she didn’t even get fired lol, she tried to get fired repeatedly so she could become a martyr but much to her obvious annoyance the university kept backing her until she left voluntarily to join the Bari Weiss Extremely Real and Serious University

fuck this ableist prick. one thing that sets me off so bad is being accused of faking symptoms/severity! these ignorant assholes would crumble instantly if they had to endure any of the pain they claim isn't real.

Remembering when I used a cane to walk and take the bus at 24 and people treating me like I was faking it. It was undiagnosed blood cancer, btw.

Yes. I’m in favour of anything which increases the possibility I might someday get into a homoerotic lesbian sword fight. I mean, I’d lose, but that’s half the fun.

Poliomyelitis or simply polio, is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by three types of poliovirus. The poliovirus is a virus that destroys nervous system causing paralysis. www.childrenshospital.org/conditions-t... Myalgic Encephalomyelitis #pwME #LongCovid @longcovidadvoc.com

Oh it is so nice to be a progressive man and just dismiss K Stock. But you fail to engage with her observations. Many "conditions" are due to social contagion, what is fashionable to have, what is "right" to fit in. She is right to point out that having a prop is a fashion statement.

Evidence? Not all observations deserve to be taken seriously. Esp when they come from someone whose credentials in the field of epidemiology and public health are...*checks notes* completely non-existent. I may as well demand you take serious my belief that there are now too many green dogs.

Okay, but like, why does this person care if people have walking sticks? Aside from the arrogance of assuming people are adopting maladies to be trendy, it's not your business! Why do they even think they have any business talking about what objects people choose to hold in public?!

This happened a while ago, and it brought 'Star Trek' to mind. Sometimes people say or do things that make you wonder. bsky.app/profile/meow...

Today at work, a guy came over and asked, "Hey, do you know if there's a female in the restroom? I came in with a female, and I can't find her anywhere, so could you check and see if there's a female in there?" And I couldn't help but think of...

The concept of social contagion was popularised to my knowledge by the charlatan Gustave Le Bon, in his infamous essay, "La foule". He plagiarised it from Hippolyte Taine's Les Origines de la France Contemporaine (I'm sure he used it elsewhere too) ->

In Le Bon's pseudoscientific work, he postures like a physician, who can cure society from the greatest of evils, socialism, and stop the participation of the masses in civic life. "Social contagion" indicates the crowd's supposed irrationality when together; ->

It was then incorporated via Freud's Massenpsychologie un Ich-analyse in the tradition of social psychology. It's refreshing that these people use the theoretical instruments of reactionary conservatism. It just seems to make everything tidier.

Honestly fuck the haters, as much as they try to deny it, at least there’s media representation now in series like Berry & Caprice For so many women in my generation the body rly has been keeping score

And YOU'RE a social contagion and YOU'RE a social contagion and YOU'RE a social contagion. Social contagion thinking is the true social contagion. Shlock Stock with no smoking barrels.

Oh, I did that while recovering from orthopedic surgery. Stuck my very nice wooden cane in front of a young lady to keep her from barging into me. She just hopped over it and kept going.

Let’s presume for one moment the premise: that some ARE using these because they like how they look or because they’ve convinced themselves they function better with them. So what? Is anyone worse off because of it? Did anyone decry rich old guys using walking sticks as a fashion statement?

Maybe more young women are using mobility aids because they NEED THEM and aren't ashamed of being disabled like you want them to be. "Wait, if I use this cane I won't be in pain for two days after going shopping? I'm using it!" as opposed to older generations who still won't use their damn canes.

My thoughts exactly. My mother's generation would rather suffer than use mobility devices to feel more comfortable and be in less pain. She would only use it if she fell over without it. And most of Gen X hasn't freed themselves from this kind of thought — yet.

I had a friend in college who was in a HORRIFIC car accident and she used a cane. She "pimped it out" (her words) put lights on it. Stickers. Tinsel. Tassels. It was really something!

I use two canes, and they have lanyards that attach to my wrists, which means my hands are always available without dropping them. I also have a backpack for carrying things longer distances because you can't carry a bag in your hand with a cane on your wrist.

It took much persuasion from my then boyfriend (now spouse) to start using a wheelchair rather than…just not going out because I couldn’t walk far enough - because of this sort of ridiculous guilt induced “I’m not *that* sick” thinking. I’m *glad* if young people now don’t deal with those feelings.

I am not young, but not a senior. As soon as I figured out I could reduce my pain & get out more I bought a rolling briefcase and a bright-colored cane.

Yes, but also, we're having an alarming rise in autoimmune disorders, especially in women and AFAB people and nobody in the highest halls of power talks about it except to say all those disabled folks are trend-hopping fakers they despise. As one such ill person, it's despair inducing. We also...

