Fierce advocate for justice and science. We rapidly approach the intersection of multiple existential crises that will require radical simplification and de-growth ... justice and science are the only ways through.

MINNESOTA — Mom goes outside to warm up her car, ICE grabs her: "Please, my car kids are all alone in the house!” So nothing has changed and Homan was just to put a new face on the cruelty, got it (H/T longtimehistory)

The first holidays and new year without parents and grandparents are hard. It helps me to ponder over generations. What did their world look like? What energy did they use? What changed during their lifetimes? What didn't? Tomorrow I'll reflect on this during Climate Chat. 👇

It's now been 15 days since the Trump Administration was supposed to furnish ALL of the Epstein Files per (H.R. 4405) Epstein Files Transparency Act passed by congress on November 18th of last year. I'm thinking he Invaded Venezuela to distract everyone. Why would that be? Guilt? 🗽

Based on the 11-year running mean (and on Earth's Energy Imbalance), the near-term rate of warming could turn out much higher than the linear 2010-2025 extrapolation. The next El Niño peak will be very informative for the rate of global warming, as @drjamesehansen.bsky.social points out:

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

The real question is not "Why is Bluesky so left-coded," the real question is "Why can't the right exist in a social media environment without algorithmic assistance, where people can ignore them"

Carney: We know that this decades-long process of our ever-closer economic relationship between Canada and the US has ended. And as a consequence of that, many of our strengths have become our vulnerabilities, particularly in those industries that are most tightly integrated with the US….

It’s getting real for Home Depot. The flash mob is only the warm up, the nationwide boycott hits on November 27th. Chant: “Tax the rich tax, the motherf*cking rich.”

“Donald Trump doesn’t believe people should obey the law — he believes people should obey him. He doesn’t care about the law. He doesn’t care about the Constitution. And what he said yesterday is this: if you stand in the way of his corruption, death is your destiny.” — Sen. Chris Murphy

It is not treason or sedition to remind our military to follow the law and their oaths — it is patriotism. That Trump called for the deaths of Democratic officials in response underscores the need for such warnings.

Watch this and suddenly your own problems won’t feel so heavy. The good news: people stepped up and raised about $246 k+ on GoFundMe to help this woman and her baby. There really are good people out there.

This speech is such an extraordinary combination of lies, delusions, narcissism, hatefulness, ignorance and lunacy that it could have been given by no other person than the president of the United States. It could well be the low point of US public diplomacy in our history.

The fact that Matthew Dowd lost his job for pointing out Charlie Kirk’s hate speech, while Brian Kilmeade openly suggests we should euthanize the homeless and there is zero outrage, shows exactly what is terribly wrong with today’s political mainstream media.

Nathan A Leaf reposted

Just watch. The whole system is swinging into action, using Kirk's killing to advance the power & interests of the right. The crucial thing to notice is that *the process wouldn't work without the complicity & assistance of the mainstream elite establishment*. Every time.

For everyone saying political violence has no place in this country… Remember two Democratic legislators were shot in Minnesota just this year. And America shrugged and moved on.

Where are the red Make America Great Again hats out in the fields? You know, the same people who swore immigrants were “taking their jobs.” Keep snatching hard-working folks who are just trying to support their families and don’t be shocked when this becomes the new norm.

Replying to @leonsimons.com

No one should be surprised when a planet that accumulates heat more than twice as fast starts to see temperatures go up more than twice as fast. This isn't rocket science, but we do need more of these NASA satellites. 🌍🛰 To keep us from going blind. bsky.app/profile/leon...

🚨Earth's energy imbalance more than doubled in recent decades🚨 'if surprises lie ahead, for example, from unexpectedly large aerosol forcing (Hansen et al., 2023), or an unexpected loss of climate stability, then the imbalance is the first place this can be detected' doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Two of the most reliable indicators of Earths Energy Imbalance (NASA CERES satellite and Geodetic, ocean heat estimates) show that the near-term forcing increase might be much higher than models suggest.

Look at this graph. The share of national income going to the richest 10 percent was lowest (and share to lower 90 percent highest) when union membership was at its highest. As unions have weakened, inequality has widened. This is why we must build back union power.

The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns. The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate. Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care. The list goes on and on. Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

A couple of months ago, the Navy dishonored civil rights hero Harvey Milk by removing his name from a ship. Now, the Air Force is dishonoring itself by celebrating a domestic terrorist called Ashli Babbitt.

The GOP governors of South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee have all sent their states' National Guard troops to assist Trump's occupation of DC. All four of those states have cities with crime rates higher than DC. This was never about "fighting crime."
