"Men are disturbed not by events, but by the view that they take of them" Epictetus

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

I have one. Voters make decisions based on the ideas in their heads and their beliefs about the world, and those ideas and beliefs are heavily shaped by their social interactions, especially media consumption, and in the last 20 years most media consumption is from social media's sea of lies.

"A farmer doesn't like a handout" ... speaking from the most heavily subsidized industry ever

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

Tennessee farmer's fuel bill was $20,000 for just 2 weeks: "I wish they could see what it costs us to plant a crop and what we are getting paid... A farmer doesn't like a handout. He would rather have a fair market."

It's more than that, though... Even on a purely strategy-brained level, one would be better served by understanding the ways in which global interconnection of electoral and ideological goals are linked and interdependent

The creation and defining of the political "Nation," and the binding of it to the State as the sole basis of legitimacy was as arbitrary and contingent a choice in political and social history as any other And it is just as subject to revision by outside forces and changes

The fact that voters in Alabama and Michigan feel there might be consequences for them from the outcomes in São Paolo and Minas Gerais is reflective of the fact that the nature of global communications has made that a legitimate concern

Writers and thinkers have been saying for literal decades how the Internet was challenging previously dominant forms, patterns, and boundaries of identity (Manuel Castells!), and in the rewriting and expansion of a sense of political affinity outside of national borders, we see precisely that

"We want to govern from right of center, but need the excuse that we were compelled into it by the opposition rather than went there out of preference"

I have been baffled for years as to why tech keeps trying to push "Personal Assistant" applications of whatever they're building, and I have to conclude it must simply be because the executives themselves are entirely incapable of managing their own lives and therefore conclude we all are, too

It’s hard to decide what part of this story on Marissa Mayer’s new startup is most loathsome, but this “women need a wife or, in other words, a digital servant” construction makes me want to flip over an actual table www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/s...

... or indeed any political history anywhere, ever. There were good reasons US companies long resisted affiliating themselves this explicitly and ideologically with one party (and one political figure!)... it's a highly "politically leveraged" position with massive risk exposure

Quinta Jurecic@qjurecic.bsky.social

if only there had been a way to predict this might happen based on nearly every midterm election cycle in modern american political history

Lula the Rula

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

Everyone thought Lula was cooked, hopeless. Then he bought a phone and started posting and now he's gonna get a 4th term. The lesson is to never stop posting.

I don't know, man... I like Alex Gibney and I hate Musk, but even those facts were never going to be enough to motivate me to sit through four hours about the guy I already dislike him the maximum I can. I'd really rather not spend that much more time thinking about him Perhaps this was common

Lady on the subway this morning at 0830 drinking a White Claw... Finished it, crushed the can by hand, put it in her handbag, and immediately pulled out... Another White Claw Absolutely killing it

I did not realize these were unclear

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

New advanced voice model from Jack Dorsey / Block that is made specifically for conversations. Called Dessa. Pretty spooky if it’s as good as the sample demos they published here. Her, the movie, has arrived? block.xyz/dessa

In truth, so much ... but of course some of the most obvious places to start are in air quality, not just from improvements in industrial pollution, but in the effective *banishment* of smoking from public and even private spaces

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Retrospectively, we are absolutely going to see the 19th and 20th centuries as the AGE OF SMOKE AND SMOG

Peter Marino reposted

My unpopular but persistent belief is that almost everything in our lives has gotten better and we’re weirdly incapable of seeing it.

William Goldman said it years ago about understanding the audience, and it remains true: "Nobody knows anything"

‘COYOTE VS ACME’ has passed ‘SUPERGIRL’ to become the highest-grossing movie produced by Warner Bros this Summer. The film was almost permanently deleted by Warner Bros for a tax write-off.

At this point, I'm convinced that the New York Times must actively attempt to seek out people who have no clue what's going on to use for these focus groups because otherwise it makes no sense

brent 🌹🗽@therealbrent.bsky.social

Is everyone ready to be mad again?

"Yeah, I just don't think I know a lot about what's going on..." SO WHY ARE YOU IN A GROUP EXCLUSIVELY ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW???

I mean, this has been something they wish they could do since they came in. By saying so out loud he merely confirms what anyone with an ounce of observational sense would have known for nearly two years at this point Can they? Would it work? Totally different questions! But they would *LIKE TO*

🚨🚨🚨 Q: Is there any scenario in which DOJ would try to block states from certifying the election? AG TODD BLANCHE: Yes, of course. It is not DOJ's intention to improperly interfere with elections or the state certification process, but ...

I do not begrudge any individual for making such a choice for him or herself, but to do so with the insistence that the US will be ever thus as it is right now strikes me as a deeply myopic presentism The reversion will come

Preemptive? Haven't we been striking them for months?

Shipwreck@shipwreck75.bsky.social

White House sources:   In the past few hours, there has apparently been a change in the American position in favor of a preemptive strike on Iran.

To the extent that Trump ever had a political (rather than media) superpower, it was energizing low-propensity voters, capturing a base inaccessible to anyone else. With his project in tatters, and heading towards the literal grave himself, this power does not pass to anyone - it simply evaporates

JD Vance on the economy: "You don't turn the Titanic around overnight"

It puts me in mind of a party I hosted in 2019, at which one of the attendees was a Food & Beverage manager, and talking about restaurant wages, he pointed out that if restaurant workers were paid what they deserve, the cost of meals would escalate far beyond what Americans would be willing to pay

Peter Marino@mondium.ai

This great and growing nostalgia for mid-tier restaurant takeout food is endlessly baffling to me. Even though it has become more expensive recently, it was ALWAYS more expensive to eat out than it was to prepare food at home, which also had the advantage of being precisely what you wanted

This was before any of the inflation in the underlying input prices we've seen over the last few years, but even then, it was obvious to insiders that the cost of these meals was already so artificially low that it had conditioned the entire population to expect the subsidy as a matter of course

The expression “one-shotted” tells you an immense amount about how Musk sees the relationship between education, knowledge, and belief.

I'm not entirely sure what this "danger" is Even if we concede that the video is "extremely cool shit," which I do not, the maintenance of a moral posture towards the self and the world that white supremacism is repugnant, vile and base is a far more worthy effort than gawking at something "cool"

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

Tbh I don’t know if it’s the media or just the politics around EVs are rancid: 1. Our EV national champion is run by TEMU Albert Speer 2. Republicans think climate change is fake and gay 3. Dems think EV strategy should satisfy a UAW wishlist first

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

I don't think most Americans understand yet what a global laggard the USA is turning into here. Media instead told us that electric vehicles were a fad that didn't work.
