If true, lessons for the NDP are fourfold: 1. don't short circuit leadership races. 2. Figure out what the right policy is, and push it through. 3. Make sure you find ways to convincingly tell the story of those changes. 4. Don't make it all about polarizing partisan politics. Voters HATE that.

If there's anything historic about BC's recent election, it's not that a political group, who have changed their name from Social Credit, to Liberal, to United, to a bunch of things, and finally to Conservative, won an election under the name Conservative (a name which they haven't used in a while).

David Eby undermined our democracy in BC by: 1. Calling an unnecessary election, 2. Setting an election date just one week after our province-wide local elections, 3. Calling an election early, when the Conservative party was in disarray. It was the lowest voter turnout in BC history.

This is the map of BC after the 2024 election, which the NDP won. The blue areas signify Conservative wins. This kind of rural-urban divide isn't unusual. It's a real problem in BC Judging by reactions here on Bluesky, apparently the rest of Canada thinks that Vancouver = BC (or something).

And finally, the Conservatives under Doerkson don't appear to be particularly extreme. It's a big tent, so yah, it contains extreme views. Will they be worse than the BC Liberals under Campbell or Clark? They were anti-trans, racist, and anti-indigenous. It was just way more accepted then.

The Conservatives weren't much more inspiring than the NDP. Even they had a huge drop in voters: 49,000 fewer BCers voted conservative than in 2024. Only the Green party made gains in number of voters. These are important things to consider before drawing conclusions about what happened in BC.

Nor is BC particularly left wing. My family moved here 55 years ago. For 33 of the intervening years, right wing parties have formed our government. In BC, Conservatives now = BC Liberals in the early 2000s = Social Credit in the previous century. They just keep changing their name.

NDP voters, in particular, stayed home. 270,000 of them. Emily Lowan, who ran an energetic and positive campaign with real policy, received more total votes in her riding than Doerkson did in his. On election night, Adrian Dix said the snap election was a mistake.

The BC election had the second lowest turnout in Canadian history. Second only to the last Ontario election. This is crisis level apathy and no one seems to care. Our democracy has become a sham. The silence from our politicians is damning. They don't actually want us to vote. #bcpoli #cdnpoli

Sorrow will have its seasons and its reasons, but let us leave a window open for joy. Some days, simply carrying on asks more of us than anyone can see. Keep going gently. The effort matters because the life you are tending is your own.

BC's reputation as "famously progressive" is a myth. NDP control of the province has been brief - before them it was the right wing "BC Liberals" (who were actually conservative) and the far-right Social Credit party. I don't know why people have forgotten that.

We have work to do, BC. The only left of centre left was the Greens. The NDP sold out with a leader who refused to listen to the UBCM, his own people and the people of the province. Dark days are ahead. Plan, organize, fight to protect 2SLGBTQ fam and our Indigenous brothers and sisters. #BCPoli

Be sad and be angry. But then: you need to decide what you love, and what you want to fight for: Climate. Old growth. Health care. Reconciliation. Trans kids. Transit. The arts. Gather your people. Offer your skills. Show up, in person, in your communities. Organize. Find joy in it.

I'm sure many of them will have a story to tell tomorrow about how they were on their way to the venue and saw a person outside. There are people in East Van. Sometimes they are outside. It's very scary for Conservatives.

The province will need the same thing we needed no matter who became Premier tonightโ€”base building, strategic organizing and to realize our collective stake in upholding Indigenous rights. Meantime, weโ€™ll wait and see if the BC NDP learns a lesson or keeps pointing the blame.

The BC Conservatives, an absolute mess of a party full of racists and nuts, might get a commanding majority with 44% of the vote. This will be entirely on the BC NDP and Eby. Entirely. It'll be their fault for not getting rid of FPTP, and for calling an unnecessary election out of pure selfishness.

David Eby is an experienced politician. These ads make the NDP look weak and uninspired. Eby called the election with apparently no plan, no strategy, not even a full slate. I agree, we don't want a conservative government. So why did David Eby campaign like this?

If we "wake up" Sunday morning to a conservative gov in BC, it's on David Eby and the NDP, who could have figured out a way to work with already elected Green Party MLAs while already governing. Eby chose to throw it all away. These ads make the NDP look desperate & scared. Not inspiring.
