Are you a gamedev who's not using any GenAI in your pipeline? I'm currently compiling a list of such statements, either in the press, social media, or directly through your credit roll. Feel free to add more examples below.

In a world of AI gameslop, let’s actually have some fun. 🔥 Three demos we think you should check out this Next Fest: 1️⃣ Guns ‘n Goblins 2️⃣ DreadHaven: The Last Colony 3️⃣ Night Hike And all enjoyable in a variety of languages thanks to LocQuest. Fighting gameslop, one loc at a time. 🛡️

One of the most challenging localization projects we ever took at @locquest.bsky.social, but it was all worth it for that sweet forensic science credit! Congrats to the whole team @thekillingstone.com, you guys deserve all the success in the world 💖

The Killing Stone@thekillingstone.com

The Killing Stone, starring @emmagregoryvoice.bsky.social & @voiceofobrien.bsky.social is out NOW! Can you beat the Devil at his own game? 🕯️🩸🪨 😈 youtu.be/tO1FtKzrSG4?... Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/2781470/... Sony: store.playstation.com/en-us/concep... Xbox: www.xbox.com/en-US/games/...

Lifehack: To avoid digging through mountains of slop, look up which demos are localized by professionals. When it comes to cutting corners with AI, translation is usually #1 on the list, so if it's done properly, you can be sure there's little to no slop in the code/art/etc.

NEW: Unity is automatically opting Asset Store creators into supporting its generative AI platform, Unity Spark, via a process called 'itemisation.' One dev told Vertical Slice the process should be "opt-in instead of opt-out" and said they are firmly against genAI.

A friend talked about a mobile game he was playing that had weird translation issues. That got me to thinking about what the cause of those issues could be, and considering the wider question of how many factors can influence a translation before even considering an individual translator's merits. 🧵

Have you been working in the publishing side of localization (translation, editing, lettering) and want to share (publicly or anonymously) your concerns heard? I'm working on a story about just that. My dms are open and I'm also over on signal (riderstrike.152).

Translators seldom have access to the dev builds of the games they work on. About 95% of the time, we get (at best) a couple of screenshots and a few paragraphs explaining the concept. The rest is just rawdogging Excel files and a million queries

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

It's not often you get to work on a game that was originally released before you were even born... and I'm no spring chicken 💀 Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns, a remaster of the 1986 Amiga classic, is now available - with French localization by yours truly!

Lifetime award achievement unlocked 🏆 I've been featured in Vladimir Sechkarev's new book about #gameloc, "Искусство утраты. Трудности перевода и локализации в игровой индустрии", loosely translated as "The Art of Losing: Translation and localization in the video game industry"!

This book covers a wide variety of gameloc topics across 320 pages, from the primordial chaos of the 90s to the present day, as well as in-depth case studies. A treasure trove of information for anyone interested in the topic!

Vladimir reached out a few months ago to discuss the history of the field, hardships faced by localization specialists in modern days, and share whatever little knowledge I had to impart for future generations. Perhaps I'm a little biased, but if you can understand Russian, it's a must-read ;)

I recently completed a LQA project that had me bawling like a baby (for like, good, narrative-related reasons), and it reminded me just how much I love this job. So, so incredibly lucky to still be able to do this, despite the depressing state of the industry. I'll never take it for granted.

Game devs, please have a look at this article, as well as those that hopefully will follow! Understanding the degeneration of localization is key to get why you shouldn't just leave the process to whomever does it cheaper.

Imagine being a designer, opening Photoshop, trying to add a layer or rasterize a picture, and getting hit with a warning: "You can't do that without the approval of your superior". This is what some CAT tool providers are doing. (Original screenshot by Andy Tang)

The loc industry has a genuine issue with infantilizing its users. At the end of the day, CAT tools are glorified text editors - Why would I ever need the approval of my PM to use the most basic of features?

It's not just dictating which version of the editor you're using, either - Changing the tagging? Segmentation? Adding/removing TBs/TMs? Everything's locked behind PM accounts. No thanks, I'd much rather have full control over my workflow.

Localisation is far more difficult than the public realises. It requires art, design, engineering, translation, and production logistics have to all align in the right way to ship something good. It is not something you can slap in at the end.
