This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

For the first time in over 30 years, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Northern cod stock has been deemed “healthy” by Ottawa. www.canadianaffairs.news/2026/09/05/i...

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

Looks scary for Chilean kelp :(

'This is now getting absurdly serious with the El Niño. The latest OSTIA SST data now has a peak anomaly of 8.1C above normal, with Peru reporting a peak SSTA of 9.5C. What's more concerning is that these anomalies are only going to increase over the next 10+ days.' David Schlotthauer [x]

Stalked jellyfish are a super rare group of jellies that don't float, but instead anchor themselves to the seafloor using a special 'foot.' To move, they do cartwheels, holding onto the seafloor using sticky pads between their pompom tentacles. 🧪🌿🌊

Is organization close to saddle-node bifurcations a generic principle underlying neural computations? 🧠 To know more, give a read to our recent effort in this regard👀

New preprint! RNNs solving an interval timing task self-organize near bifurcations, where structured slow transients drive computation. These slow scaffolds predict generalization to unseen intervals and are alone sufficient for timing! @mpinb.mpg.de www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Roughly half of STEM PhD students in the U.S. are international students. 75% of them stay in the U.S. long term after graduating to contribute their skills to U.S. scientific research and development. Cutting international student visas hurts U.S. science now and long into the future.

David J. Bier@davidjbier.bsky.social

Visas for international students were down 40% last summer, thanks to a slew of policies designed to throttle visa issuances and scare off students. Students from 40 countries are now outright banned.

Hey y'all. Love all the love for the program (we're pretty proud of it too). But the fact that the solicitation is archived does NOT mean that the program is shutting down. We're hanging in there, struggling through the uncertainty with everyone else.

Oh no. NSF Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program shuttered. This one leaves me winded. A good story from 2025 by @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social offers insight into what we are losing: www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

The data also reinforce a message that should be clear: American leadership in science and medical research requires far more than getting across the line on top-line budget negotiations and will require continued vigilance to track how HHS treats applications and existing awards.

Vadim Karatayev reposted

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted. What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards. Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
