. Pure and undiluted. Europe cannot remain silence and pretend this falls within the “shared values”. If any other country did this, the EU would issue a public condemnation.

I don’t see the eu having the guts to directly condemn the us for this, so platforms that do allow the content (or just don’t take it down effectively enough, which you can always find an example of if you want to) are a reasonable proxy

Dear friends who don't speak German: Go to YouTube ASAP, turn on subtitles → autogenerated translation and watch this video! TL;DR: #WSocial is posting legal names, nationalities and approx. birthdays of verified users as a public record on the Atmosphere. Confronted, they claim it's "by design" 🤯

Looking at the outcome is the wrong perspective, the question is whether it was the right call based on what the distribution of expected outcomes was for the information known at the time

Skywatch got another email from Shellenberger. He’s a crank yes, but Canada, Lithuania, and the EEAS pulling their sponsorship definitely speaks to some some sort of political pressure campaign targeting #Disinfo2026 and now I’m worried about if I’ll be able to get home without harassment.

Scoiattolo@scarnecchia.net

It seems pretty pathetic to try to intimidate a spam labeling service that has maybe 10K users max to drum up quotes for a substack.

like, what does this focus on eu regulation compliance actually do to the model? with claude you get that a lot of the corporate-safety stuff rubs off on the assistant persona, does government-regulation-compliance do something similar to the assisant persona?

i actually think the Le Chonk name is a good sign that Mistral is not purely and exclusively a compliance department for procurement requirements from brussels, but that the company has some of their own identity as well

benchmarks look pretty good. actually very excited to use this, the previous mistral models were too far behind in capabilities imo to for serious day-to-day use, but this is good enough that I'm actually very interested in how the model feels and what sort of persona they've trained into it

no idea what openai is doing today, im suddenly getting full reasoning traces as well on sol 6.1, instead of the summaries

i wonder if we're gonna see a version of Duchamp's Fountain but for GenAI, or if attention is so diffuse now that there is no real way for an artist who wants to create controversy to kick up a storm now

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

Can Gen AI do Art, the metaphysical creative process? Open question, depends on who you ask. Can Gen AI make Art, the product that people pay money for? Yes. They objectively can.

The core differentiating factor of Bluesky as a microblog is the default feed, and the value of the collective labor going into this potentially transformative affordance is dying on the vine

Ariel M. (she/her)@byarielm.fyi

But I also think the feeds I’m building are valuable and would be well-received if they weren’t dependent on word of mouth or seeing it randomly in explore or search

got frustrated this morning with nextcloud, spend my afternoon fighting the UI of Home Assistant (and losing), and thought 'is it too cynical to say that europeans should not do design', only to log in on mu.social and see in my 'fu' feed (official name) that W-social calls their posts "Weets"
