I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

When I was in middle and HS, no one at my HS was out, and teachers made gay bashing jokes to bond with the kids.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I moved to NYC @ 22 in '96. most would say past the Voice's heyday but I loved reading Tom Robbins & Wayne Barret's exposes of Giuliani, J Hoberman on film, Greg Tate on music Tom Tomorrow's cartoons, Dan Savage's sex columns . . .Hell Gate comes the closest to that spirit of anything around now.

I just posted a whole thread about why you should subscribe to @hellgatenyc.com immediately, but here's the TL;DR: We're fun, brave, independent. We've been covering the BK Dems, NYC courts & judges like crazy. We'll keep covering NYC like this JUST FOR YOU. This week is our most generous sale ever:

This is true and I'll say we have such amazing faculty and students we make it work despite the lack of resources and infrastructure. other places where academics are being fired and programs closed won't be so lucky

"Are the machines as smart as us" is a question you might ask if you decide caring for a baby, nursing the sick, cooking a meal, making ethical choices and building relationships are not features of intelligence.

Tom Scocca@tomscocca.bsky.social

“Are machines becoming just like humans?” keeps being a skill issue posing as an existential conundrum

a BS issue doesn't respond to compromise. Transphobia like xenophobia doesn't respond to a real problem so there's no way to neutralize the issue by catering to the fear. Has deporting people *ever* led to, "ok, he fixed immigration, now we can go back to healthcare?" Blood demands more blood.

Sean T. Collins@seantcollins.com

3 things about Dem politicians who dabble in transphobia: 1. It's wrong, they're wrong, on a moral basis they're being evil 2. It's stupid, they're stupid, they'll never get any credit from the fascists for it 3. It's proof you're not capable of reading or rising to this, and therefore any, moment

I'm no expert but from my experience with unions it's often about control more than money.

Bryce Covert@brycecovert.bsky.social

It always seems like it can't be true, but it is: American businesses often pay more to try to defeat a union drive or contract negotiation that they would if they recognized the union and agreed to better pay and benefits prospect.org/2026/09/08/u...

I can’t wait for the 18 part series in the Atlantic about “The Crisis at Business Schools” which will detail of every instance of academic fraud at the nation’s top business schools, the coverups, lack of accountability, and their implications for business ethics and academic standards at B schools.

My top 5: 1) In short, Libya is a study in contrasts. 2) In a way, we're all winners. In another, more specific way, he is the winner and you are the loser. 3) Lisa, I would like to buy that rock. 4) D'oh! A dear! A female dear! 5) Mel Brooks was Jewish??

The 5 Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most off the top of my head: 1. It’s a pineapple – plenty ripe too! [while squeezing one of my kids’ heads] 2. Do you mean the movie – or the planet? 3. We’ve tried nothin’ and we’re all out of ideas 4. You don’t make friends with sal-ad! 5. Diagnosis: delicious!

In 2000 or so, when I was involved in grad student unionization at NYU, where I made 13K a year as a TA teaching (not assisting) two classes/semester, a reporter from the Times wanted to profile some of us. I said no because I lived in Park Slope w/2 roommates in a below-market situation (1/2)

I would lose shortly thereafter, but I was worried the name of the neighborhood would make it look like I was rich and make the union look bad. This kind of shit is insidious.

Great conversation. I also find it interesting that the re-issuing of Dahl's books without their most racist images was treated as a "cancellation" or woke amock or whatever but the pillorying of him in Giant has been lionized.

"Producers—and prize juries—love plays like these because they appear edgy but don’t really challenge prevailing views.” @alisasolomon.bsky.social and Arielle Angel discuss ‘Birthright,’ a new play about a tired debate. jewishcurrents.org/birthright-s...

I agree with this *and* also I think AOC's inartful words gave us an opportunity for a necessary conversation. It's interesting that Zohran has more artfully abandoned defund - in a position of power where policing is much more relevant than congress and mostly gotten a pass from the left.

Zito@zeets.bsky.social

Worked out my anger about the craven dismissals of the 2020 protest movement over at The Nation www.thenation.com/article/acti...

I love Zohran as much as everyone and I'm not necessarily condemning the choices he's made! But if we're in the electoral game we need to be real of the compromises involved, not pouncing on someone one minute and then making an exception for your fav

My husband Drew wrote this at breakneck speed while moving cross-country and caring for an 8 month old, bc he felt it was necessary, ethically and politically, to correct the record. If you read Tyler Austin Harper's piece, I hope you'll read this.

The Drift@thedriftmag.com

Andrew Baker was also a “token black professor” at Bates College. But his perspective on the events Tyler Austin Harper recounts in his Atlantic cover story is very different. Read Baker’s side of the story online today. newsletter.thedriftmag.com/p/racism-and...

It says a lot about which academic stories get media coverage that multiple non-academics I know asked me about the Jason Arday story, but no one I know outside of the academy had heard about the University of Minnesota paying $250,000 for rescinding a job offer to Raz Segal due to donor pressure.

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

Man, I only just caught with this story. What a tragic ending. www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/afdfd24...

Huh I wonder what happened to that mayor since then and if he turned out to be a good role model for statesmen to emulate. Someone should check in on that guy.

CNN@cnn.com

Twenty-five years after the mayor of New York City became the champion of America's grief and resilience at the time of the 9/11 attacks, families of those killed are split on whether the current mayor should attend the annual remembrance. https://cnn.it/4zkKYdc

And this is also a the essence of the problem with mainstream Democrats who said Trump is a fascist before the election but that we had to work with him the day after

Robert Komaniecki@komaniecki.bsky.social

Yeah I think this is the one thing sticking with me too. If you’re gonna go nuclear in the primaries and call the guy an antisemite, then what does it mean when you cheerfully endorse him? Were you lying then, or are you cool with endorsing an antisemite now?

Laura Tanenbaum reposted

I'm weirdly upset by Stevens's gracious concession, because it makes her lie from just a few days ago that AES harbors personal animus against Jewish ppl all the more transparent. We should discourage lying to inflame tensions against two targeted religious minorities for personal political gain imo

All the Fauci stuff is a modern day version of the POW/MIA stuff after Vietnam - a way to try to rewrite the history of a huge failure of conservative ideology to be instead a story about how liberals and foreigners stabbed us in the back.

A watershed piece. America will have have a very hard time becoming less imperialist as long as combat service is sentimentalized and fetishized, when it actually tends to turn men into broken, hateful people, and helps make things like like Trumpism happen. www.newyorker.com/news/the-pol...
