“Markets are servants, not masters.” Worth reading @nickhanauer.bsky.social’s new op-ed in @wsj.com on building a pro-market economics that delivers broad-based prosperity, and what today’s economic thinking can learn from FDR’s visionary thinking during the New Deal.

From @nickhanauer.bsky.social in the WSJ: "The golden rule of this new economics is inclusion. The more we include a broad swath of Americans as innovators, entrepreneurs, well-paid workers and robust consumers, the faster the loop spins and the more the economy grows."

As soon as these motherfuckers are gone, we are going to tear all this awful shit down.

Doug Burgum announces the start of construction on the "triumphal arch," despite pending lawsuits, etc. Every DC/VA motorist whose commute will be ruined by this should have standing to sue.

This is bullshit. The festival has always been for older people. It’s too expensive and too logistically challenging for the kiddies. Best part of Burning Man is no drunk college kids to deal with.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Burning Man, which draws tens of thousands of attendees to the Nevada desert in search of spiritual enlightenment, creativity and a disconnection from the outside world, is losing appeal, significantly among people in their 20s, according to attendance numbers released this summer.

The Republican mind is so pathetically easy to manipulate.

As someone who did millions in business in the aftermath of 9/11 to help Cantor rise from the ashes and who also personally hosted Howard to speak at our firm, I can't tell you how disgusted I am by who he has become and how he acts and speaks.

Lutnick: "If you are gonna mess with the United States of America and its economy and you're right adjacent to our northern border, it was really disrespectful. When you treat Donald Trump disrespectfully, he knows it. And that's what happened. It's just sad the way Canada has treated us."

Corporations hate regulation for the same reason robbers hate cops. It makes it harder to steal.

Food companies wanted deregulation. Now there are dozens of recalls across the country. Mining companies wanted deregulation. Now the black lung rate is at a 45-year high. Financial companies wanted deregulation. Now financial losses to fraud are the highest on record. Noticing a pattern?

The “head of strategic futures” at OpenAI just went on an unhinged rant against social security sometimes I feel like these tech companies are actively trying to alienate as many normal people as possible

Honestly, this is just a fucking child’s view of the world. “Send diplomats” no fucking way, damn, that’s crazy, why didn’t anybody think of that before. Minsk II isn’t real and it can’t hurt me

Video of an ICE agent pulling a gun on a wife and mother, who is a US citizen born and raised in the area, near Bailey's Crossroads in Northern Virginia yesterday. Chillingly, they claimed she “almost ran them over” until she told them she had video proving that was a lie.

Beshear needs to do what Mitch would do in his shoes. The law they made to stop Beshear from appointing a replacement violates the state constitution. Make the friggin' appointment!!! Make them prove he's alive or take you to court (which will prove he's not alive).

Mitch McConnell hasn’t been seen or heard from in 25 days in the hospital. Yet he still has a job, still getting paid, and getting unlimited world class healthcare. The man who voted against a living wage, against universal healthcare, and against guaranteed paid leave, is now getting all three.

Grahm Platner is clearly a deeply flawed man. However, his ability to articulate the economic problems ordinary Americans face is second to none. If most democrats sounded like him, there would be about 15 republicans in congress.

Graham Platner is ending his bid for Senate in Maine, leaving behind a powerful grassroots coalition that may or may not be transferable, @elainegodfrey.bsky.social and @russellberman.bsky.social report:

The terror spreading across the country this a.m. because in some more progressive corners of the US progressives won elections is telling. The reason the reaction is so over-large is because progressives unlike centrists and the right, are the only group who pose a real threat to established power.

None of this is written in stone. We have the power to regulate corporations and how technology is used and developed. We forget this too often, to our collective detriment.

We could have had a very different rollout of LLMs than we actually did. It could have focused on building applications that made life easier for everyday use. Limited but useful. Instead, the buildout was focused on a radical and flawed proposition: that it could replace much of human labor.

Great news.
