We can do amazing things After nearly a decade of working on Rubin software, it is a real operating telescope, and I got to tour during the day and stay over last night This thing is a behemoth, and it goes "pssshhhhhhh" every few minutes 24/7 because of huge chillers that keep the camera cool 🔭

Look cars are overrated except for this very specific 1990s minivan I learned to drive on that is still the only vehicle I've ever called my own, ok? Anyway I really need to go to this meetup next year www.theautopian.com/you-meet-the...

theautopian.comYou Meet The Nicest People At The World’s Largest Previa Cruise - The AutopianAutomotive Annie Keller attenda a Toyota Previa cruise and meets a cast of characters who love Toyota's "egg" minivan as much as she does

New plan, all city departments can give parking tickets now, but whichever one issues the most (legit, validated) citations wins and gets to pick a block to permanently pedestrianize in 2027

pwalchtaylor.bsky.social@pwalchtaylor.bsky.social

According to the Seattle Times Seattle can’t enforce parking rules because the police want a slush fund/thing to point to when asked how they are saving money? So why did we move parking enforcement from SDOT back to SPD? Maybe we should rethink that. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

You can't remove debris from Earth orbit, either. I often use an analogy of ocean pollution to explain why orbital space isn't an infinite expanse to forever put things in.

Dr Charlie Gardner@charliejgardner.bsky.social

You can't clean up plastic once it's in the ocean You can't suck up fossil carbon once it's in the atmosphere You can't (quickly) regrow a forest once you've destroyed it Destruction needs to be addressed at source. It makes no sense to just damage everything and try to fix it afterwards

We have vaccines for chicken pox, HPV, RSV, and more! We have some really excellent research grade telescopes on Earth and in space! If you want an e-bike to transport yourself, kids, and/or stuff, you have options! Heat pumps and induction stoves!

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Seattle isn’t losing kids, but SPS is losing enrollment to private schools. Rather than recruit those families back, SPS is engaging in a secretive closure process that will simply cause more families to flee the district. Closing schools doesn’t save money, of course. I explain here:

thebulletinsea.orgIssue 46 – Residents Across Cascadia Mobilize to Stop School ClosuresDespite clear evidence showing school closures don’t save money or improve student learning, districts insist on pursuing them. Seattle could be next.

Happy Friday everybody! See you in (checks notes) 7 weeks for an evening meeting about totally hypothetically maybe MERGING your kid's school with another one nearby-ish! Definitely not CLOSING anything! Let's build community ;) ;) ;)

Beth Day@thebethocracy.bsky.social

Emails out to affected schools about SPS school mergers, meetings happening in December. 4pm on a Friday. This is like CLASSIC SPS. Did someone let Marni make decisions again??? Also the email states “No decisions have been made.” Lolololol who exactly are you kidding here?

I truly don't understand why this driver behavior is accepted as a thing you can do, put your flashers on, just be a minute Bonus points when it's by a school waiting for the kids to let out 😩

SDOT is testing a new type modal filter: two cars parked in the road.

FULLY FUNCTIONAL

“We’ve established that the observatory is fully functional,” said Julie McEnery, #NASARoman senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “The telescope can guide and take exposures, data flows appropriately, and we can slew from one place to another for observations.” 🔭

Finally, a legal place to park an RV Sorry, were you expecting light rail or a bridge that is safe to bike on, or maybe a home you could afford to rent or buy? Best we can do is waterfront luxury car condos

Voters in Washington State said "tax the rich," sir, not "compliment them on their creative plans to export environmental harm to low-Earth orbit" 🔭

Gov. Bob Ferguson@governorferguson.bsky.social

More than half of the satellites in space right now were made here in Washington state. We just had our strongest quarter — maybe ever — for venture capital investment in startups with the space economy as a major driver. Great to be at the Seattle Space Superiority Summit yesterday...

400,000 drivers illegally speeding in just a month on two streets? How can that be true when NextDoor tells me it’s always people walking and biking who break the rules of the road???

Cars because dudes with more money than sense convinced governments to design everything around their product and now most people are stuck having to use it to do anything at all: go to work, get groceries, pick up the kids, and meanwhile they cause harm, injury, and death that people largely ignore

Jeff Greene@jeffgreene.bsky.social

#GenAI: is it more like cars or asbestos? Can we learn how to use it effectively and safely with training and regulation (i.e., like cars) or will we find that there simply is no way to use it safely and therefore spend lots of time, effort, and money ripping it out of places (i.e., asbestos)?

