I like cooking, movies, books, Go/baduk, old-school shaving, Esperanto. I follow a whole-food non-animal diet (because health) with occasional exceptions. I make tempeh (black lentil & purple barley shown) & wrote a book on making it at home. (It's easy.)

One clear lesson: no nation should build into its military defense any reliance on the US for mission-critical functions. It is essential that nations not depend on the US for military defense. "Untrustworthy ally" doesn't touch it. The US has effectively joined Russia in seeking to defeat Ukraine.

Being a US ally is a high-risk proposition. Not only does the US not honor its commitments to its allies (and, to be fair, also to its citizens), but it is also apt to attack you and/or betray you to your enemies.

A couple of phrases that should be much more rarely used: "saying the quiet part out loud" Following the podcast intro: "Let's get into it."

The Maine Supreme Court unanimously got this right: Courts don’t have to ignore documented psychological harm, medical neglect or coercion simply because religion is involved. Faith deserves no special exemption from protecting a child’s well-being.

A pastor told an 11-y.o. girl that her father was persecuting her faith—while her mother made her sit and listen. Maine’s Supreme Court just upheld the father’s right to prevent his daughter from going to that church. The Christian Right is furious. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/maine-supr...

Wow! The US *does* have a significant population that is hostile to Canada. More power to Mark Carney.

A big problem we face is that most Republicans view anyone with a differing political view as a threat to America, an enemy, whereas most Democrats are under the delusion that such Republicans are just political opponents...and not the threat to America they really are.

In other administrations, wouldn't the responsibility for maintaining the reflecting pool be handled by a manager within the National Park Service and not involve the President at all? Doesn't the President normally have more important tasks? Like running the country, keeping the US at peace, etc.

@royalsociety.org I read that the Royal Society has Elon Musk as a Fellow. I had had enormous respect for the Society, but seeing it so swayed by wealth reduces that respect; learning that you hide comments on your diminished stands wipes out any remaining respect. Can you still feel any shame?

Toyota boss expressed a "fear" of a rapid switch to electric cars that would leave buyers of petrol and diesel vehicles behind" well yes, did Apple hold back the iPhone fearing dial phone users would be left behind? no.

After a year of studying Esperanto, I learned a lot and can carry on a rudimentary conversation but now realize how much more it offers (its literature, for example) and how much more I can learn — and how much deeper and more interesting it is than I realized. leisureguy.ca/2026/05/15/e...

@mjcoren.bsky.social Just read your very interesting (and, to me, convincing) article on upgrading from Kindle to Kobo for a less exploiative and controlling ebook reader. I have turned heavily toward free ebooks, and I wish you had mentioned StandardEbooks.org as a good source.

A superb read. Never understood the media saying that if they report the truth or report in a way he'll consider 'unfavorable', their access will be cut off. It works both ways. A man addicted to constant media attention/PR is going to deny access to the very people who give him what he craves?

More and more, we see why all of Trump's companies failed and went bankrupt, including even a casino. And now he's working his magic on the US, which seems headed for failure and bankruptcy.

Pretti died after asking a woman he was with if she was OK. Good died after telling the man who killed her that she wasn’t mad at him.

Nobody in America is safe. If Trump’s secret police force will execute a government employed VA nurse on camera for us all to see and then lie about it, then they won’t hesitate to kill you next and lie about you. This is fascism. They are Nazis.

People pin their hopes on the November midterms. Those now in power know that the midterms are their greatest threat. Maybe the current deployment of Trump's armed troops is a rehearsal for November. These goons, loyal to Trump, so far have immunity. Their number is likely to grow.

It's telling that, after shooting Alex Pretti, the federal agents fled the scene. This is totally unlike law enforcement behavior but typical of gang behavior. The Federal government is sending armed gangs into cities who shoot down civilians with impunity. America has now turned the corner.
