Meri@meri.garden

Waiting to hear back after an interview is *rough* 😮‍💨

recommend seeing La bola negra in cinema if u can! sumptuous, expansive, vital, poetic, gripping, tender film. Queers, Spanish civil war, communing with Lorca and other lives lost to fascism. Ty to my gf for taking me on a date 💕

atproto girl… fediverse boy

went to a 'solarpunk' tech meetup last night and told a boy I think he's cute 🤭

all leftists are conscripted to spend their 20s in the eternal war between naive ineffective moralist anarchists vs arrogant authoritarian colonialist communists and everyone who has grown out of that binary is doomed to watch powerlessly

love it when anarchists say this because most "local community" councils irl in places like new england or small rural towns are typically deeply *right wing* and hate immigrants and queer people despite representing a "broad swathe" of the entire population. leftism is supposed to be COSMOPOLITAN.

went to a fundraiser by ppl from Dawei in southern Myanmar, which lost over 50 villages recently to flooding. no intl orgs are collecting funds because it's also a conflict zone. and the junta isn't letting aid orgs in, and turned off the internet 😐 (i can route donations, dm or signal)

DevRel? More like developers’ relations to the means of production, amirite?

Jim Ray@jimray.bsky.team

GM. It’s not that atproto is illegible to devs or even civilians but inscrutable via the systems of power that have taken over the internet. The sin of social media wasn’t technical but aligning with the desires of established power and ours is the long hard work of breaking that alignment.

Where to even begin. Anthropic wants to "apply centuries of human moral wisdom to its models, as rapidly as possible," via crash courses with hand-picked religious thinkers. Why was one of the Jewish representatives an Israeli scholar who's defended autonomous weapons for armies and police?

Roomy was down today because we hit a usage limit on Railway cos of all our new users recently! Sorry about that and thanks for your support! 🩵

There’s something pretty concerning happening if technologists pathologise people feeling threatened by technology. People have very good reasons to feel threatened and it’s our job to create safety (while staying safe ourselves from reactionary abuse). It’s hard

kind of fun agent finding. Roomy's appserver routes materialisation and queries for each space between 8 Bun workers. the distribution across workers is determined by a hash of the space DID mod the number of workers. 8 = 2^3, so the hash % 8 only diverges on the lowest 3 bits of the input.

The (non-cryptographic) hash function we used is FNV-1a which is simple and fast but works by XORing and multiplying, which pushes information from low bits to high bits. This makes the low bits ~linear in the input, and the result was 97% of all write volume being routed to one worker.

The solution is to add a integer finaliser step that biases randomness towards low bits, a solution which came from this blog post. It's still not an even distribution because the space distribution is super spiky but it definitely helps mitigate it if the hash is actually random 😅

So far no labour saving device in the history of humanity has resulted in a long-term increase in leisure time and worker agency.

The thing that worries me most lately is that many people who know that “fascism is bad, actually” have also convinced themselves that AI tools must be eschewed as fake or impure. In a self-reinforcing loop, there is relatively little AI tooling and infra by “fascism is bad” folks.

sustainability doesn't happen overnight obvs! finding my feet rn in a bit of a transition moment. thanks so much for your support last week 🩵

Very quick and dirty Jev test for hiring bias. One resume for a Wall Street job; asked whether the applicant should get a first-round interview. 76 evaluations, changing only the first name. 19 of each: White-associated men/women, Black-associated men/women. console.typesafe.ai/playground?s...

Matt Hodges@matthodges.bsky.social

Somehow Jev has not yet triggered much discussion of cheap, low-latency, general-purpose classification as infrastructure for targeted oppression.

having one of those deep deep deep exhaustion from the injustice of years of precarity possibly leading nowhere days 😮‍💨😭 if anyone has a lead on something to help keep me afloat it would mean a lot! reposts appreciated also x

I'm very grateful to have been entrusted with @erlend.sh's Discourse payout to keep me above water while working on this, and with that narrow $1.5k/month runway I've worked harder than I ever have. That money's run out now, so please know that if you're in a position to support us at all

I'd be very up for contracting work around ATProto or otherwise, feeling really confident in my general abilities after wearing so many hats on Roomy and solving real problems and verifying my work and shipping a lot of features. And really want to keep doing it but also to put food on table 😅

exploring future Roomy appserver architecture - cool to learn this queuing theory model for service utilisation, how wait time blows up hyperbolically even under constant service time which is really unintuitive to me, but it's because of requests arrive at random/Poisson intervals

so you could use this to e.g. set some threshold for service time above which to partition a worker

I'm incredibly proud to be at this point after about a year of saying we will start selling subscriptions: finally, I can honestly say this is software that I love using every day, something that adds value to my life, something I think is worth paying for to make available to your community.

Help fund our lil indie operation! Larger legacy communities on Discord can now pay $30/month to unlock live bridging at scale for the purpose of either safe-keeping or incrementally transitioning their community to Roomy and the atmosphere. should we add a $5/month good-vibes-only supporter plan?

I also feel proud of our incentive structure in this product, keeping core Roomy free and putting paid services in the connective periphery. We’ll need to keep experimenting but I feel optimistic about our approach, which keeps Atmospheric integrations free and central, keeping us on track.

I’m determined to sustain our work making open social software without relying on donations. I also want to do it without accepting conditions that would demand hyperscaling and enshittifying, because I want the world to actually be better, not just for more code to exist.

@meri.garden carried this release on her back, and is presently driving the Roomy product. Every $ of revenue buys more development time for meri to continue her work at a steady cadence.

one of my least favourite leftist trends is people deciding on some moral stance as an individual and then telling people if they disagree they are ‘crossing a picket line’ there’s something so neoliberal about conflating an organised workplace with ~online vibes~

admitting ai is causing the world to "suck" and also choosing to use them is crossing the picket line. it is time for introspection.

I misunderstood HappyView’s Confidential API client to mean it could act as a Confidential OAuth client for apps, and @trezy.codes just went ahead and implemented that anyway, what a legend 🌟