...don't even know WHY we're having this cataclysmic uptick in autoimmune disorders, there's all manner of hypotheses posed for why and how it's happening from PFAs to microplastics to "too much hygiene", but only doctors and disabled people shriek about this, not governments and politicians.

It's very much a side point to the boorish ableism, but if some women do happen to be using walking canes as accessories, who could possibly care? Men did that for literally centuries

And, my God, aren't there enough things to be concerned about in this world: like starving children, wars, famines, pandemics, etc., to even waste one second on people wanting or needing walking sticks?

i'm afab and don't pass as masc and keep getting made fun of by boomers on the bus for needing a stick so i have teeth in this but, a disproportionate amount of people think i should break kathleen stock's neck with my reinforced cane /jkflr

As someone with a female friend that has to use a cane due to a plethora of health issues (half of which she didn't even start life with), "hot takes" like this are why we need laws on equality in the first place. When dense people try to make their opinions the "default", the system stops working.

Unfortunately I think she’s (ironically enough) caught this nonsense from people like Simon Wessley, very much within the medical establishment (but not keen on evidence or disabled women).

Before I even considered the health-related realities, my first thought was that women were using walking sticks as self-defense against potential assault. My response was to nod & think, "That makes sense. Good on 'em." Which is a long way of saying "Fuck Kathleen Stock."

So, my daughter should just take her chances on face planting the pavement due to the risk of ankle, knee, or hip subluxation? Is Stock now trying to exclude disabled women from society along with trans and gender non-conforming women? For a feminist she seems very committed to the "male gaze."

Anyone who has had to navigate NHS neuro/physio services as a young person will know how bad it is (poor practice, bad diagnostics, not enough doctors, general prejudice against young/women). It’s not a surprise that more yng people are visibly disabled as a result - and it’s not in their head

I really do wish that it was the case, however considering how many of the examples of young people speaking about disability and visibility are non binary or transmasc im about 90% sure i know who that sack of bones is referring to when she says “females” so, i guess shes trying the other flavor.

i have a permanent physical disability as a result of being hit by a car and some people just can't seem to fit that idea into their worldview, it's like they want/need me to reassure them that it might get better when i've already gone through the grief of realising it won't it sucks tbh

Catholics are much the same its not one denomination or even one faith. Most modern religions are designed to punish and keep women down

That is exactly what they want. Because deep down, they know that they too could be hit by a car at any time. It is difficult to face the reality that we have no control over sudden, life-altering events like that. I’m sorry you have to deal with people’s denial on top of your disability.

Same boat here. The constant need to reassure others about disability is exhausting. It's much easier when it's "just pain" and you can mask that, but then people don't believe you're disabled because they haven't seen the signs of it, and it can't be that bad if they can't tell you're in pain.

Don't "reassure" When our son was 1yo we transited through an Asian airport My wife's a badass paraplegic Their version of TSA lady asked her Can you walk? No Can you stand? No With a cane? No A walker? No Does anything work? She put her chin on the baby's head and deadpanned: *Some* things work

"Get better soon!" are words that people dish out whenever there's any complaint of illness or injury. Works great for temporary illnesses or injuries but when there's no cure? Not so much.

We built a slightly improved, less ableist society enabling people like me to use mobility devices when they help, not just when we have no choice, and it's a social contagion? No, you just want to shame people into suffering. Same old story.

The ableism is wild. Before my endometriosis surgery people didn't know what was wrong with me so assumed it was all in my head. I would use a cane because standing without anywhere to lean was so painful. I'm sure because I looked young and "healthy" some people thought I was faking

Your story is very much like my daughter’s experience. She’s just had her 3rd laparoscopy for endo. Her cane helps her walk. Hard to understand how her cruelty and inhumanity can be platformed and promoted

I have multiple sclerosis and have had it since I was 28. One stranger actually said "you're too young for that cane, are you need it?"

I hurt my foot like 15 years ago & had to spend 3 months using a cane, & it wss wild how many people would come up to me to tell me "You're too young to use a cane". Like I am sorry, I didn't accidents where reserved only for the old.

who walks around looking at strangers thinking: 'oh yea they're faking something'? Like get a life? Think of other more interesting things? Mind your own business? Listen to a podcast, listen to some music like jfc and I cannot stress this enough get a life and mind your own business.

Social Contagion hmmmmmmm, weird how they keep using the same fear mongering for different marginalized groups. Who else does she hate?

Finally an article that addresses the most pressing issues confronting our society. I hope she is able to find a spare moment at some point to be embarrassed that she can ply a trade from this sort of thing, but these types never have any sense of self-awareness or shame.

