If Burnham's care plan only applies to the over 65s, the only people left paying for their own care will be working age disabled adults - eg the people with the least opportunity to save for it That would make the PM's plan less 'solve a national crises that blights lives', more 'win an election'

Breaking news: you can't be disabled if you're young!

Frances Ryan@francesryan.bsky.social

Disability doesn’t care how old you are. Specialist food is no cheaper if you’re 19. Employers don’t lose their prejudice if you’re 21. This is blatant intergenerational inequality from Labour. Younger disabled people of all severities deserve better. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Disabled young people actually have a harder time in the job market because - they haven't been able to establish a career before facing ableism - everyone thinks they're faking This is really disappointing from Labour

Anyone saying people fake disability to rake in benefits instead of working hasn't filled in the Universal Credit Work Capability form. Not a single question about work, but 2 pages detailing how often you shit yourself. Purposefully dehumanising for an extra 217 quid a month

Condemnation is pure hot air if in the next breath you’re telling everyone you’re doing your best to give the fascists what they want, just without the masks

Liam Thorp@liamthorp.bsky.social

Exclusive: I asked Andy Burnham about the gangs of masked thugs marauding around parts of our country and asked if he and his government should be doing more to call out their actions He called them ‘poisonous’ amongst other strong words. His condemnation was unequivocal. Full story here 👇

Care free at the point of use is obviously the way to go and kudos to Burnham for finally saying it But if we're going to reform social care properly we can't only talk about funding. We need to ask what it is we want a care service to do - and then work out how we pay for it

I don't... hate the draft recommendations of the Timms review but they ignore one fundamental problem PIP is designed to 'meet the extra costs of being disabled' - but for most people it doesn't come close to doing so

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day Tomorrow sees MPs vote on a bill that would see some suicidal people helped to die instead of helped to live - because they're sick and disabled We can't create a world where some suicides are not only approved, but state sanctioned

Of course they've released the Equality Impact Assessment for the new assisted dying bill at 9pm on the Friday before the bank holiday weekend Almost like they don't want it to get covered

The transphobia -> ableism pipeline is alive and well, I see

In a move that will surprise absolutely no one who's been paying attention, Stock has decided that women with disabilities are suffering from "social contagion"

Andy Burnham correctly points out in an interview that small boat crossings are massively down this year compared with last. The comments in the post are filled with people suggesting he is lying about this very clear, data-evidenced fact. It’s almost as though they don’t want it to he true…

Bloody hell, have Labour started talking to disabled people?? Burnham says any move to allow assisted dying should not happen until the government funds better social and palliative care.

£18.5bn seems like a lot of money but would ultimately save a LOT more across the NHS, benefits, lost earning potential of disabled people and carers, boost to employment etc Oh, and it would raise the quality of life of hundreds of thousands of people. Should be a no brainer

Least surprising poll finding you’ll ever see: 73 per cent of people think that the investigation into Nigel Farage’s finances should continue even if he wins the Clacton by-election.

Peak right-wing populism to run a "the people vs the establishment" contest when "the people" are represented by a man with several million pounds in undisclosed gifts. Just a regular chap like you or me

Will Labour fight this where they should - corruption - or will they inexplicably spend the entire time trying and failing to win an argument on small boats? Why do I feel like I already know the answer?

Calling a by-election over the sovereign right of every MP to take secret gifts from a convicted criminal. What a time to be alive.

Would be great if more people linked Starmer's resignation yesterday with today's Brexit anniversary but I suppose that would involve a level of introspection that this country couldn't possibly handle

As a disabled person, I was overjoyed to see a Labour government. I thought Starmer would push back on the hate the Tories had fuelled. Instead he bequeathed us the hate-filled debates around Pip and assisted dying. I'm not sorry that his emotional goodbye today didn't move me. Good riddance

The assisted dying campaign made last year hell. I lost close friends, got more hate than ever before, and felt anxious a lot of the time. I can't believe that thanks to a *Labour* MP, that was not only all in vain but I now have to do it again. I'm not sure I can

The worst possible news

Paul Brand@paulbrand.bsky.social

NEW: The Assisted Dying Bill is returning to Parliament this week. Labour MP Lauren Edwards will reintroduce it on Wednesday after coming 2nd in the private members’ ballot. “The process has been frustrated by a small minority”, she argues.

Regular reminder that what Britain desperately needs is “low skilled” care workers - and that these jobs are not actually low skilled at all and should be welcomed by an immigration system that appreciates their huge value. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

ahem

When Starmer eventually goes I hope we remember to trace the beginning of the end to when he insisted on spending months marching Labour MPs up the massive hill of cutting disability benefits only to gut the bill on the day of the vote

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.

Just a little reminder that if your Pride celebration doesn’t include/provide access for the disabled people in your community, it is as exclusionary as if you took a letter out of the LGBTQIA+ umbrella

When the father of a murdered son makes a public statement saying "we do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension", then I believe it's incumbent on any news outlet reporting on Farage's comments to ensure people know he has chosen to disregard the family's wishes.

Yes, and - Some people cannot work - Some people need those benefits *to* change their lives

Pat McFadden MP@patmcfaddenmp.bsky.social

"How can we help you change your life?" This is the questions that our welfare system should be asking, not simply ticking boxes of what benefits someone is entitled to. This how we build a working state, not a welfare state, where work and opportunity are at the heart of policy.

The media and politicians make out that the public is crying out for disability welfare cuts That just isn't true
