Press freedom groups have called for better access to European Commission documents for journalists, saying requests are "severely delayed", denied "on questionable grounds" or overly redacted: "public debate is being harmed. Stories which should emerge do not" cpj.org/2026/10/cpj-...
Vučić and Bolsonaro losing is that handy reminder (and my god we need it) that the slide into authoritarianism is not guaranteed and can be fought against and ultimately defeated.
Coming soon: Al Jazeera uncovers disturbing links between British right wing activists, the far right and loyalist paramilitaries.

Donald Trump canceled his scheduled Oct. 16 deposition in his lawsuit against the BBC because of "matters of national importance."
The BBC alerts the judge that those matters were: a rally in Dalton, Ga. and a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago.
Oh yeah that is the problem with the US right now. Not enough moonshine and too few homemade stills blowing up.
Take that Rex Banner, you woke snowflake lib
"There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate." This feels as true today as it was 9 years ago when #DaphneCaruanaGalizia was brutally murdered.
My love & solidarity to her family, everyone who knew her & to everyone fighting for justice.
Justice delayed is justice denied
Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.
this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted
ChatGPT is adding the signatures of real New Yorker cartoonists to its AI-generated images. So far, I've found the signatures of more than 15 contributors.

It’s banned book week and I hope that you support authors of banned books. Creep: Accusations and Confessions was the target of a book ban in Santa Paula, California. I was banned from Long Beach Unified School District property for speaking out against corruption.
The White House is refusing to allow Politico on Air Force One on Monday, which means the news organization cannot fulfill its press corps pool responsibilities. https://cnn.it/3TnDczb
NEW: Remember when John Oliver opened a church to expose how easy it was to get tax exemptions?
This year, ProPublica reporters set out to establish private schools to test if, truly, anyone could open one.
We founded two. Here’s how.
What a "generous" fellow saying that Jane Doe is not the main villain.
Ignoring his bloviating approximation of journalism, let's be clear he doesn't believe her and is trying to undermine her because all he sees is her trying to "self-declare some form of victimisation".
A contemptible man
Michael Tracey published what he said was the ID of the "Jane Doe" in the Cornell case. Then he took it down, claiming he just wanted to make a point and didn't want to see harm to the person he named.
What he hasn't admitted is that he mistook info on a sketchy site for official NY court records.
Film is a medium that has represented a number of genocides, war crimes and tragedies but yes, a Marvel film (owned by Disney) will be one of the darkest movies ever made.
They need to go outside
Perhaps they mean darkest in terms of IP - six dead characters means six merchandising opportunities closed off (cue: A solitary tear rolling down the exec's cheek)
When I studied in Penn State I had to write an essay after I got told off by the RA for drunkenly playing the piano in the common room. That this is the same "punishment" given to 7 men who allegedly drugged & gang raped a Cornell student is utterly shameful

The US is the only country in the world that hasn't turned its capital city into the Death Star. Outrageous!! Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Former PM Rishi Sunak in the Sunday Times challenges the rise of ethno-nationalism in British politics, as an argument within the right about Britishness being about ancestry, DNA and ethnicity

That far-right goons were able to close down a community run library and language school in Glasgow was bad enough. And now this. Extraordinary that RNLI and their volunteers get so little support from authorities they need to close a life boat station.

I respected Watson a lot for his stance against Murdoch, News International and the phone hacking scandal (granted a long time ago but still).
I have no respect for this decision www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
As someone of mixed race heritage and the son of a migrant, this vile, bigoted barely-contained glee cuts deep.
While they bask in their cruelty we must demand better.
Just look at the glee on Nigel Farage’s face as he watches a Piddington resident cry about the overt racism she, her Caribbean heritage husband, and their two children have felt in the village during the referendum.
Time and again he’s showing us exactly who he is.
Regular reminder that JG Ballard’s final novel, “Kingdom Come” (2006), is about a far-right English town which creates their own militarised breakaway state in a shopping mall, where they worship the gods of St George and consumerism. Old JG wrote it as tongue-in-cheek satire. At the time.
In the movie version of this, after Piddington runs out of food water and money as a result of leaving the UK, the residents apply for asylum and end up housed in a military base, with HILARIOUS consequences.

In a world drowning in bad news, we must hold on to the good.
Today, our former @indexoncensorship.org colleague Andrei Aliaksandrau and his wife Irina Zlobina were released from a Belarusian prison after 2073 days.
While they never should have been imprisoned we celebrate their release
How states respond to journalism and critical scrutiny defines their principles and what they value. That the Israeli regime calls a documentary an act of treason and threatens to render the filmmakers stateless tells us quite a lot, and none of it good.
Israel’s Culture Minister Miki Zohar said he will work to revoke citizenship of filmmakers behind Gaza documentary “NAZA,” which won a Venice Film Festival prize. Zohar called the film, which alleges deliberate Israeli killings in Gaza, “vile” and “constitutes treason.”

Awkward on a number of fronts, especially for terminology in political response and media coverage, but proclaiming not to be a protest movement doesn't actually change police obligations
They are based on the rights of freedom of assembly and expression, rather than any definition of protest
“Jimmy Kimmel Live” has decided against broadcasting an interview on Thursday with James Talarico, the Democratic Senate candidate in Texas, and will instead post it on YouTube. Kimmel said that the show made the decision because the FCC had “threatened” ABC over “traditional editorial decisions.”
A reminder that a previous elite-led panic stirred up lynch mobs in the UK with one mistaking a paediatrician for a paedophile. We are in a dark place
www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/politic...
Also the response from the MP, @amandamartinmp.bsky.social is frankly shameful, appearing to suggest there are legitimate targets for this type of mob violence, which did not include the cricketers. Who would be the rightful targets of such lawlessness?
They're now just targeting random groups of dark-skinned people.
What's going to have to happen before the government starts taking this seriously?

Paramount is using a fake public interest group named "Neighbors For Strong Communities" to create bogus, AI-generated support for the company's $111 billion merger
Truly wild to have lived through moral panics about teenagers wearing hoodies and Muslim women wearing the head dress to now experience 'but is a large group of organised far right activists in balaclavas really that scary'
For a party led by a politician who whinged after having a milkshake poured over this head, the sycophant Jenrick should be careful when downplaying a political assault with "boo hoo"
So Reform UK have in the past few days
- been embroiled in YET ANOTHER funding scandal involving allegedly foreign funding
- had their supporters ASSAULT a protester as Farage smirks on approvingly
- promised a STATE OF EMERGENCY to bypass judges
And we can't call them a far-right party?!
Is this the two-tier policing we have heard so much about? If this was environmentalists they would have been arrested.
The clampdowns on all protest are illiberal & not human rights compliant but now we know they are ALSO partially deployed. The worst mixture
