"Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?
Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tail…
Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.
Mamdani: Yes. It’s also the golden snake."
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

I am no interior designer, but I have a bit of experience evaluating bathrooms for safety for elderly folks. Some notes for anyone navigating renovating a bathroom space used by older family members or residents.
2. Residents who suffer frequent falls (or are unsteady on stairs and sloped surfaces) would benefit from non-skid, non-slip surfaces. Wet marble is dangerous. This especially applies to residents on blood thinners, such as those with a history of strokes or TIAs.
3. Sudden, drastic changes caused by renovations can be disorienting to residents with dementia or similar conditions, even if they selected the changes. Adequate lighting at night may help them navigate better. Consider their safety during all renovations and redecorating.

1. If your bathroom is going to be used by geriatric residents, consider grab bars beside bars, showers and toilets. Toilets placed directly beside windows can present a hazard not only to elderly users, but to passersby.
During a military-style raid on a building in Chicago’s South Shore, one resident heard a knock on his door. It wasn’t the feds — it was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for help.
He let them hide in his unit for the next 3 days.

Sitting in a library in a small town reflecting that public libraries (and the unfettered access to knowledge they provide to the community) are one of the most valuable accomplishments of any society.
(It thus follows that anyone attempting to defund such institutions are hostis humani generis.)
W.E.B. Du Bois on Robert E. Lee:
“Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”
We simply had to intentionally destroy the world’s strongest economy while dismantling our scientific and educational infrastructure to ensure that a team with a trans girl would never finish second place in the Mountain West volleyball standings again
This facility handles traumatic line of duty death investigations for firefighters. Those reports are used to guide decision making on everything from equipment to tactics to standard operating procedures for firefighters across the country. They are sacred texts.
This will kill firefighters.

This is the intersection of influencer culture and politics. Politicians - even cabinet secretaries - believe that their job is to perform for social media. Getting attention is now their main skill, and why they are selected for their roles.
People experiencing pregnancy loss in states with abortion bans told us they wished they had known what to expect and how to advocate for themselves.
We created this guide for anyone who finds themselves in the same position.
To all those saying "shouldn't we root out government inefficiency? What's wrong with DOGE?" a quick background on Constitutional law and why the WAY it is being violated exposes the true motives of the criminals:
They said don’t make science political
But now scientists aren’t getting paid
They said don’t make science political
But now we’re backing up our data in fear of losing access to servers
They said don’t make science political
But now our colleagues fear coming to work…
My fellow Cishet white dudes: It's going to be very easy to put our heads in the sand the next two years and just look away for our own well being and sanity. But we can't just look away. Our trans friends need us. Our queer friends need us. The women in our lives need us. They can't win this alone.
i spent a month investigating how republicans could cut off access to trans healthcare for most americans, and how democrats can likely stop them — but it’s unclear if they will.

There are way too many people in the last 24 hours who have seen a white guy with a buzz cut and tattoos and assumed I'm a co-conspirator for their fucked up views.
Regardless of how this turns out, the mission remains the same. Look after your people. Look after your community, and especially its most vulnerable members. Fight to leave a better world for those that come after us.
In one tab, I study a series of sitreps and the necessarily complex coordination of volunteer, local, state and federal resources as a complicated disaster response takes place.
In the other, my elderly aunt observes from hundreds of miles away that she hasn't personally seen the response.
A four-year study showed that anti-transgender laws (which primarily target teens) increased by as much as 72% the suicide attempt rate among trans and nonbinary teens in those areas.

The goal of these laws was to eliminate people. The lawmakers know what they did.
