Fire is great. We couldn't have built civilization without it. Capitalism is great. We couldn't have built civilization without it. but free market capitalism isn't the solution to everything, just like we don't light everything on fire just because it burns.

After a three-year hiatus, Netflix’s French heist series Lupin returns for Part 4 with a soap opera bent, and it’s all the better for it. https://bit.ly/4yKxeXy

I love that the qualifications include “A favorite bookstore, and a current library card.” I look forward to pitching whoever gets this :)

Why is “congrats! your software updated without you asking, so now your core workflows are now very, very broken. Aren’t you grateful?” such a routine event these days? And why dont developers and vendors care? Ugh. (Anyway. Rhetorical questions. No reply needed.)

Three more days in Texas as well! I'll keep including 2022 ofc but I don't think it's a particularly helpful baseline right now, bc if turnout followed the 2022 path, every single one of these counties would exceed 2024's total turnout

Why no Democratic politicians are screaming about this is beyond me! Hope I'm just missing it.

Just a reminder that Trump is intent on punishing Comey because Comey is the guy who stopped him from paying off his quid pro quo to Russia and collecting all his "deals." And all the "deals" are happening right now, and no one connects it to 2016's sell-out of the century.

Freaking love this film and the shows that came from it

Roland Emmerich's Stargate was released 32 years ago today. This film spawned an entire TV universe, from 1997 to 2011, and several TV series projects have been proposed in recent months, but none have convinced Amazon's executives... for now.

Busses, bike lanes, and public transport?

There was exactly one poll [down-ballot, outside of a few 'headline' races, there just isn't the same kind of polling] so I know the trend for GA's 3rd is R+5 this year, down from R+18. That's in line with national trends. I still want this suit rack to lose. badly. +5 isn't insurmountable, but

US congresscritter for the GA 3rd congressional district is literally an empty suit with an R next to his name en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_J... and I need this fucking... apparatchik to LOSE. So very badly. there's no pre-election polling so I just don't know. GA 3rd was an R+18 district.

"how in the hell did you end up down there?" I actually grew up here. Not sure why/how/when I caught the Socialism but I did leave suburban hell to go to college and college for me was Tech, which has its campus _in_ Atlanta proper, and managed to stay away for 20 years but now [*sigh*] I'm back

early voting in GA is up from '24 [voters are motivated] but it does very much come down to the people who live in the district. We've been trending ever-so-slightly more blue every election (zoomers replacing boomers) but I still don't know if there are enough physical, actual D votes to tip it.

"maybe the other side stays home" and maybe. but this chunk of GA is about half outer-ATL-suburb/exurb shading into rural and the other half is small-town rural GA counties. It's all very 'Republican' coded. At least some of those R's will have to wake up & vote D for the seat to flip.

Same with math proofs: A math proof is like 100 pages of a very smart person going step-by-excruciating-step to prove something from first principles showing ALL the work. I can't do it but I can see how AI could read every public proof and get a very good grasp of that particular branch of maths

Anthropic is announcing an IPO because they had six good months [after a Super Bowl ad and becoming oddly popular with programmers for writing code] and other than having a good six months of sales, nothing fundamental has changed. Depending on how you feel about AI, that's good. or bad.

Stop it When did we agree that the first few days of a theatrical run decided whether a film was great or not? People watch the vast majority of films for the first time on TV, physical media or now, streaming - the cinema experience is a tiny percent of the impact and lifespan of a film
