Your monthly reminder that if you're using ChatGPT to do your science, you're failing your colleagues, community, and all of us. Here, ChatGPT makes up data and presents it as the real thing — then apologizes when confronted.

Third, automating science is not really possible in the way described. In the same way a machine cannot eat food for us because we'd starve: scientific understanding is for us to experience and share with others as a psychological state. It's a process and a cognitive state not an output.

It's not like biology has a single definition for life — nor do they need a definite meaning to start work. The whole point of science is the understandings produced by the work: that's what knowledge production is. You don't put definitions in and out comes something else. You toil to understand.

This is so unrealistic in both genetic and financial ways. Behavior genetics is too complex to engineer. there is not enough money in the working dog market for this. And yes, massive cruelty.

Liz Hare, PhD reposted

One thing about all these techies fired up to gene-engineer dogs or their own offspring or other living commodities is that none of them know how a genome works

Liz Hare, PhD reposted

This is quite simply not going to work, and in the process of not working is going to reach absolutely horrific levels of animal cruelty

I am grateful today for this year's new Covid and flu shots. I didn't think we would have easy access to them this year with the destruction of the public health system here in the US. Yay science.

Today marks World Day Against the Death Penalty. The death penalty is cruel, racist, and unpopular in our country. It must be abolished.

Yes I miss Science Twitter!

Dr Lauren M Robinson@drlmrobinson.bsky.social

I hate that Musk destroyed Twitter because I still think about my most dedicated followers and the friends I made from it. In a pre-LLM time, real connections were lost and if you were one of the Twitter dedicated/friends, you weren't forgotten 💜

Gaaahh I just LOVE the research I get to do for WCAG 3 as a W3C Invited Expert! The biggest hurdle for me is financial. I’m a self-employed contractor & consultant. Most of my time is finding paid work. All tips, donations, & referrals enable me to have more space for volunteer research. 🩷

I’m in a hard spot & working with limited executive function capacity. I could use help finding freelance, contract, or consulting leads. 💜 Hard to share. But here are my links too. TJ: ashleemboyer.com/tip-jar. CA: cash.app/$AshleeMFisher. PP: paypal.me/ashleemboyer. V: venmo.com/u/ashleemboyer.
