Kicking off my Divorced Guy Era with a quick bike trip from The Battery, NYC, up the Hudson Valley to maybe Poughkeepsie. That’s if I can manage ~100 mi in this crazy heat. We’ll see!

Back in New York. Now THIS is a train station ~6 mi from Grand Central to the Battery makes it ~130-135 for the weekend (can’t be sure bc my app died a couple times, and I took some detours)

Unironically, hooray for America. The Hudson Valley is gorgeous. This is one bit they haven’t managed to fuck up yet Look at the view from the Poughkeepsie train station

The train is taking me and Rex back to New York. Harry Nilsson on the earbuds — Nobody Cares About the Railroad Anymore… I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City

From Brewster the trail runs on the North side of the mountain ridge and climbs ~350 ft (450 to 800) over ~10 miles. Then it’s all downhill to Poughkeepsie My legs are feeling pretty weak — I’ve done about 80 miles in the past 18 hours. Scenery’s nice tho

Made it to Poughkeepsie just in time for the skies to open up like Noah’s Flood again. Crazy that both ends of my trip were bookended by Biblical weather I took shelter in the sushi restaurant for some protein and rice and a beer. Job well done

I was too tired to post updates yesterday but the Empire State Trail ruled. Nice and smooth, great scenery, mostly shady, not too many hard climbs. I did another 50-60 mi and made it to Poughkeepsie by sundown

This bit outside Carmel was nice. I gained about 700 ft elevation yesterday. The first section today sheds about 300 ft as it follows the mountains East to Brewster. Then the trail turns back North/West and starts climbing again

Made my way north out of the city and up the trail to Mahopac late last night. The historic (derogatory) Mahopac Motor Inn gave me shelter for the night, but no hot water grrr

Mere seconds after setting out on the Empire State Trail the skies opened up with the wrath of God — pelting rain, wind threatening to blow me off my bike. At least I’m not hot anymore!

Got my new helmet and kit bag just in time for my weekend jaunt from The Battery, NYC up the Hudson Valley to Poughkeepsie

I was feeling all sour grapes about this championship — Philly fan, you know? — but goddamn congrats to the Knicks and the city of New York. What a historic win.

I could tell you a Sturges series gives you a shockingly high number of the best, funniest movies ever. I could tell you how much I, personally, would LOVE a Sturges win. But really: Wes Anderson would be so annoyed to learn he had beaten Preston Sturges in a poll? Do it for Wes. Vote Sturges!

Today in BC March Madness, we have a battle between suprelatives. You can support either The Royal Tenenbaums or The Great McGinty. It's Wes Anderson (1) vs Preston Sturges (7). Vote here: blankcheckpod.com/march-madness

AOC’s biggest problem if she runs for president is that the white men who control our media ecosystem will not so much put a finger on the scale to stop her as an entire hand it can be done (see: Zohran) but it’s going to be blatant and it’s going to be infuriating

Have you ever once seen the New York Times quote Trump like this?

we're getting all the downsides of cyberpunk (social alienation, ruthless hyper capitalism, digital mass surveillance state) but none of the promised upsides (cheap street food, cool jackets, super drugs that make you really fast and strong before they kill you)

London is fast becoming a cycling city. As each new piece in the network appears—which has more than quadrupled from 90 to 431 km since 2016—so do new cyclists. Its infrastructure now sees a stunning 1.5 million daily users—a 43% spike since 2019—moving nearly half as many people as the Tube below.🧵

Isiah Kiner-Falefa lost the World Series by: -entering as a pinch runner but being too slow to score from 3rd on a bobbled grounder -sliding into home when running over the plate would’ve been faster -being such a crappy hitter his manager asked him to bunt the tying run from 2nd to 3rd with 0 outs
