Amazing collaboration with the Bowman lab. FLIM reveals hidden layers of plant-AMF interactions!

Adam Bowman@adam-bowman.bsky.social

With @lmueller.bsky.social we found that standard WGA-Alexa488 membrane stain shows amazing FLIM contrast when labelling symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. We acquire over 10^10 photons / second and achieve ~20 picosecond pixel noise. Note the narrow lifetime range:

ECRs, one week to go! Please join us for an exciting event: The Sainsbury Laboratory Summer Conference in Plant-Microbe Interactions for Early Career Researchers 20th – 31st July 2026 Norwich, UK Application deadline: 12:00 BST (UTC +1) Monday 30th March 2026 www.tsl.ac.uk/tsl-summer-c...

Excited to share this new Tansley article from our lab! We discuss how plants differentiate between different microsymbionts to ensure beneficial symbiosis outcomes, comparing nodulation and AM symbiosis. @newphyt.bsky.social

Great review from @lmueller.bsky.social -> Signaling peptides control beneficial and pathogenic plant-microbe interactions | Journal of Experimental Botany | Oxford Academic

academic.oup.comSignaling peptides control beneficial and pathogenic plant-microbe interactionsInteractions between organisms, such as those between plants and microbes, require extensive signaling between and within each organism to detect and recognize the partner and elicit an appropriate response. Multiple families of small signaling peptides regulate plant interactions with beneficial or pathogenic microbes, and sometimes both. Some of these signaling peptides transmit information between different cells or organs of the host and allow plants to orchestrate a coordinated response towards microbial mutualists or pathogens. However, not only plants produce signaling peptides required for the interactions. Microbes themselves also secrete peptide signals, which are detected by host receptors and required for infection. Among these are microbial peptides mimicking those of plants, allowing mutualistic or pathogenic microbes to hijack endogenous plant signaling pathways and evade the host immune system. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of current knowledge on host- and microbe-derived signaling peptides and their cognate receptors regulating mutualistic and parasitic plant-microbe interactions. Furthermore, we describe how microbes hijack endogenous host signaling pathways, and discuss possible crosstalk between the plant signaling pathways controlling mutualism with those modulating immune responses to pathogens.

Proud to present the first data paper from the lab, published today in @pnas.org. We describe a new mechanism for CLE peptides as local symbiosis-amplifying signals, promoting plant interactions with beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Congratulations @sagarbashyal.bsky.social et al.!
