I think artists and sex workers should have a natural allyship. Both of us are often told we should not be allowed to charge for our work if it is at all pleasurable. Both of us are wanted for what we can do, but our work is considered not worth paying for. We should stick together

Its worth knowing that private enterprise labels anything it can't meddle with politically as authoritarianism and anything it cannot control the culture of as a cult and anyone it cannot politically control the activism of or who reads books elitist. Thankfully this is just comedy.

So, the middle tier of management is always in a bit of a rough position in any company, because if they work well, it usually just means things continue to function. That’s not a super glorious place to be. But that does make for a soft target for AI job replacement. No one minds fewer managers!

And much of Oxford Street is going car-free from tomorrow! I don't even live in London anymore but I'm genuinely excited about this. If it works well, it could be one of Khan's big legacies. People have been talking about doing this for literal decades, and now it's happening.

This post in particular is really telling. It's saying - don't expect Democrats to simply right the wrongs. What Republicans take away in 4 years you must expect to spend 20 years to restore, fighting Democrats the whole way.

Actually, positive change is slow, difficult and incremental by nature. Destroying is fast, building is slow. It is easy to bring misery to people - any idiot can do it, as Trump shows - but very hard to improve their conditions. Building a better society is slow, careful, patient work.

This is such a banger perennial point, whether it’s taking about power generation, IT, or social issues.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

in my experience, people who were exposed to severe Christian homophobia in the 2000s were protected against "Just Asking Questions" transphobia of the 2010s precisely because we realize that it never stops at "these are human beings" and always goes to cruelty

every now & then someone on the anti-trans side will get cold feet about how openly ugly it's all getting—they want to keep the image of a nice, sensible centrist but it's never enough for them to get off the train

The statement “I think that gender dysphoria is real” that people, from Jesse Singal to JK Rowling, espouse is an empty statement, devoid of substance, passed off as a deeply meaningful position of nuanced support.

“Trans people exist” and “gender dysphoria is real” instead flows to “trans-identified-males are men who wish to gain access to women-only spaces” often with “to sexually abuse them” added on to the end. It’s real, but it doesn’t mean anything — trans people are delusional and violent.

So I guess my question is: given the bland assertion — “gender dysphoria is real” — what, if anything, is Jesse calling for? What does a lack of cruelty look like to him? Or is it just him covering his ass before saying real trans people with real gender dysphoria need to sit down and shut up…

“Trans women are women” defines an actionable relationship: trans women should be treated as women (and provided reasonable access to women’s spaces as women). Many trans rights activists will even be willing to negotiate on what reasonable access should look like (e.g. HRT for 2 years for sports).

“Trans people exist” and “gender dysphoria is real” works if you then follow it to the logical conclusion that we follow supported medical treatments for it (e.g. WPATH), but my observation is that Jesse and JK don’t advocate for that.

It’s like saying, “I believe trans people exist” — it’s great that you believe this factual thing, but what does it mean for your decision tree? “Gender dysphoria is real: it’s a mental illness best treated with lithium or lobotomy” can be a logical extension of the statement.

I'll reflect on this - why can't I support the trans community and still believe that females shouldn't compete against males? I don't give af how many hormones you've taken, it's an unfair advantage - Martina Navratilova agrees with me...AND WE'RE BOTH LESBIANS

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years. The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to. There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!

Florida Freedom to Read Project@flfreedomread.bsky.social

Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review. Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law. None of this is normal. freedomtoreadproject.substack.com/p/when-ai-de...

Bosses, this is your friendly reminder: “Don’t shoot the messenger — if you get in the habit of shooting messengers, you stop getting messages.” You want bad news delivered to you earlier and more reliably than good news, so you want to encourage people to share bad news (instead of hiding it).

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

In my story, the project lead lost his job because he'd kept the bosses in the dark about the problems, convinced they'd be fixed before anyone knew. At Theranos Holmes comitted massive fraud. But does she actually know that? That's one of the more fascinating questions of the movie.

Technically, the project lead is responsible for his own actions, but he is clearly the product of this and other, earlier environments.

This sounds like an indicator that the AI bubble is creaking under pressure. If Nvidia is forcing corporate customers to take delivery of the AI chips now, that suggests either: - Nvidia is trying to maximize the profit-per-chip now - Nvidia is trying to maximize the amount of cash-in-hand

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

NVIDIA seems to be channel stuffing, forcing Amazon and other customers to take early delivery. The argument that these things are "scarce" when you don't even have anywhere to plug them into is nonsense...unless NVIDIA is saying you NEED to take them now, or else. GPUs are stacked in warehouses.

In the former, it means they’ve shifted to prioritizing short-term profits, suggesting a market collapse is imminent. In the latter, they would be worried that their debtors won’t be able to pay their obligations (likely because of bankruptcy).

If you are looking for a delicious cyberpunk book to read, may I recommend Nameless. It’s somewhere between C.S. Friedman’s This Alien Shore and George Alex Effinger’s When Gravity Fails: there is a mystery with increasing stakes, set in a rich world that balances grittiness and hope for humanity.

It’s depressing to see schools use AI to create flyers, banners, & t-shirts. When I was in high school the faculty would come to the art department to have students create these things. I learned so many skills that have followed me my entire professional life. That’s what I thought school was for.

Conservatives get very upset when you answer their question directly, force them to own the subtext of the question, and expose the bad-faith politics underneath all of it. You cannot separate this from the context of the President calling AES a “jihadist” and “Mohammad” at his rallies. You can’t.
