My insurer charged me $60 because it wouldn't OK the mesh used in my hernia surgery. The doctor didn't show me a variety of meshes and I picked the purple one; it was a medical decision. It was just another fine mesh, Ollie. Anyway, that's one reason I support universal healthcare.

#booksky My son was in a used bookstore and the owner told him that 20- and 30-somethings are buying up 1930s and '40s sci-fi and mystery books like crazy because they read them as epubs and mobis and wanted hard copies to keep. I feel better.

A cat stopped by yesterday and demanded food. We gave him ham and cream and water. He left us a dead mouse in the driveway before moving on.

It must be an election year: Kentucky Republicans are trotting out the trans men-playing-women's-sports thing again. No health care. No fuel prices. Hell, no food prices, either. When will Kentuckians wise up?

The hot and wet summer was a paradise for bugs. But it was a gift that keeps on giving, because it also was a paradise for ragweed. I would like to divorce my sinuses.

So measles is killing people again, people who ignored established and well-documented science, threatening themselves and other unvaccinated people. I. Don't. Care.

I have been dealing with gastritis for the last couple of months, and were I to write about it, the book would be called "The Summer Without Tomatoes." It would be warm and folksy but heart-rending, much as if the Waltons met Anna Karenina.

British Golden Age mysteries would have been a lot shorter if they'd had DNA evidence. And Perry Mason TV episodes would have been shorter if they'd had cell phones. #booksky

I hope this gastritis busines ends before tomato season is over. The food of the southern gods is a sandwich made with a fresh tomato, white bread and Miracle Whip. I was a Miracle Whip child who married into a mayonnaise family, but sometimes I return to my roots.

Happy 4th of July to those who appreciate that America is a melting pot of many different flavors, not just angry, uneducated mayonnaise.

We suspect that AI is going to take over the world, but what happens when two AI systems compete for supremacy? Just another tidbit for when you're lying awake at night, worrying.
