stuff like this is why one important avenue for court reform is just nixing the shadow docket altogether and forcing these people to explain themselves to the public when they issue orders. also, making their records property of the united states and subject to publication when they leave the bench.

Alex Aronson@alexaronson.bsky.social

Amy Coney Barrett just told Congress that it would be inappropriate to explain the reasoning behind the Court’s unreasoned shadow docket orders. As if unreasoned judicial orders are a thing. They are not. The reasoning is the whole point.

How is it not Illigeal to raise the mortality rate of a hospital 11%?

Ronan Farrow@ronanfarrow.bsky.social

Private equity is buying America's hospitals and nursing homes. The playbook: pile on debt, sell the building, cut staff. The result, one landmark study found: patient deaths up about 11%. #news #information #privateequity

I’m not blaming the Squad for anything that’s happening in Gaza, no. I’m blaming the Squad for clearly getting caught up in a foreign intelligence operation and using their massive platforms to further divide the Democratic Party before the most important election of our lives.

@mta.info decided to unveil a new subway map on World Autism Day and I have never felt more seen.

A new subway diagram has arrived! MTA leadership (including MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara) unveiled a reimagined subway map, its first new design in half a century. Check out the new map on digital screens in stations, and as it rolls out on train cars 🚇

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

there is absolutely nothing standing in the way of more moderate democrats being aggressive opponents of the white house and holding public events highlighting their opposition

@aoc.bsky.social and @sanders.senate.gov's rallies have been so successful that it's "worrying some moderate Democrats who fear Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez could tug the party to the left." www.politico.com/news/2025/03...

No human system is human-proof. It's scary that there is no perfect organization of society that keeps everyone in line. The solution is actually democratic, asking how are our systems meeting the needs of the people, and doing something when they don't.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

Great idea but I think this will be as likely as Disney releasing the Original Theatrical cut of Star Wars. 💔

had a thought that if apple were to release a traditional ipod it would sell like hotcakes

I know the material reasons for the rise of fascism. I also think another reason - which doesn’t get talked about as much because it’s embarrassing that humans can be that naive - is that when you are financially comfortable but bored, abstract cruelty can give you a sense of purpose.

The intensity of the fascist takeover is going to take a toll. Remember to: 1. Rest 2. Take breaks from social media and reading the news 3. Invest time in community 4. Go outside 5. Drink water, eat healthy, sleep as well as you can 6. Ask for help and support when you need it

I think the big political lesson from the Trump Era really is. Everyone's choices matters. You have more power than you think. Progressivism isn't dead, it's gonna change. You can help make a stronger more loving world. Don't ever wait for permission to do something. Go do your thing.

Make U.S. citizens say it out loud: "I have to pay an extraordinary sum of money just to stay alive." When you make them say it out loud that way, watch their face turn red with embarrassment. *** And 1/2 of all U.S. adults don’t even have the cash to cover an unexpected $500 health care bill.

In a way it makes sense. A society which thinks that degrading biological complexity (like an old growth forest or an ocean full of fish) and calling the process "wealth creation" might call extracting and reprocessing content from texts and artworks "intelligence."

It's really funny how a lot of people are like "Who is Robbie Williams, why should I care about his biopic?" It shows how America's cultural dominance really warps us as an audience, we can't imagine someone can be a mega-star unless they are big here. I think that makes us less curious.

Learning "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when it comes to neurodivergence" helped reframe a lot of painful childhood memories. Many of those moments were "an anxious auadhd person who can't self regulate, needing to regulate me to feel okay." I found empathy among the hurt and fear.

I have had close friends who are pastors, I have heard heart-breaking stories about the how alienating and stressful their work was, even though it was also their calling. I wish congregations and denominational bodies took this more seriously.

The Left is only gonna get stronger by embracing communities of faith. Religion can and should exist alongside progressive and democratic civic values. One of the biggest mistakes Democrats made in the past half-century was cede the religious and moral narrative to Republicans.