Anyway take the bus, ride a bike, write your own words, show up for your community, but don't pretend countercultural individual choices alone will fix structural flaws built into our environment and lives by folks in power who only care about line go up, car go whoosh, computer make bad guess

Managed a solo round trip LimeGlider trip today, plus several blocks of "walking"! My husband's hiking backpack works for carrying crutches when they're disassembled in half. Was I on time? Absolutely not. But was I able to carry stuff for the fam? Nope. But did we give up and take a car? Heck no 😎

At this point, I think the limiting factors are the mediocre headlights plus lack of a good waterproof walking boot solution. Also miss my mirror. And I can't carry much besides just my crutches, computer, and small purse in the backpack…no groceries, orchestra rehearsal, or kid schlepping just yet.

My in-laws speak in Far Side comics, Star Wars, and Monty Python quotes My mom had many of these…"You dropped your Kleenex" for a loud thump. "Man holding purse" for a road construction flagger sign. "One swell foop." My husband and I decided AF meant "As Foretold" to better converse around kids

OH MY GOSH who at SDOT and/or SPS do we beg and plead to get this at more schools, parks, workplaces, neighborhood curbs, planter strips, everywhere? I don't want EV chargers I want these 🤤

It’s great! Plus, there’s a direct connection between the bike lane and the high school’s new bike storage facility

Stage 2 mostly achieved, but parking it close to my door on non-private property without blocking driveways is… harder than it ought to be. My crutches disassemble into halves pretty easily, but I need to figure out a backpack solution for when I can't bring a 9yo on a non-e-scooter as a sidekick.

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Me: Every time a satellite passes, we have to throw out a portion of the image, and those pixels are lost. The tricky part is actually deciding how wide the gap should be to maximize science and avoid systematic bias. As you can see in Figure 3,

Somehow all these models of our future assume that there is some OTHER group of very highly trained, insightful individuals who function as an underclass that will somehow be satisfied with endlessly reviewing the products of the Real Scientists to make all this work out.

I see the folks wanting free labor to validate their vibe coded data visualization also scraped your email address 🔭

Julianne Dalcanton@dalcantonjd.bsky.social

The Real Scientists of the future are envisioned to be those pushing agentic LLMs to the forefront of rapid knowledge discovery. And then that work is supposed to be tediously verified and translated by who exactly?

Your brain made a map of car routes based on landmarks and familiar destinations. You had to think about your physical location in the world. Now many drivers only listen to the GPS and don't notice anything about their surroundings, it's dangerous and terrifying.

Case in point, I've been asking lots of folks for rides lately (thanks broken heel). I give our address and then I add, our front door faces the alley, look for the Sasquatch mural. Many of them ignore this critical context info and wind up half a block away on a street I can't get to via stairs.

As someone who (usually) cycles a lot, old time car wayfinding is not too different from modern day bike route wayfinding. Which IMO is one reason new cyclists struggle. My brain has 3+ versions of reality overlaid depending on transport mode and/or aerial view: walking, biking, driving, transit.

My kiddo's school had our annual Pizza on the Playground on Friday, and this year we added a Play Street on the School Street! I am still recovering from a broken heel, but I managed to knee scooter there and back to join the fam for Veraci pizza at the best cafe street seats in the neighborhood 🥰

Today my spouse drove me into work and I took the bus home. I would like to offer an insufficient and belated thank you to everyone who has ever pushed for ADA as a minimum standard in (most) public spaces and wonder why the F we don't do a better job with accessibility everywhere. Transit rocks.

This stuff happens daily in my city too and it's a big reason I have a real hard time getting worked up about e-scooter legality and/or helmet use hand-wringing

I love that my kiddo chose the original Wizard of Oz as the movie to watch at her sleepover 9th birthday party but I'm not sure my millennial heart is up for these kiddos' commentary 😅

Today was the third day in a row I came within a yard of a car hitting me while I was walking in a crosswalk, and today was way too close. I realize we have some drivers out there, but I think we need to ban cars until we can figure out what's going on.

It looks like the new cars only have space for 2 bikes that can be parked up on end? Dangit, Amtrak, I want all kinds of bikes on trains

Michael Smith@mesmith35673.bsky.social

Bike racks are located throughout the train total capacity is 18 bikes.

Why did Seattle's former City Traffic Engineer sigh with exasperation in this tweet from 2019? 🧵

When you have optimized your life to bike yourself and your kids everywhere, but you suddenly find yourself with a broken heel, you get to spend an inordinate amount of time asking everyone you have ever met for rides for yourself and family members in their cars AMA
