It has been a busy, busy first day of #IrishBookWeek but manged to get bunting in the window, posters hanging, shelf-talkers... talking. That we are both a nation of writers and a nation of readers is definitely worth celebrating🎉📚🎉📚🎉

The constant visuals of happy people enjoying the beach in the sun is really starting to p*** me off!

Ola Løkken Nordrum@olaln.bsky.social

We're being told our planet is on fire. People are dying in the tens of thousands. But yet, the media show us pictures of harmless fun. This visual disconnect is numbing the public to the urgency we face.

Saying that it's "too hard" to get on the Irish president ballot when an independent woman got the entire Irish left to back her, got the biggest vote ever and beat two historically dominant parties is not just wrong - it is breathtakingly offensive and outrageously dishonest. #Aras25 #Speirgorm

SEAGROW has begun! We cannot wait to get started quantifying all the benefits of regenerative ocean farming! @tcddublin.bsky.social

I can relate. People assumed I was a yoga teacher until I told them what I do. Also I’m not immune to mansplaining. “If coverage systematically tilts toward some groups over others, that doesn’t just affect individual careers—it can reinforce stereotypes about who ‘looks like’ a scientist.” 🧪

🤯 Why?!?! Is this the final sentence of this article. “Both Dermot Desmond and Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary have criticised the Metrolink”. It’s completely unrelated. They are not public transport experts. They’re just an ultra polluting billionaires. This is terrible journalism.

The Irish media bear significant responsibility for Ireland's lack of progress. The example below illustrates this clearly. Their deference to climate-denying billionaires like Michael O'Leary is so deeply ingrained that it's often overlooked — but it continues to undermine real progress.

This review clearly shows that macroalgal decomposition rates vary significantly between experimental approaches and are severely underestimated when a refractory pool is not considered, impacting scaled-up estimates of macroalgal carbon export to the deep ocean 🌊🌱

Silence is complicity

Joe Noonan@joenoonan.bsky.social

Journalist Anas Al-Sharif reporting from Gaza, shortly before Israel killed him tonight: “If this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

It absolutely makes sense that men are using AI more and seeing more job benefits, because confidently spouting nonsense in the shape of information (what LLMs are programmed to do) has always been much more of a pathway for career advancement for men than for others.

Mary Gillis@marygillis.bsky.social

Every. Single. Story. about women not using AI as much as men portray it as bad for their future career prospects (without a shred of evidence) and a result of women being fearful little ladies rather than looking at AI's output and saying "this sucks, it's not going to help me."

Yet again, we're seeing horrific reports of the killing of seven children in Gaza this time as they were waiting for water at a distribution site. UNICEF calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, aid at scale and release of hostages.
