Just had the sinking realization that there are people on at least one of my basketball message boards who are using LLMs to draft their posts. It didn’t really register until I noticed them parroting an LLM’s apology structure when responding to criticisms of their posts.

It's fall, which means it's bioimage analysis conference season! @erinweisbart.bsky.social and @bethcimini.bsky.social had SUCH fun at the @bioimagingna.bsky.social/I2K #I2kxBINA2026meeting last month. We HAD to take advantage of being in person together to film on-site with our friends! (1/2)

Ask Erin / Dear Beth@askerindearbeth.bsky.social

Image corrections might not be the answer to EVERYTHING, but in Ep 42, we discuss how they might be the answer to "improving your measurements enough to measure the thing you care about". @bethcimini.bsky.social and @erinweisbart.bsky.social discuss what, when, and why!

see I've tried using AI for coding I'd like to think I'm special and immune to AI addiction, but the reality is probably just that I'm incapable of feeling any kind of attachment or pride in AI generated code I feel like it pollutes the project and displaces my own motivation, I just don't want it

📝 One of my arguments against putting icons in every menu item was: “Apple doesn’t do it!” Then they started doing it. Now they’ve stopped doing it. Now I can say, ‘Even Apple tried doing it, and now they say “Don’t”.’ What more could I wish for? blog.jim-nielsen.com/2026/icons-i...

blog.jim-nielsen.comNo More Icons In Every Menu By DefaultHave you heard the good news? I bemoaned the approach of putting an icon in every menu item by default which shipped with macOS Tahoe — but now it’s gone in…

I endorse this message.

Grant peer review costs a lot: ~$40k per application in reviewer time, with proposals reviewed again and again. In @thetransmitter.bsky.social , I propose a partial lottery: reviewers decide pass/fail, chance picks among the passes, and "unmissable" ideas and ECRs get protected routes.

The flies arrived in Cambridge this morning—healthy and happy! So nice to see another successful shipment! And great to draw one of our all-time-best customers out of retirement long enough to recreate our first order! Here’s to another 40 years of the BDSC helping to make fly genetics happen!

40 years ago today, the BDSC made its 1st shipment. To celebrate, Trudy Kaufman, who packed the 1st shipment, boxed up the same kinds of flies for John Roote at Cambridge, who placed the 1st order. Watch for pics of the arrival next week. We’ve shipped 4,882,378 vials total. That’s a lot of flies!

[1/4] I joined the @subvert.fm co-op earlier this year before it went live. This is the cute little zine package I was sent. I decided to boycott Bandcamp purchasing when Subvert launched, so I will no longer buy any music (or merch) from Bandcamp for as long as Subvert remains a viable alternative.

this week I learned that during a merge conflict, you can get a list of all commits involved in the conflict that touched a file with: $ git log --merge FILENAME Seems super useful if there are a lot of commits being merged (like in a big rebase) but only a couple of them touched that file

Nothing makes me want to move permanently to the woods more than receiving endless 10-paragraph e-mails made entirely of sentences like "You have built a framework that is both intimately grounded in your own research and universally applicable."

Great thread. Dripping with sarcasm, but still manages to heartily celebrate the importance of human contribution and connection in (specifically game development but generally) any creative endeavour.

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

Juan Nunez-Iglesias reposted

sometimes it feels like a lot of normal people conceptualize an "artist" as a superposition of both A. a super wealthy fine art elite who does low effort abstract art nobody understands B. someone magically born with the art talent gene even though A is 0.000001% of artists and B is not a thing

Or when they crank the prices up. I got into a fight with someone on linkedin saying basically “animators have enjoyed their cushy existence for too long and now they are scared about ai” i was like ah yes the famously stable life of the illustrious animator