For an academic she seems surprisingly lax about providing any data to substantiate her claim that a 'disproportionate number' of young women are using walking sticks. Kathleen has a hunch so it must be true.

I have seen this article circulating all day and was only skimming over the image of it. Ironically I thought the headshot was of an older middle aged out of touch man 😭

I wonder how that group of over 200 academic philosophers from the UK who signed an open letter in support of her “academic freedom” feel today, now that she’s made it abundantly clear what she is. We need a movement to cancel fascists & narcissists

It's just so fucking weird though. These people who hate are so fundamentally broken it seems - no mentally healthy person obsesses over other people's toileting habits to such a pathological level. I cannot wrap my head around it.

People feel sick sometimes and need to feel like they are doing something to feel better especially with people with chronic illnesses. The headline here should read doctors continue to ignore young woman's illness and brush it off as historia.

The frustrating thing about this is that I started using a cane and then a wheelchair well before I met other people like me. I used them because I needed them as my body started falling apart from inflammation and arthritis, and only after I got sick did I meet other people with similar conditions.

I would like to gently push back and note that almost everyone benefits from hiking poles, a truth recognized across history, and that people using them at younger ages can help maintain mobility longer They’re like sunblock: necessary for some bc of specific issues; useful for most, generally.

Why am I not surprised that Kathleen "women who don't woman like I do are bad and wrong." Stock has found another avenue to pursue that down? Guess she hasn't heard that the ableist misogyny grifting market is even more oversaturated than the transmisogyny one if such a thing were possible.

Do we think her next Massively Original (tm) thought will be going after fat women, black/brown women or sex workers? All groups that are seriously under-represented in the 'being abused for not doing femininity properly' stakes after all* *yes I'm aware that at this point I'm abusing sarcasm.

Why are print media paying people to be nasty and unhelpful? Happy to write positive and helpful copy but no one calls. PS wouldn't even put the Times in my cat's litter tray ( maybe that's the problem tbh).

I once read another article about disabled woman (and disabled younger people in general) feeling more confident in using walking sticks and other equipment since it doesn't have the stigma only being used by the elderly. So Stock's being an A+ bully here.

Feministly explaining that young women are stupid liars when they say they are in pain because they won't "tough it out" like a boomer on a self harm bent would.

Feministly explaining that a mass disabling event which is still racking up victims isn't even worth a mention bc young women are just pathetic weak crybabies & besides we've created a hundred styles of brace that go UNDER clothes so no one has to see you being pathetic & weak in public

Hey does anybody remember that WE HAD A PLAGUE. Long Covid disproportionately affects women, is poorly studied, and leaves young people with all kinds of disabilities. May all the "social contagion" people learn what an actual contagion feels like when it attacks their brainstem.

"Social contagion" is a red flag so huge, it could cover an entire city block. I can believe some people being misguided their whole lives, but at this point it seems like this is just the genuine evil of their generation continuing to seep out, like from an infected wound.

the notion that only old people can be disabled has been PLAGUING ME since I was born (with cerebral palsy.) There was an elderly dude where I used to get physical therapy who'd say to EVERYONE under 40, "aren't YOU a little young to be in HERE?" I told him I was born like this but he never stopped

Journalism is dead it’s just opinions from narcissists now. She could start with looking for some evidence why this might be happening. For example, Covid can cause POTS. POTS is a real disease. It makes you dizzy. Hence the need for a stick.

All the things she names in the article can at least be exacerbated by Covid. I have EDS and long covid because connective tissue conditions, which she dismisses as just joint hypermobility, is linked with higher rates of developing Long Covid.

My spine is toast. I've got the MRIs to prove it, I have medically diagnosed (by a PCP and a Cardiologist) mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, POTS/Dysautonomia and EDS (awaiting geneticist to determine varient). I use mobility aids to be mobile

Because if I don't I either get additional injuries, suffer from worse pain, or am functionally bed bound. Mobility aids aid mobility. Disabled isn't a dirty word. I'm (trying) not to be ashamed to live my life as fully as I can, even with my limitations

Also there is something fascinating about her transphobic takes. When she is the most trans-looking person herself. It's like an intense state of cognitive dissonance. And now being an ableist in full force against women.. It's like she's competing in being the most awful human in all disciplines.

Regardless of anyone's need or desire to use an assisstive device, maybe more young women are using walking sticks to fend off roving bands of TERFs interested in impromptu genital checks?

I was just thinking this myself. Women of all ages should beat people with sticks routinely, and this should be legal until we have an in practice equality of protection under the law for women. Then we can CONSIDER fewer stick beatings. Probably should maintain it legally for traditions' sake.
