Great name choice. The last Pope Leo, the 13th, was known as a pope for workers and the poor. In Rerum novarum he emphasized the rights of workers to form unions and earn good wages long before these were mainstream positions in the United States.

He's being disrespectful to veterans in a variety of ways, but the thing that really gets me is Veterans Day started out as "Armistice Day." It was explicitly about peace, never "victory." They were celebrating the fact that the war was over, not that it was won.

The Conservative plan is out and, ooof, is this costing a disaster. There's a whole bunch of phantom revenues booked here, and the GST housing pledge is costed at under $2B. Given their proposed eligibility criteria, it should be more in the 4-6B range.

Because while a zero debt to GDP ratio isn't a particular goal in itself*, and although I accept line graphs don't need to start at zero, I do think that plus a bit of history is helpful in some cases. * Given which I don't see why a constantly declining debt to GDP ratio should be a policy goal.

His book Values has a lot of connection to Catholic social teaching on the economy and now Mr. Carney reveals his inspiration behind his work. At a time when moral leadership is in short supply, Canada has a leader that can step up.

It’s not about saving money. The U.S. doesn’t have a spending problem, a debt problem, or a deficit problem. What we have is a wealth inequality problem—and DOGE is designed to make that real issue way worse. It’s a con. The entire point is to defang government and insulate wealth from democracy.

Piffleswipe Pierre Poilievre gives a master class in how to lose elections: call on Canada’s leading neofascist conflict of interest journalist more than all others for questions at all your pressers, while pretending to have become a moderate. 🤷🏼🤔🤷🏼

There's been lots of talk lately about the "lost decade" in Canada under the Liberal government. It revolves around this chart: Let's dig into it with a quick thread. 🧵

If you’re leading with tax cuts you’ve already lost. Democrats should stand for a functional, responsive government, a generous safety net, and modernized public services. Tax cuts is Reagan bullshit. It’s not what you pay. It’s what you get back.

Do not go to the United States. It is dangerous. Full stop.

Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated

It seems as if half the people in the MAGA/America First movement express open regret that Hitler didn't win World War II - and the other half don't know that if we'd listened to the America First movement of the day, he would have.

Employee Ownership can be an important tool in the fight for Canadian sovereignty. Current policy isn't up to the task. Michael Ras and my take in today's @calgaryherald.com. It's time to move this issue into the front and centre of the Canadian economic agenda. calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...

The scale of corruption being perpetrated right now is almost beyond the limits of imagination. This is just one example, almost certainly not the greatest.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is headlining an event in Florida this month with ghoulish right-wing social media personality Ben Shapiro, who recently tweeted at PM Trudeau that “When we take Canada, you will be expelled to Panama to work the canal.”

On March 27, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will be speaking alongside Ben Shapiro at PragerU’s east coast gala.

This commentator has it right. We are seeing an ideological agenda a la Ayn Rand and funded by the likes of the Koch brothers. Don’t think it’s not coming to Canada. Poillievre is influenced by the same ideology and our extreme right wing think tanks who taught him are funded by the same money.

Rieckhoff: And what I would tell folks is: if they treat veterans like this, if they treat retired generals like this, how do you think they're going to treat everyone else? How do you think they're going to treat you? We are just first.

Musk states "the fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy". Charles Darwin, who actually researched this stuff, showed it was empathy, specifically, that enabled humanity to flourish.

This is the right message; similar to what Premier Ford said in a US interview earlier today. The self-induced pain of the US tariffs will have a large effect on many sectors in the US and Americans should know about it.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Freeland: "If these tariffs are put in place, it is going to hurt Americans ... your grocery prices are gonna go up, bc you know what you need to grow food in the US? You need fertilizer. 80% of it comes from Canada and you're gonna be a 25% tax on it? ... the WSJ is right. This is dumb."
