In 2016, while Pizzagate was taking off, I felt like I was losing my mind because I and EVERYBODY ELSE IN NYC KNEW that Trump and Epstein were best friends and nobody seemed to care. Epstein didn't become a US household word until the Miami Herald piece about his amazing plea deal in 2018.

darth™️@darthbluesky.bsky.social

it is odd in retrospect how easy it was for the “but trump ended his friendship with epstein” narrative to be accepted as fact

You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

One cool thing about being a regular Dem donor is how the party tries to demoralize me before every election. I am again drowning in spam texts clearly aimed at ripping off the elderly. Several Senate candidates have worked hard, overcoming my many "stop" replies and blocks, to make me hate them.

I can think of one other reason that makes sense.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

I can't stress enough how counterproductive it is for campaign sites to hit visitors with a donation pop-up they have to close before they can see anything. A week out, most visits to these pages are voters trying to make up their minds.

If we could have had a second election in November 2024 and asked everyone “are you REALLY sure you want to do that?” maybe we wouldn’t be here lmao

“Shadow docket” is the sort of name you’d come up with if you were writing an authoritarian dystopia.

Riki Wilchins@rikiwilchins.bsky.social

For the 1st time in US history SCOTUS has more rulings on its shadow docket -- unsigned and with no opinions -- than it has cases where it has heard oral arguments and issued signed rulings. IOW they are hiding their deliberations while stealing our democracy. www.propublica.org/article/supr...

Yeah, what the well-heeled pundits are missing — which is wild, because it's been a decade! — is that the kitschiness is the point. Fascists LOVE kitsch. I wrote about this in 2019. Bad, corny taste is how they reassure themselves they are the herrenvolk. www.salon.com/2019/12/25/h...

A serial rapist was elected twice as President, a fact we don't reckon with nearly enough. Now one of two major political parties has been molded in his image, run for and by violent sexual abusers who hate women.

Yes, making the richest people in the world even richer at the cost of human knowledge, skill, and labor is the dream of all working class people everywhere. We were put on this earth to give our bodies, minds, and soul to the technologists to devour and sell it back to us. That’s liberation.

I've lived long enough to watch "the center" move so far right that the GOP can now enthusiastically embrace racism, bigotry, white supremacy, dictatorship, rape, kidnapping and pedophilia and win national elections on that platform.

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.
