99% of Bostonโ€™s homes violate Bostonโ€™s zoning code. They are not illegal to live in, buy, or sell. But if Boston burned down tomorrow, it would be illegal to rebuild 99% of its homes the way they are today. When 99% of homes break the law, the problem is the law, not the homes. (1/8)

the navy isn't as much of a surprise but i was not expecting we'd get the United States Marines in the national divorce

Woah - boards of service in the Marines and the Navy are ignoring Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth's order to purge transgender troops from the military. "Navy and Marine Corps boards have voted to retain trans members in nine of 12 cases." www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...

You joke but the pollingโ€™s been consistent: the state of menโ€™s asses is a top-three issue in North Carolina.

Trump: "I'm studying his body. I've never studied the body of a man before. It's not my thing. Nothing wrong with it, of course. But it's never been my thing. But I looked at his ass. I said, 'His ass, shit, it's like a pile of muscle.' Then I looked at his legs and I said, 'Man, his feet are big.'"

In this vein I find it helpful to remember Elizabeth Anderson's argument that the point of education is not to reward merit, but to create it.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

DHS investigators not only took Ilhanโ€™s cell phone, they took her computers, notebooks and her passport! These seem like important details. (You can tell who doesnโ€™t read the full Wall Street Journal article: me.)

the permitting reform deal is extremely good and Dems should support it because 1. It will lower carbon emissions 2. It will not help Trump politically, and most of the benefits wonโ€™t be felt until 2029 3. we wonโ€™t get a better deal while Trump is President 4. We can always improve it in 2029

i mean, just look at how the populists talked about the railroad barons and others like them. "The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes, unprecedented in the history of the world, while their possessors despise the republic and endanger liberty."

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

plenty of 20th century examples by my 19th century-pilled mind goes immediately to the railroads, which were HUGELY DISRUPTIVE and deeply enmeshed in politics in ways quite analogous to silicon valley and AI

There seems to be a consensus building at the ICC that the 2030 I-Codes are going to allow four-unit buildings in the IRC, and now itโ€™s just a matter of the details. One proposal presented today would only allow two units stacked on top of each other, so no three-fams/triple-deckers/three-flats.
