I became a Doctor yesterday 🥳 presented my thesis "What Others afford: sociotechnical shaping of normative processes on social media platforms". In it I describe how the way we all shape each other's behavior on social media is shaped by the architectures of the digital environments we inhabit.

So excited to be working on this paper with UPF colleague @jainamarguerrero.bsky.social fanfiction is a fascinating community to explore norm transformations in changing platform ecosystems!

Still chuffed and buzzing from the warm reception @nathalievanraemdonck.com ’s and my paper on fanfiction norms and Heated Rivalry received yesterday at #FSNNA26! ❤️ Loads of good for thought, thank you! That Discord was 🔥

very good overview of what we know so far on the impact of the Yandex bombing on the disturbance of Russian information operations (few hard evidence so far)

russianbots.america2.newsThe Russian Bot Collapse Report: did Russia's bots really go quiet?A sourced, live check on the viral claim that Ukraine's strikes on Yandex data centers silenced Russian social-media bots: what the data measures, what it doesn't, and who is spreading which claims.

Not saying Russia doesn’t have massive troll and bot infrastructure but it’s hopium (and factually inaccurate) to believe that the yandex datacenter bombing is wiped all their bots and shows that most far-right supporters are Russian FIMI bots. it’s also dangerous for the below reason 👇

Boo!-per Lund@cooperlund.online

I am very frustrated by the way that people dismiss everything they don’t like as a bot. It feels like a way to dismiss the idea that people with these beliefs exist and are closely held. Blaming foreign intelligence for it is just a way to wash your hands of the harder questions to answer.

Nathalie Van Raemdonck reposted

Again, none of its true. People are looking at graphs they don't understand and inventing stuff. Note the grifter language, "if confirmed" "its reported" No meta data! These graphs do not show russian propaganda bot disappearance, only normal internet information tool collapse.

Angry@angrystaffer.bsky.social

We’ve been talking about this for years. None of these far-right movements are organic.

"Adults are harmed when their data is leaked, but kids suffer more," writes Logan Kolas of the American Consumer Institute, arguing that age verification laws meant to protect children could put America "on a collision course with its newly discovered AI-augmented cybersecurity reality."

Just sharing the piece I wrote in 2024 when I was untangling how power could consolidate in Bluesky's stacked moderation middleware model www.techpolicy.press/where-does-p... a lot has moved in the meantime with way more platforms and servers that people can move around to!

techpolicy.pressWhere Does Power Consolidate on Bluesky?Nathalie Van Raemdonck says only time will tell how the pieces fit together and how they interact to create a new "public square."

props to France for standing firm where the EEAS, Lithuania and Canada buckled “We stick to supporting civil society. It’s not just principled, it’s operational" #disinfo2026

“What this amounts to is a purported defender of free speech at the state department using the enormous power of the US government to try to pressure Americans from criticizing their government.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

I do also understand that Lithuania's threat landscape is completely different than most EU countries and we must extend some grace to the host of #disinfo2026. They are caught between a rock and a hard place. It must suck when you feel like your bully can only be held back by the orange bully

An update on sponsors pulling out of #Disinfo2026 at the last minute. Michael Shellenberger has followed up his earlier email to panelists participating in the event with another email, that include the following statements:

An example of FIMI (Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference) in action at the @disinfo.eu conference? Apparently someone in the U.S. did not agree with the topic of a session named "USA as a FIMI threat: acknowledge, adapt, push back" and applied pressure on the sponsors...

With some delay, my op-Ed on the dramatic Saxony-Anhalt election. It is high time we focus our political struggle on strengthening democracy, rather than merely weakening the far right. To do this, we must show realism, resilience and restraint.

theguardian.comThe AfD’s win in Germany is a dark day for Europe. Time is running out to stop the far right | Cas MuddeThis party is among the most extreme in Europe. To protect our democracies, liberal parties must urgently change their tactics, says Cas Mudde, author of The Far Right Today

"we still use these platforms like it’s 2011. We shoot things off into the ether and hope people will somehow self-organize"

Waging Nonviolence@wagingnonviolence.org

Movements can still find people on social media. But the real organizing has to happen somewhere else — and getting people there is the part we keep skipping.

glad we have a word now for the cowardly abandonment of climate policy in attempts to protect "the economy" which will only tank more as the consequences of climate change become worse and worse: the doom loop

I said what I said. Y'all fall for this constantly.

