We don’t talk enough about how morally depraved the tech industry turned out to be. Every single ounce of their self-regarding statements of values was an outright lie.

mj-interpretations.bsky.social reposted

My experience of AI is seeing stories such as this one and crying out, quite literally, "oh no god no," and then sobbing. What are we doing? Why is this not stirring moral outrage? These tools fuel delusions and suicidal ideation and we are just going to...watch it keep happening?

The AI economy has become a grifter economy, with dodginess and chicanery at every level, where CEOs lie, and their lies are solidified into plausible-looking analyslop. And the institutions that should be challenging them are nowhere to be seen. www.wheresyoured.at/on-nvidia-an...

This is an important thing to understand about the behavior that gets described as "AI psychosis"; people are using tools they were told would be helpful or useful, but the companies run by folks with the most experience in the world at manipulating billions of users have designed an addictive app.

for folks who are active on x, threads, etc and feel bad about it bc of its stewards but have a hard time letting go: sometimes your behaviors overpower your values online because tech companies hire psychologists & sociologists to come up with ways to put you in that position

One of the things that's most frustrating about the hype cycle around OpenClaw is that so much of what people are excited about is just... software? You can automate doing lots of cool stuff with your inbox with deterministic software that's been around for decades, and it won't delete your inbox!

“Human beings have evolved to learn from each other in the context of our relationships. This is the superpower of our species, and the kids who’ve grown up in the past 20 years are increasingly disgusted by what tech has done to them personally, and society more broadly.”

Important and comprehensive story here regarding Google's new hijacking, er I mean partnership, with ISTE+ACSA to purportedly train every teacher and higher ed facult in the US to be "AI ready." I am quoted at some length, and I bet you can predict how I feel.

'Briggs and his Goldman Sachs colleagues recently said that investment spending on AI made “basically zero” difference in U.S. economic growth last year.' You don't say.

A lede today in WaPo: "Massive investment in AI contributed “basically zero” to U.S. economic growth last year, Goldman Sachs has calculated." Hype distorts people's minds. FOMO can drive stupid behavior. FOBAWTPALSL even more so. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Many are appropriately outraged by Altman’s comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to “training” an AI model. This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine. 🧵/

SAM ALTMAN: “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”

1/5 I am getting more and more emails from individuals directly to me expressing fear for their children from possibly physical actions from AI. They mention that my views seem balanced and ask me to respond to their words. The attached four skeets are a response to one such that I wrote today.

Interesting and erudite essay exploring the varied medieval forms of learning through dialogue and using that lens to explore AI. (Of course human interlocutors have minds and AI tools do not, that always should be remembered as well.)

I've written a short comment regarding this new MIT study that is being passed around and why it is horseshit. "11.7% of US workforce is being replaced by AI" my ass. Thought that might be of interest. Also - thanks for all your work, you are one of the best resources out there.

What an unsurprising decision by corporations that desperately need to make money with AI. If every other company with a chatbot isn't already doing this, then expect them to be following Meta's lead soon. The chatbot is not your friend; it's a corporate listening device. www.ft.com/content/22f7...

One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

You are up to date.
