Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew told Prime Minister Mark Carney, premiers and First Nations leaders that it's time to abolish the Indian Act. Here's what Kinew said to reporters afterward.

Hardly anyone changes their vote, the mythical "swing voter" is not the key. The key is turning out your base, and "the other guy is worse" is not a big motivator.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

If you believe the tenets of neoliberalism what else can you do? Both parties are trapped by the logic of markets imho, there are differences but the main difference is branding

"The BC Conservatives got 69% of the seats with 48% of the vote. The BC NDP got 29% of the seats with 38% of the vote. The BC Greens got 2% of the seats with 11% of the votes, electing only 2 MLAs to represent their voters."

The BC Conservatives will probably also kill STR regulation, so you can expect all that housing stock to go back to AirBNB, and probably kill transit-oriented development mandates, further restricting supply and pushing rent and real estate even higher

It's always gas prices, affordability, vibes. If you can name a single policy by any party you're in a tiny minority.

Everything is going to get more expensive, nobody knows who is responsible or why, our system is set up to swing back and forth without fundamentally changing anything. Bank of Canada is almost guaranteed to raise rates, Trump will probably restart Iran war.

As always the winner is apathy. The people yearn for a one-party system, except we don't have 1000 years of meritocratic-bureaucratic tradition like China to make it work.

Should note: the scale of a Conservative win might *really* matter given how potentially unstable that coalition is. A close result means individual fringe MLAs have quite a bit of power. A blow-out could give Doerkson the ability to ignore the fringe — depending on the make-up of the elected MLAs.

We are maybe 3 days from breaking the all-time Fremont bike counter record for October, and there's a chance we could break the all-time annual record by Thanksgiving. We are 87K away and are currently recording an average of 3.8K per day. That rate will decline with cold and rain. Need 2.7K/day.

"The cost to refactor 10,000 lines of PHP code with DeepSeek V4 Flash is likely under $0.05, assuming you work file-by-file and keep conversations focused" ok that's kind of wild

You can have billionaires or you can have democracy, but not both.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

Right-wing billionaires now own the Washington Post, the LA Times, CNN, CBS News, virtually every local TV station, virtually every news radio station, most local newspapers, X, Facebook, Threads, and TikTok. (Did I miss any?) They own almost the entire information environment.

NEW: Elon Musk gave his super PAC $76 million in just two weeks of October, and more than half of its new candidate spending went to one race: the Texas Senate fight against James Talarico. He’s now given more than $445 million this cycle, far more than he spent electing Trump.

If you have a Green candidate in your riding and you're thinking about not voting at all, please consider that a lot of people don't even have a Green candidate to vote for. Do it for the rest of us. Saturday Oct 24

Less than a year after rejecting an all-party recommendation for an electoral reform citizen's assembly, David Eby is begging BC Greens to bail out the NDP, while keeping electoral reform off the table. See our write-up on this political cynicism: www.fairvote.ca/19/10/2026/d...

Facebook is sometimes dismissed as a social media platform of yesteryear that young people don't use. But for a decade now, around 70% of US adults have consistently said they use it. That overall figure includes around 7 in 10 of the youngest adults, too. www.pewresearch.org/internet/fac...
