Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Reacquired the Darius II difficulty A and Darius Gaiden clears today, will have to circle back for the real Darius II clear some day...

extrapolating, i think this is a matter of communication more broadly. if infinite credits is the default main mode, you have to be in-the-know to avoid credit feeding. if continues are presented as something non-default, it's communicated that the game is balanced to be learnable without them

headfallsoff@headfallsoff.com

i think credit feeding is a net good and not the problem. to me learning to clear a shmup is like learning to play a hard song on drums, and so the first thing i do is listen to the song the whole way through. play along a few times with it in my headphones just feeling it out, getting comfortable

you can also use words and use them very directly. you can say "this game is balanced to be learnable without continues" in text in the game, when the user adjusts a credits limit under a "cheats" section in the options menu! there's a lot of possibilities here, lol

don't construe this as me saying "arcade design games will start selling well with this one neat trick" tho

this is definitely still the best home version of the game right? split-screen, LAN play (with spectator machine support), bunch of fun bonuses.... main issue is figuring out the twin stick situation I guess

SEGA AGES 2500: VOL. 31 - CYBER TROOPERS VIRTUAL ON SEGA AM3 R&D/M2 2007 PLAYSTATION 2

time is healing these wounds when it comes to looking back on these games, retrospectively, but i do think it's the right move to avoid incorporating continues as a default functionality if you're shooting to make a new "arcade design" game for home release

It's a lesson on how much these systems can shape player perception, not just of an individual game but of entire genres and eras of gaming. In the case of beat 'em ups, the continue system literally flattened them to the point where most people can only distinguish the themes.

I had to go on Twitter to confirm this was real because Ship Awesome Games In A Weekend having a hand with six fingers was so on the nose I was about to pass out

This shit just writes itself at this point. Just the name "Epic AI MegaJam" is a joke that best describes what is going on with these companies.

Played through the demo of PC-98 horror game "Dead of the Brain" and would like to share why FAKKU's version is more than just a port but rather easily the most definitive version of the game as it provides a lot of cool technical features.

today's reacquired 1CCs were Miracle Adventure/Spinmaster and Special Criminal Investigation. I think these were both originally Calice Cup 2022 clears? I'm not a big fan of Spinmaster but SCI is still sick

Replying to @jdespland.bsky.social

To be clear: I am coming from a place of strong certitude that we CAN do something about all of this. That we can not only resist but fight back and win. I am interested in winning against the AI capitalists. I have no patience for doomerism, I have faith in our ability to win.

Get real! The nostalgic idea of indie games that you're trying to defend and protect was always fake! It was just commodity fetishism. It's 2026, we're putting aside our comfortable illusions and facing with sober senses our real conditions of life.

Indie games are a capitalist industry, not an art scene. They're made on Microsoft platforms targeted by BDS, on Unity which has contracts with IDF. At studios hiring employees under the owner instead of forming worker coops. By "solo" devs who exploit freelancers. On hardware sourced from slavery.

reacquired the Strania 1CC today. EX version, so Normal mode has the TLB (a change for the better imo) what a sick game! really gotta get Side Vower cleared eventually

i did it at the tail end of 2024 😎 anyway it's the absolute best video game of the entire 1980s and everyone that likes action games should give clearing it an honest shot

Mason@finalmasonry.bsky.social

2026 really was the year of Final Fight! So many of us cleared it for the first time this year

In other 'Taito only published it & it's actually a Seta game' news: I wonder if this guy will roll onto Arcade Archives anytime soon? Hamster have been liking their unconventional controller games of late🤔 Here's hoping (hopping) as it's a fun like memorizer

It's motorbike shooting action this week as Seta / Taito 1987 game Thundercade / 特殊部隊U.A.G comes to Arcade Archives It's being promoted as a Seta title so does this mean more Seta's on the way? #特殊部隊UAG #アーケードアーカイブス #アケアカ #セタ

In the same day Epic announced a complete overhaul of anticheat on Linux and a buggy launcher that they claim is vibe coded. aftermath.site/epic-anticheat...

conversations of the growth of old niche genres always seem to ignore the fact that the industry is rapidly crumbling under the everyone's feet anyway, weird

i do not see new shooting games being in a unique position here. it's incredibly luck-based to see financial success with any new game, and changing that seems to be a prerequisite for shmups to "grow"

The developer behind Teach My Little Sister How to Drive, a driving generative AI-powered instruction sim, has been spending $1000 a day to keep the demo running, and now, they've had to take out a bank loan to keep up. https://bit.ly/4rWqe8g

today's 1CC reacquisitions were Gradius and Darius, both real fun to revisit. Darius is kinda fucked with that Laser weapon being a downgrade though, lol

this article is really good with a lot of well researched interviews and perspectives and context as to what was going on in the studio. but sometimes. sometimes there's really only one sentence that speaks louder than all the others

I like seeing the argument "without AI these ports would not exist" and here's my actual response: I actually would rather not see them exist for an extremely simple reason: They're absolutely USELESS. And I would say that emulation has always allowed similar improvements the entire time.

today's 1CC revisit was Contra, jacked little game! also genuinely thought I got the Sengoku Ace clear but when trimming it realized I actually started that run from a practice saved state lol. Had to grab a clear post-stream and upload it

i don't imagine there are news outlets that would be interested since it only affects twitch streamers and we are lower than dirt, but the new AI "content warnings" that twitch has introduced for sponsored streams are crazy. it monitors what you're saying and pings you if you say a word like "beer"

today's 1CC reacquisitions, Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles II. Finally played the collection, it's pretty good!

Got the Crazy Taxi Awesome License :] ...for the second time, first time was 2010. I'm in my pre-stream 1CC re-acquisition arc

Whenever I write about old software, it still strikes me how absurd it is that it’s easier to run software from the 90s and 2000s on a modern computer than it is to run an iOS app from 15 years ago.
