Do you know of studies that actually evaluate use of LLMs in the public sector or other kinds of knowledge work? Teknologirådet in Norway just published a report evaluating their own use of LLMs, based on careful logs from 35 cases. teknologiradet.no/publication/...

I want to know exactly how popes write their encyclicals. Do you think Pope Leo is actually a scholar who has simply read a lot of digital media studies/STS/digital culture scholarship? Or does the Vatican hire scholars? Are such jobs posted to Euraxess? Or is the Vatican full of priestly scholars?

Jill Walker Rettberg@jilltxt.bsky.social

It was quite surprising to read the Pope’s encyclical and find it is basically an STS or media studies textbook.

The paper is out! Please read it for hilarious examples of how untrustworthy AI-generated podcasts are and how everything is translated to a standardised white Americanness, and for a discussion of how customised podcasts threaten the public sphere. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Here’s a video from the same podcast as linked in my previous post where you can hear the audio too. I love this because it really lays bare how LLMs fool us - but really they’re just slotting words into linguistic patterns that we’re familiar with. Genres like a podcast or LinkedIn post.

New dataset published: this is the audio + transcripts of AI-generated podcasts using NotebookLM to analyse how it "translated" source documents from different times and cultures. My favourites are the 20 podcasts generated from an empty PDF. The paper about it is in press. doi.org/10.18710/RNT...

In a time without an academic job market in many fields, publishing is not really a push-factor anymore to get a permanent position within the humanities. This is not a hot take, we are simply too many publishing (great) stuff, and there are no jobs. There are no jobs. That’s about it.

Trodde dette var spøk men nei. Nasjonalarkivet byttet ut nettsiden sin med KI. Som ikke akkurat gjør en særlig god jobb med å hjelpe en bruker som vil vite hva sidene egentlig er for noe.

Anine Hartmann@aninehartmann.bsky.social

Nasjonalarkivet har forkastet hele forsiden av nettsiden sin til fordel for et KI-tekstfelt? Har dette kanskje gått litt for langt nå?

We need a moratorium on the following depictions of AI: gleaming white robots, floating blue holographic brains, glowing amber lines connecting a dark globe, Lawnmower Man style 1990s computer graphics, semitransparent screens floating in the air showing vector art faces, robot & human handshakes

Gaming doesn’t count as screen time. Gaming is books. Unless it’s on your phone - that is screen time. Movies are books unless they are Marvel, who produce screen time. Television is screen time.

At noe er basert på en tidligere tekt betyr jo ikke at det ikke har blitt brukt språkmodeller? Å skrive et debattinnlegg basert på en eksisterende tekst er en ekstremt enkel oppgave for ChatGPT.

TechCrunch writes that OpenAI will charge $20,000 a month for access to an AI agent that can do “PhD level research”. Maybe all the PhDs and postdocs recently fired by DOGE should band together and sell their services as “AI agents” - apparently some people will pay more for robots than people.

"This much destabilization of reality is unhealthy" is a warning I take pretty seriously from this source.

Jeff VanderMeer@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social

Destabilization of reality in the US is about to reach surreal heights. Protect your mind. Monitor stress levels. Do not doomscroll--it does not help. Be selective about when and how long you expose your brain to this. Do what you can when you can.

as a result of an extended hyperfocus tunnel last year, scent has become a source of joy for me. today is accompanied by seaside roses - bright red rose, a salty breeze, mineraly earth and dewy green leaves. #sotd
