The only open question is how high temperatures climb before humanity manages to drag them back down. A new UN report lays out what “minimum damage” actually requires. The report was prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). It introduces a “lowest possible” 1.5°C overshoot scenario as its new benchmark. Under this best-case picture, peak warming around mid-century would be held to 1.7–1.8°C. There would be roughly a 50% chance of temperatures returning to at or below 1.5°C by 2100. Cuts we are nowhere near making To land on this pathway, global greenhouse gas emissions would have to fall 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035, and 69% by 2040, all relative to 2025 levels. The nationally determined contributions that countries have actually submitted would deliver perhaps 5–8% by 2030 and 11–15% by 2035.
