The thing about Ashita no Joe specifically is it's a very rare title that transcended manga or even art and fiction. Bigger than reality. And somehow saying that doesn't even prepare you for how good it is

sweats is still my favourite gamer term. can you believe this guy was trying to win the game we’re playing?

"This remake is inviting new players into this world" is so condescending. Ohh wittle new players oooh you simply cannot handle playing games from 20 years ago...you're too wittle and dumb with your wittle brain

Been watching Sadie play this Fire Emblem for like 80 hours and the Fire Emblem part looks really good but that’s buried behind SO MUCH that I just can’t imagine it being rewarding to sift through

I rotate this dub clip from Cyber City Oedo 808 in my head every couple years.

that's my TV anime for the year taken care of (last year's was Nadia. I can't watch more than one 20+ episode TV anime in a year or I start experiencing existential anxiety)

It's almost always better to have a truly miserable time with some art or media than just a boring time, because then you have a memory and talking with your friends about it can turn the miserable time into new good times. But given the option most people will hedge on boring bc it's safe...

time is healing these wounds when it comes to looking back on these games, retrospectively, but i do think it's the right move to avoid incorporating continues as a default functionality if you're shooting to make a new "arcade design" game for home release

It's a lesson on how much these systems can shape player perception, not just of an individual game but of entire genres and eras of gaming. In the case of beat 'em ups, the continue system literally flattened them to the point where most people can only distinguish the themes.

deeply depressing also to see replies to this post saying "well i just want to see pretty lights i dont like getting better at stuff." games as art indeed

Painful review of the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle on Steam that really highlights how destructive the continue system was to people's perception of arcade games. The beat 'em ups mentioned play wildly different from one another if you're actually trying to survive on 1 credit.