Mekka Okereke@mekka.mekka-tech.com

The panic around Black women in academia? Half of y'all fell for that too. Some of y'all still have posts up about "Well, it's important that we protect against plagiarism!🤡" Then as quickly as you got loud about it, you all suddenly fell silent when Neri Oxman was subjected to the same scrutiny.

White supremacist "academic" Nathan Cofnas puts a black professor in front of the firing squad, and British media executed the eugenicists plan to have him destroyed. Shame on any academic participating in the plagiarism lynching squad for the sake of “academic purity”. Rest in Power Jason Arday

This is the coverage of Arday **just in the Telegraph** in the UK. This is only the first four pages of results, just in one outlet.

Policymakers HAVE the toolbox with the DSA to regulate social media to protect children. Bans are signs of lazy politicians trying to score brownie points with their electorate.

I'm been wondering if it would come to this and apparently it has. huge move from cloudflare, which hosts a fifth of all websites on earth.

Never read Babel as a cautionary tale against empire, where the punishment of plurality in languages was a "refusal to let one order claim the whole future". Great cautionary tale on AI, building a system that grows past our understanding will be the consequence of our own actions.

Justin Hendrix@justinhendrix.bsky.social

The real AI hazard isn't just misalignment, argue Jules Polonetsky and Omer Tene. It's Babel: teaching ourselves to treat "speech as output, judgment as computation and persons as data." The idol diminishes us before it ever comes alive.

WOW -- Danish reporter *goes there* with Rutte "You sit next to Trump when he talks about conquering Greenland, lashes out at allies like Spain -- things it doesn't seem like the old Mark Rutte would approve of. Does this have any affect on your self-respect when you sit there and say nothing?"

The ruling was brought back to my attention because @laurenshof.online did the fascinating exercise of figuring out what this might mean for decentralized platform infrastructures where algorithmic recommendations are not centrally governed bsky.app/profile/laur...

Laurens@laurenshof.online

I read the new EU Court ruling on algorithms and social platforms so you don't have to. Turns out to be the most consequential thing a European court has said about recommendation algorithms, and also it just breaks when you apply it to the atmosphere connectedplaces.online/the-algorith...

and I also liked how @tjmcintyre.com properly read the ruling and nuanced how a simple "reverse chronological feed" would not fall under this loss of exemption bsky.app/profile/tjmc...

TJ McIntyre@tjmcintyre.com

According to the CJEU, if a service goes beyond 'simple categorisation and indexation of information with a view to its better accessibility' and sorts content 'in the interest of the operator' then it can say goodbye to the hosting immunity and the prohibition on general monitoring.

The ruling also undercuts the DSA's risk mitigation regime which was built on liability safe harbour, But @stevepeers.bsky.social www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm... and Lorna Woods eulawanalysis.blogspot.com/2026/06/the-... do nuance the actual impact of this ruling bsky.app/profile/daph...

irishexaminer.comEU Court of Justice ruling may have just radically changed social media regulationThe rule exempting internet service providers from liability as a publisher is the foundation of modern social networks, but the court said it doesn't apply where an algorithm is used
Daphne Keller@daphnek.bsky.social

This is... insane. The EU spent untold hours of human labor and political effort to create the DSA's intricate system of rules for platforms. And the CJEU is just smashing it, like a toddler.

I don't disagree with the emphasis on algorithmic dissemination. Platforms are not just hosting when they determine the rules of what gets visibility; in this attention economy, being seen, not being hosted, is where the value lies. But I worry about lifting the exemption on liability.
