challenging to phrase this exactly right because it'd be in bad taste to use this as a gotcha against all his supporters, but the journalists who very explicitly framed Platner as a rejection of stuff like "HR Lady Politics" or (ugh) "smoothgroins" should take a long, hard, look in the mirror today

not a real yankee fan unless you once thought you hated john sterling and then eventually realized you loved john sterling

The Athletic@theathletic.com

John Sterling, whose tenure as the Yankees’ radio voice spanned more than three decades and five World Series wins, died Monday at the age of 87. Sterling spent 36 years as the Yankees’ play-by-play announcer, calling 5,060 consecutive games. www.nytimes.com/athletic/602...

This story felt like nonsense when I read it last week and thankfully Mike did the hard work of tearing it to shreds

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Did you hear the story of the one man $1.8 billion business built by AI as portrayed in the @nytimes.com? Turns out basically every aspect of that story is bullshit and the story should be retracted.

Is there a way to turn off Gmail's "underline nearly everything in purple because we think AI can rewrite it better" feature without losing the automatic sort-emails-into-categories functionality?

It's maddening, I've turned off ALL the AI stuff, all the spell checking and grammar checking... and it STILL underlines every other sentence in purple so that the AI can "help me rewrite it"

Terrific piece reinforcing that you really should not believe anything a chatbot tells you

Thomas Germain@thomasgermain.bsky.social

I got a tip that all over the world, people are using a dead-simple hack to manipulate AI behavior. It turns out changing what AI tells other people can be as easy as writing a blog post *on your own website* I didn’t believe it, so I decided to test it myself www.bbc.com/future/artic...

I've used Gmail basically since it started and never thought about switching until the heavy AI push. The Gemini summaries drive me nuts. I just want to write and read emails.

Thread of some services/software I'm using instead of various billionaire-owned surveillance/fascist/"A.i." trash products: For my newsletters, @buttondown.com. Does the job! Great customer service - usually get personalized responses within 24 hours. (Never gonna join Substack.)

My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

From the Epstein files: were Paul Volker and Tom Brokaw really members of a secret society with a "no minorities or women allowed" rule? Brokaw is still around -- worth asking him!

I know it’s not the same, but Judge “only” gets $40mil per year. Tucker is getting *$60mil* a year, just completely nuts

Roger Cormier@themetsnewsletter.com

Kyle Tucker's deal with the Dodgers is for 4 yrs/$240 million, sources tell Jesse Rogers

This is on my Christmas list this year and can already tell it’s gonna be a poignant rewatch. Basically a perfect comedy.

watching the new criterion 4k of THIS IS SPINAL TAP. haven't seen this movie in a decade but I did watch it basically every week as a teenager and I still remember every single line

Shocked by the awful death of Rob Reiner. I spoke with him for over an hour last night. We talked about his work and his plans for the future. I always enjoyed his company. We met at his Dad's in 1975. Last thing he said to me was "See you next year.." Such a terrible end. Such a sweet man.

Wrote about how the late, great Rob Reiner had the most impossible 7-movie beginning to any director's career, and yet that's not even what he was most famous for:

whatsalanwatching.comRob Reiner was a master who didn't care if you noticedA tribute to the late, great 'All in the Family' star and director of movie classics like 'This Is Spinal Tap' and 'The Princess Bride'
Alan Sepinwall@sepinwall.bsky.social

Rob Reiner's first seven films: 1. Spinal Tap. 2. The Sure Thing. 3. Stand By Me. 4. THE PRINCESS BRIDE. 5. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. 6. Misery 7. A Few Good Men. Good lord. Even Spielberg included 1941 in his first seven. And that was after playing Michael Stivic. I hope this news isn't true. But...

This Is Spinal Tap is somehow even better than its reputation. There are all the famous scenes everyone knows, then you rewatch it and there are just tons of other ridiculously funny scenes/lines, it's nonstop.

Directing comedy is so, so difficult and under-appreciated and Rob Reiner played every moment so perfectly in Spinal Tap. There are hundreds of ways to shoot this joke and the tiny stonehenge slowly floating down next to Nigel's head is just sublime.
