People are less likely to believe conspiracy theories when they get clear, simple, and early information from trusted sources. Using tools like “prebunking” and reaching people where they are (like on social media) can help build trust and reduce misinformation. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Joseph Carens, a poli sci prof at Toronto, said that national borders are like feudalism — if you happen to be born into the manor (ie hold a ‘good’ citizenship) the system seems right and proper to you, but there’s nothing you can say to the serf in the field to justify *their* lack of opportunity,

KTLA - Narciso Barranco, a father to three sons who are all US Marines, pepper-sprayed and punched in the face by alleged federal immigration officers while he was working as a landscaper at an IHOP. He was then forced into the back of an unmarked car in Santa Ana.

This is part of why we need contingency plans. “The NIH isn’t going to fund this research for a while so stop doing it” is extremely short-sighted and harmful. We need people to have more vision than that.
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

The Tr*mp administration’s interference with publishing scientific research/opinions and the appointment of someone with no scientific knowledge or expertise to make public health decisions should remind us all of Lysenko, whose incompetence and pseudoscience led to millions of deaths.

URGENT ACTION FOR NSF GRANTEES. For current & recent (since 2020) awards, archive your award history this afternoon/tonight. Screenshot/download/print your work in research.gov & alert your partners. We have credible threats to integrity of awards tracking systems (via @jeremymberg.bsky.social)
🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov

truly don’t understand why more dems aren’t being as outspoken as AOC when there’s clearly such huge appetite for it. it’s one of those rare times when it’s not just the right thing to do morally and ethically, it’s also super smart politically.
News: AOC had her strongest ever quarter, raising over $9.5m from 266k individual donors for an average of just $21. AOC doesn’t take a dollar from lobbyists or corporate PACS. Our top donor professions are teachers and nurses. 64% were first time contributors.
